Got an enormous amount done this morning.
1. Cancelled my 1Password account. I was only evaluating it and I prefer Bitwarden myself.
2. Had a long conversation with someone on my Apple Watch. It worked a treat. She could hear me fine and I could also hear her voice and JAWS over the watch clearly enough.
3. For practice, created some markdown documents on my BrailleSense and asked ChatGPT to convert them to Word. Lovely accessible Word documents containing tables and headings. It cannot handle footnotes properly though.
the python-docx library doesn't directly support adding proper footnotes as in Microsoft Word. So what it did was simulated the appearance of a footnote by inserting a superscript reference number in the text and adding the footnote at the end of the document. That is not the same thing at all.
4. Tried to create a JAWS notification rule so as to remove the "star star" characters from ChatGPT and CoPilot. That hasn't worked out quite right. I think that may be a JAWS issue rather than me.
5. Talked to some people on X.
6. Processed plenty of Email.

I have zero confidence left in Mozilla's leadership. In fact, here's a bold prediction: the Thunderbird team (operating under the wholly owned subsidiary known as MZLA) will be more profitable within 5 years than Mozilla Corporation. Yes, that same dying product Mozilla abandoned in 2012. The one the COMMUNITY kept alive and the one that is now thriving.

Eventually Mozilla will approach MZLA begging them to come back...

(Note that I'm saying this as someone no longer employed there.)

One of the weirdest disconnects happened a few months ago when I received a Mozilla Foundation newsletter about the evils of big corporations building unethical AI. It was a donation appeal so they could gear up to "fight" against companies like OpenAI.

This doesn't seem strange until you consider that Mozilla is currently paying a ChatGPT Enterprise license for all ~1000 of its employees. And encouraging them to use it for productivity, brainstorming, & code.

Yea, it didn't sit well. At all.

@asael I RP-ed it because I've personally had way too many friends impacted by this new wave, some of whom ended up with long COVID. My sister caught it for a 3rd time and thankfully nothing longterm for her, and she's not even disabled. I'm glad my Sweden trip turned out lucky for me but I'd be afraid for a large conference where there's zero COVID statements made even if masks are optional, but that's just me entirely there and we're all different in opinions :)

@asael @Tamasg Why do we have airbags when we have brakes? Why do we have fire extinguishers when fire fighters exist? Because not one precaution is perfect for everybody. Layers are cool. Vaccinations would help if the infection rates were low, but they are not. So maybe try to do more is not such a bad suggestion?

In Mona, has anyone been finding that, with long posts in their timelines, VoiceOver focus jumps? I usually scroll bottom to top, so I just swipe to the left through all the posts, and when there's a long post, Mona seems to skip a bunch of posts when I do this.

I wish you could set certain websites to always open in reader mode on a per domain basis.

Get in Babkans and other fedizens, we're doing Tuesday.

This morning the landscapers are out and making noise, so I suspect I won't be getting much work done for now. Good thing I can rearrange. We have the windows open and don't want to close all of them.

Other than that, John and I have read five of the "In Death" books so far. We like the series but are taking a break for now.

So far favorite characters are Mavis, Peabody, Rork, and Crack. John says Eve Dallas is OK but sometimes gets on his nerves. Sometimes she gets on my nerves too. I haven't decided if I like Crack yet.

Re last: I think it's one of the worst decisions Mozilla could made. Can't they afford a smallish Mastodon instance? Sorry, I don't believe. then it's a political decision: let's go back to the ex-bird site (pun intended), with all its hate speech and the jerk in the head; let's deprive many people that really care about the open-source community of a convenient way of communication. We've not blocked Taiwan - we do not block any country, if so it's the other way around like Russia blocking us. So it could be that your Telco is blocking us. Could you try a different connection?

I have a question about the new Braille screen input. If I’m in a text field, and I want to use the new gesture to activate it, double tapping with a finger at each end of my phone at the same time, how do I get that not to activate dictation instead? I tried to use that method and kept getting dictation turned on accidentally. I always evoke Braille screen input when I’m in a text field that is already editing.

Do the gesture slower. Also try using your 2 index fingers when already holding the phone in screen away mode.

I spent today wrestling with a test environment whose idle timeout couldn't have been more than 2 minutes. This made it quite a challenge to start a Webex personal meeting, start recording, set up screen sharing, and do my introductory voiceover for the screen reader testing video before getting logged out. And I could re-log-in without clearing cache and cookies. #fml

They replaced the feature with a broken version of the same feature. Nice.

I really wish folks were more careful about the videos they post of their kids. Infrequent clips of activities like singing in a choir or playing a sport are one thing, but increasingly I see videos of small people (kids are in fact people) having meltdowns, or crying (even from happy overwhelm), or otherwise being vulnerable. Consider that if you took videos of your friends while they were crying, then posted them, you'd be an unsafe person for them to hang out with.

Be your kid's safe person.
