This PagerDuty layoff email is as bad as people say. Written in soulless buzzwords clearly aimed at the stock market analysts who are the only ones who think layoffs are a good idea, it introduces the fact that you are being laid off as a bullet point of four action items, then segues gracelessly into announcing promotions and *quoting MLK*. It's a masterpiece of awfulness. pagerduty.com/blog/improving-p…

So development is picking up again, with the impending release of #TheBadSpace and then back to #Fipamo so I can FINALLY work to get it out of beta.

All in all, I'm excited about the direction in both of those projects because one will be a big step forward for safety in the fedi, and the other is going to be a fresh idea on how we can leverage this space for a different kind of experience. Personally, I'm pumped about the thought of exploring new ways to engage, and it's going to be fun trying and seeing what works.

I've been fortunate to have a community of supporters that have contributed to keeping the development of these projects running. If you've been following me for a while, you know a goal of mine is to be able to do this full work time, spending my days building better tools and, LOL, fussing with everyone about the details. That would be a thin slice of fried gold for me.

For now, my primary funding source is Patreon, which has been keeping the lights on for my projects for a couple of years. It's the easiest way to pitch in a couple of bucks a month, enabling me to spend more time working, with the idea it will gain enough support to allow me to work full-time.

For folk that wants to give one-offs (which would really help at the moment because the tech industry is YIKES right now), I use PayPal and CashApp.

The recent influx of so many new people in the fedi has reinforced my goal of wanting to spend the majority of my time creating better stuff for this space. There is such an opportunity to create an entirely new communication paradigm.

Ha, I'm not sure how I will do it, but I will figure it out. Because here is where I want to be.

Just found out there is an accessible chat option for US residents experiencing a mental health crisis, but a work-around may be involved in order to use it annonomously if one is using a screen reader.
While you can call or text 988 from anywhere in the US, doing so will not allow you to remain anonymous. However, there is a chat option provided by Lifeline which allows users to chat anonymously. Before users can access the chat feature, they must fill out a short questionnaire. This questionnaire requires the user to solve a captcha. So it is essential that all end users are able to solve the captcha in order to receive help.
Simply arrowing to the 'I'm not a robot' checkbox and checking the box does not reveal the visual or audio challenge to a screen reader user. To solve this captcha, one must tab to it instead. You may need to tab past the submit button a few times in order to locate the captcha challenge dialogue.
I tested the audio captcha for this site using Windows, Firefox and Chrome. I hope this helps anyone who may be looking for help with anxiety, depression, or a mental health crisis.
From the Lifeline web site:
Lifeline Chat and Text is a service of the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline (formerly known as the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline), connecting individuals with crisis counselors for emotional support and other services via web chat or texting 988.
All chat and text centers in the Lifeline network are accredited by either the American Association of Suicidology or the International Council for Helplines. Lifeline Chat and Text is available 24/7 across the U.S. and certain territories.
The 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline is committed to providing individuals in emotional crisis with support, which can include connection to specialized services for different populations.

@lynnskyi I would say accessibility cookies, but I’m over trying to fight that fight.

@lynnskyi Fair point and one I hadn't thought of. I wonder what the recommended solution for deaf-blind users might be. Question captchas used to be a thing. Back when I hosted my own site, I used math captchas, but some bots got past those. So I had to implement tighter spam blocking measures. *makes a mental note to research captchas for deaf-blind users*

Do you want to implement a feature for librsvg in two lines of code?

Add support for CSS3 angles specified in turns, for example "1turn" == "360deg".

Instructions at gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/librsvg…

Thanks to Khadija Kamran, librsvg now supports the "turn" unit for CSS angles - gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/librsvg…

Unfortunately the company I work for chose to migrate EVERYTHING they possibly could to Microsoft services - including the previously self-hosted email servers.

I find it extremely irritating that link targets in emails I receive at work are all replaced by links to #Outlook.com, allowing MS to monitor any interaction and add its own trackers, so they can even see whether a link has been followed by people I forward a mail to 🤯

Even if Google's intentions are entirely honorable -- not something you can take for granted anymore, sorry to say -- the plan to block even sideloads of certain apps is a betrayal of longstanding promises. 9to5google.com/2023/01/23/andr…

A highly sophisticated bit of malware is being spread around via online social engineering. Be extremely careful about what you download from the internet.

More very experimental changes. Now games should install using the required version of wine if necessary. It works in all the tests I have done, but that doesn't mean there are no bugs.

Hey folks! There's a job open on my team at Fastly, working on the Compute@Edge Caching Engine! Personally I really enjoy working at Fastly, and this team is a super fun one if you're interested in HTTP, Rust, cacheing, and performance-critical systems programming in general.

It's a staff engineer role, but even if you don't feel like you qualify for that level, please do reach out to me.

DM or email me for more info; the careers page for the role is available here: fastly.com/about/jobs/apply/?g…

Sean Baxter not only wrote his own C++ compiler, but he authored this magnificent vision paper for the future of C++ that it moved me to reconsider my views on the safety of the language and its use future projects.

Seldom a man of my age and opinions can change his mind over something so fundamental.

Our support for Ukraine is unwavering.

Last week, we disbursed €3bn from our Macro-Financial Assistance package.

This financial support will help Ukrainians:

- maintain public services running

- restore critical infrastructure

- stabilise Ukraine’s economy

So far, we have helped with €10.2bn. More will come later this year.

Since the first day of the Russian aggression, we have stood at Ukraine's side. Our support is here to stay.

"The racial overtones of these categories are clear. White, educated, and middle class people who already have more access and sway over institutions, who have been trained with the logic and morals of the dominant system in colleges and schools; are always more expected to be peaceful protesters. Meanwhile, black and brown youth who riot and fight back against the police also are likewise expected to simply be rioters and looters. In doing so, their actions are stripped of all reasons for acting and they are reduced to beings with animalistic urges; devoid of purpose other than being out of control.

We see this time and time again. When riots break out, elites always make the distinction that those that are physically fighting are not protesters and therefore are not legitimate. This is also how the black bloc is largely presented by the powers that be, as a body of people both in treason against the “peaceful protester” and also against whiteness itself. Instead of swallowing the State’s logic, let’s recognize this language for what it is: the State recognizing its enemies. It’s up to us to draw lines: who do we support? The State or those that resist it?"

This is amazing. NASA commissioned a microgravity compatible espresso machine for the International Space Station (to make ISSpresso, obviously), and to stop the astronaut having to drink espresso from a closed container with a straw, a bunch of NASA volunteers designed the Space Cup, so the crema bubbles could be seen and the coffee smelled even in microgravity. And I've just been sent one in the post. That's Samantha Cristoforetti drinking from it in the ISS cupola. #ISS #Space #Coffee
