This, against at least certain tendencies of the post-work and UBI focused left, by Alex Gourevitch from last summer, is very good. Hadn't gotten around to it until now, but wish I had. Aligns with Aaron Benanev's short book on automation. catalyst-journal.com/2022/09/p…

Many thanks for that! Very lucid article, sharp in getting to the heart of the issues, and with some memorable turns of phrase that make it both a pleasure to read and easier to remember and discuss.

Reminds me of much older debates around the question of labour discipline in really-existing socialism. For example, Lukács wrote on The Role of Morality in Communist Production:

There are two possible remedies. Either the individuals who constitute the proletariat realize that they can help themselves only by voluntarily setting about the strengthening of labour discipline and thereby raising productivity; or, where they as individuals are incapable of doing so, they create institutions which are in a position to carry out this necessary function. In the latter case they create for themselves a legal order by means of which the proletariat compels its individual members, the proletarians, to act in accordance with their class interests. The proletariat then exercises dictatorship even against itself. Where the interests of the class are not correctly perceived and voluntarily adhered to, such measures are necessary if the proletariat is to survive. They also, however – and we must not disguise the problem from ourselves – involve great dangers for the future. If, on the one hand, the proletariat creates its own labour discipline; if the labour system of the proletarian state is built on a moral basis; then the external compulsion of the law will automatically cease with the abolition of the class structure of society. In other words, the state will wither away. This liquidation of the class structure will of itself create the beginning of true human history – as Marx prophesied and hoped. If, on the other hand, the proletariat adopts a different course, it will be obliged to create for itself a legal order which cannot be abolished automatically through historical progress. In that case a tendency could evolve which would endanger both the physiognomy and the achievability of the ultimate objective. For if the proletariat is compelled to create a legal order in this way, that legal order must itself be overthrown – and who can tell what convulsions and sufferings will be caused by the transition from the realm of necessity to the realm of freedom via such a circuitous path?

Hey folks, time for the monthly open Q&A. "I'm Perplexed, What's Next"
This meet-up will happen Saturday 24th June, 8PM UK, 3PM Eastern.
This is the session where you can ask Scott and JennyK questions about #REAPER, #OSARA, or pretty much anything around #accessible recording. Newcomers with questions always get top priority, so drop in and tell us about what's tripping you up. We'll spend a couple of hours helping as many as we can.

As long as there is coffee in the JennyK lair and hopefully a shay holding down the fort on YouTube it will be another great Q&A. :D
Read all the details, find tips and tricks to tweak TeamTalk so it behaves, and more at reaperteacher.com
See ya Saturday.

On Sept 12, 1952, Dr Ewan Forbes-Semphill, known as "Benji" to his family, officially changed his legal gender following the simple process of requesting a warrant for birth re-registration from the Sheriff of Aberdeen and registering himself as male. He then announced this in the Aberdeen Press and Journal. His patients were almost universally supportive, having known this was coming for some time. Ewan was equally candid with the press, saying it was "a ghastly mistake. I was carelessly registered as a girl in the first place... the doctors in those days were mistaken." A month later he married Isabella Mitchell.

Everything was fine until 1965, when his eldest brother died. With no sons, the noble title of Baron, along with a sizeable estate, would pass to the first male heir. Ewan's cousin John disputed the inheritance on the grounds that Ewan's re-registration was invalid. A long legal battle ensued, eventually resulting in a ruling by the Home Secretary in favor of Ewan.

A bit last minute, but I have applied for the GNOME Foundation Board 2023 election to work on

We were very happy when we heart that the XMPP-based cheogram.com/ experimentally adopted webxdc.org -- so that the same web apps run on Cheogram and Delta Chat. We started communicating with Cheogram's main dev through matterbridge in a group chat about upcoming webxdc improvements ... #interoperability ftw :)

Sam Altman, OpenAI’s CEO, has made headlines by calling for regulating AI due to the high risk to humanity.

In private, he got the EU to remove OpenAI’s technology from the high risk category of their upcoming regulations.

Perfectly played. 🧑‍🍳😙🤌

“And yet falsely claiming to be a human through online interaction could/should be seen as a manifestation of false and misleading advertising under the Competition Act. Chatbots should be clearly labelled, too. They should not be able to masquerade as humans.

Synthetic media is super similar. If we are to consider consuming stuff conjured by artificial intelligence, we should be able to know what made it.” A+ piece from Vass Bendar: regs2riches.com/p/what-tech-po… #AI #techpolicy #GCdigital

On March 23, 2016, my partner and I were staying at a hotel in Stroudsberg, PA with an enclosed in-suite pool, which was only about three feet deep.
Around 2:30 AM, I couldn't sleep, so I put on a set of microphones and hung out there for a little while.
Recorded (very carefully) with an Olympus LS-14 and a pair of Sound Professionals MS-BMC3 microphones on sunglasses.
Sorry for the transcoding badness. Mastodon does that.

We actually have one of those (not exact same model but similar), and it's amazing. It has a bunch of different coffee "recipies" selectable through the worst touch screen ever animated in 4fps, and then you can give it wifi access to connect to a coffeeWorld account and download like... one additional coffee recipe.

The coffee is pretty good though.

Let's go back to Disneyland for today's #AudioMo and take a ride on Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. Two things about this recording. Thing 1: it's so cool to hear the sounds the coaster makes as it's going up and down its various drops. Thing 2: The poor guy at the beginning of this recording had no idea what he was getting himself into. lol.

#AudioMo for today the 19th of #June. recorded the #sound of our drier. this is a long #recording so feel free to fast forward if you want. listen to the machine as it revs up to its full power. I don't know but when I listen to this, it reminds me on the sound of my #first #Flight. it sounds like an #Airplane taking off but then losing its power. for the record, on my first flight, the plane did not lose its power. haha! enjoy!
