For those of you worried about the exposure of the UK state to the activities & money of Palantir, here's a diagram from The Nerve that is going to do nothing to reassure you at all....

It sounds like there was another ICE shooting today but there's almost nothing known about what happened.

"The individual, who has not been identified, was shot in southern Pima County near milepost 15 of West Arivaca Road at around 7:30 a.m., according to a news release from the Santa Rita Fire District. The fire department said it transported the person in critical condition."

Trump’s ‘Board of Peace’ is a Grift on Global Scale

The absurdity of our times may best be summed up in the Trump regime’s brand new oxymoronic “Board of Peace.” ...

Unsurprisingly...Trump...appointed himself Chairman for Life. Permanent membership on the board requires an investment of 1 billion US dollars...

A “Board of Peace” created by a megalomaniac obsessed with imperial ambitions is the ultimate example of grift on a global scale.

Thanks to a software program called "Tangles," #police—sheriffs, Texas state cops, and even #ICE—can follow the location of your smartphone without a warrant.

Yet, we know little about how it has been used. Here's what our investigation revealed: texasobserver.org/texas-police…

As John Naughton warns (in parallel to many warnings here too), we are way too dependent on US technologies , although as he observes:

'Unwinding this dependency will be very difficult. But it has to be done'!

In this the Tangerine Tyrant's actions (alongside those of the TechBroligarchy) have been indicative of the trouble we could be in.

Up until now we have been too inattentive to the trap into which we have willingly walked.

It looks like Iran has successfully built a national 'walled garden' to control internet connectivity - both halting outsiders from communicating with those in Iran who are protesting, but also halting Iranians' ability to access the world wide web's myriad resources.

How well this 'wall' can be maintained remains to be seen but authoritarian regimes around the world will be watching, that's for sure.

Living in the U.S. is a little like being in a dissociative state. There's such a disconnect. Near me, new businesses and housing are going up like gangbusters, even though we know thousands have lost their jobs. Then I find out that my government has kidnapped the leader of another nation.

Everything feels brittle and shattered. And when everything breaks into jagged pieces, you're much more likely to cut yourself, even while cleaning it up.

The USA's continuing attrition against Venezuelan small boats in the Caribbean has now reached a death toll of over a hundred.

Noam Chomsky always used to point out: if you want to understand how power works in international relations, in a case like this reverse the protagonists & ask what would then be happening?

So, if Venezuelan armed forces had attacked a number of small US boats in the Caribbean, killing their crew, how would that now being playing out?

I think we know!

Drawing together two themes from recent discussions in my timeline, its worth re-emphasising that:

In-work & housing benefits are not (in the last instance) policies that help the poor rather they are a mechanism to funnel state fund into supporting profits for low-wage employers, and landlords (whose rents are higher than they would be without housing & other benefits being paid to the poor).

So when people talk about 'benefits cheats' you might want to point this out...

I'm a Google Workspace admin, and a team member sent me a screenshot showing that a message they wanted to send was being blocked because it violated an organizational policy-- which was news to me-- I hadn't put in place to block messages based on their content.

Turns out Google Workspace now warns by default when the message content mentions gender identity.

Trump’s anti-green agenda could lead to 1.3 million more temperature-related deaths.

Most of the people expected to suffer live in poor countries in Africa and South Asia that are least prepared to cope with the increasing heat from climate change.

Is Britain going backwards on racism?

Much of that depends whether you think it has moved forward in anything more than superficial terms in recent years.

And to be frank it doesn't much matter what I think, if, the victims of racism think things are getting worse, then whatever the claims of our political class, they are!

Certainly, the recent call for the deportation of settled migrants suggests a normalisation of racism that is highly worrying.

The AI industry wants us to believe AI superintelligence is the real threat from generative AI.

But that narrative was crafted to distract from the many ways genAI is being used to tear our societies apart, as we saw this week when a deepfake video rocked the Irish election. It must be reined in.

As many have already pointed out the outage at Amazon Web Services & its impact have shown the extent of dependence (for internet services) on a small number of companies.

As in other markets (national & global) oligopoly is the defining characteristic of this market;

while effective monopolies are rare, oligopolies are so common that one might want to call the current period the 'age of Oligopolistic Capitalism'.

That this has significant social costs is pretty clear!

Today's AWS debacle is the perfect example of the reason why in the last few years I started to be less enthusiastic about Signal, and more oriented to federated or even P2P solutions like XMPP and Jami. I wrote about it already:

gagliardoni.net/#im_battle_202…

Signal was down for few hours today, after an outage that affected AWS:

mastodon.world/@Mer__edith/115…

Let's ignore for a second the blind reliance on AWS or any other cloud provider. In a decentralized system, this would not have happened, or at least it would have not impacted so many users.

Yes, I am a cryptographer myself, I know that Signal's encryption is the best. But encryption is not everything. Availability issues, geopolitical troubles, risk of enshittification, limitations on users' freedom to use and control the software lead to a lack of trust, even in a supersecure solution. And I say that with honest admiration for the folks at Signal, who are doing a great job.

May they prove me wrong over and over again.

PSA: we're aware that Signal is down for some people. This appears to be related to a major AWS outage. Stand by.

RE: mastodon.social/@chatcontrol/1…

I love the ending quote (translated by me):

When Russia implements mass surveillance, we shake our heads and call Russia a dictator ruled country. When EU wants to do the same, it is "for the children" and it is expected that everyone nods their heads in approval.

This is so spot-on!

I'm happy they have received over 55.000 votes so far. 50.000 votes from citizens who can vote in Danish parliament elections are needed to get this proposal processed in the Danish parliament.

Now I just hope those 55.000+ votes so far are 100% valid votes. And I hope this proposal will double in the days to come.

Opposition to Chat Control within Denmark is growing. Fast. If you are a Danish citizen, please consider signing the Chat Control petition: borgerforslag.dk/se-og-stoet-f…

At 50 000 signatures, it is automatically submitted to the parliament and undergoes the standard legislative process, including potential debates, review, and vote.

This headline is ridiculous. The US is currently cracking down on the people who harvest US tomatoes and sending them to a swamp concentration camp with no representation and due process, and publicly hoping people get eaten by alligators.
