I donated to @thunderbird today. I've been using #Thunderbird for over two decades and it has always been free and open source. Support an e-mail client that doesn't pollute your brain with ads and doesn't sell your data by adding to the community funding:

BUT!!! No "share to Mastodon" after the donation?? Really??

Okay, new @thunderbird version asked me to donate and for the first time I did.
I am using thunderbird since... ever, at least 20? years and donating the price of a good retail software is the least i can do.
Also sharing the special link from the new version, because it looks so much nicer than the normal donation page ^^"
THank you everyone involved :BlobhajHeart:

Free Software – like #LibreOffice – isn't about zero-cost (as nice as that is). The focus is on freedom to use your computer as you wish, and take back control of your data. We were recently at Software Freedom Day in Delhi, for instance: blog.documentfoundation.org/bl… #foss #opensource

LibreOffice reshared this.

in reply to LibreOffice

The focus on Freedom and taking control of your data is also imperative to #LabPlot, an open source Data Analysis and Visualization software.

It supports multiple file formats and the ODS import support will be added in the next release :-)

Cash-strapped Malaysian budget carrier MyAirline abruptly suspends operations, stranding passengers

> Malaysian budget carrier MyAirline abruptly suspended operations Thursday, citing financial pressures less than 11 months after it took to the skies. The unexpected announcement on social media caught many by surprise and left angry passengers stranded at the airport.

Follow-up on the HTTP/2 Rapid Reset Exploit: NGINX also describes the mechanism they have in place to prevent this.

Google and Cloudflare should have written "the typical web server is not affected, but the typical Cloud implementation is."

Blaming the exploit on the protocol standard is lame.

When you implement 100% of an RFC you are not done with your work.

#izrael

Oort seems like a pretty fun Rust programming game. The idea is that you get to program ships to engage in space combat. Similar to other games such as Space Traders.

The idea is pretty cool, but it uses a web editor to input the code and it is not accessible, so I can't use it. Pity.

Spent a little while writing the async Rust mutex of my dreams:

* lock acquisition is async
* cancel-safe, prevents cancellations in the middle of critical sections by using a closure
* lock poisoning (!!!)

OMG the latest #Thunderbird update (115).

But finally stumbled across a Reddit post that helped me fix the most objectionable (to me) change:

reddit.com/r/Thunderbird/comme…

After the updated, the message list seemed cramped, line height way too small.

This is because the default "density" changed from, I guess, medium to compact?

That setting lives under the "hamburger menu" (three horizontal lines in the upper right)

Changed it back to medium density, breathed a sigh of relief.

I support Bradley Kuhn. Welcome to the LGBTQ+ FOSS community!

No one should be forced to come out due to fear of being outted, especially in court. Please read Bradley's post and the linked court documents about Eben Moglen's behavior.

I'm proud to call Bradley Kuhn a friend and am celebrating him joining the growing community of out-and-proud FOSS leaders.

But it is a tragedy when someone is forced out.

I've watched as Eben Moglen and SFLC have abused the legal system and attacked SFC, wasting the scarce resources of one of FOSS's most important charitable nonprofits, and am devastated to learn about the personal abuse Bradley has endured.

FOSS friends: please take the time to read this. ebb.org/bkuhn/blog/2023/10/11/…

We have revamped the #mobile #UserExperience on our website. It is now possible to open all challenges on smaller devices.

Ever wondered what it would be like to code on your phone? Use the time on the bus or train to complete some levels on your way to work.

Realizing I haven't posted this one here:

So a lot of Firefox preferences aren't synced to new computers, right? To fix this, you can config-as-code all of them with a `user.js` file. This means easy restores/setup on new computers, the ability to sync changes across computers after editing in one place, and having a `diff`able snapshot of all your preferences. No more disabling Pocket manually.

There are plenty of projects which offer starter configs. Arkenfox is maybe the most popular; I've found Betterfox to have defaults that fit closer to my needs.

I have a project which is really just a Makefile and some overrides, that pulls from the upstream Betterfox repo. It lints for organizational issues with some terrible, terrible CLI invocations, lets you `make install` the generated `user.js` (with automatic backups!), and provides for machine-specific preferences. Check it out! codeberg.org/oneirophage/firef…

I knew ionized water was a scam but "we run it through some old soviet military titanium we bought from some dude and oops hydrazine and liver failure" was a unexpectedly wrenching escalation.
