(Thread) In the olden days, a FOSS (Free/Open Source Software) project typically had:

- A source code repository
- A web page with the documentation, FAQ and links to downloads
- At least one mailing list called announce, typically also one for users and one for contributors, all with public archives
- (maybe) An IRC channel to chat with other users and maybe also the developers

Maybe it’s time to try that simple approach again? Everything open, everything accessible? 1/7

the abandonment of mailing list is what bums me the most. Several big project replaced it with "discourse" whose usability is dubious. I ended up losing contact when they closed the mailing lists.

But then mailing list got killed by GMail, 20 years of killing email and counting

it will be a hard problem. The oligopoly of email (Google / Microsoft) will make it hard to setup email servers like it is already hard to run a mail server independently. Disguised as spam fighting they centralized email.

And with the techbros that decided to use GMail for corporate...

EU member states can now collect and share information on so-called “potential terrorists”.

But who is classified as a "potential terrorist?

A "shared understanding" was reached this year without democratic scrutiny. This left broad criteria for deciding who is a "potential terrorist or violent extremist threat".

The definition includes individuals categorised as:
• refugees and asylum seekers
• climate and environmental activists

hey people. It's something I've thought about for a long time before deciding to share it.
Whenever I listen to music, I find myself needing something very specific. For those familiar with musical terms, the track—whether with or without vocals—needs to be in either the Dorian or Mixolydian mode, or even a mix of both. I don’t enjoy other musical modes at all; they don’t resonate with me whatsoever.
While Celtic tracks often have this type of music in common, it’s not exclusive to Celtic music. Dorian and Mixolydian modes are used worldwide, so it’s not only Celtic music that I love. For example, 'Scarborough Fair' is a great Dorian example, while 'Norwegian Wood' by The Beatles gives off a Mixolydian feel, though it's not Celtic.
I sometimes wonder if something is weird about me because of this. I feel like people might think I’m strange for only enjoying this type of music, but that’s just how I am. I'm not sure if this is something typical or if it’s a bit unusual, but I feel an incredibly strong attraction to these two modes, while others seem unsuitable, almost as if they weren't made for me. If anyone else faces a similar experience, I’d love to hear about it.
It’s also closely tied to a form of synesthesia I experience, where only these specific tracks make me imagine something truly good, as if I’m on a peaceful, heavenly adventure.

Edit: they are thankfully still alive. They’re injured from the strike.

Both of my parents were in the Red Cross during the 75-90 civil war and have both said it wasn’t as bad, that they could still cross Israeli lines to help ppl at the time. Israel now just targets first responders as a matter of policy. This is a rogue, criminal regime.

Wifi extender was not cutting it in the shed/home office, so now got a powerline adapter breaking out to a secondary AP.
Reliability is much improved, so I can shift much of the etherneted stuff down here now and the NAS and other wired sundries can live in a cupboard

A really annoying thing that absolutely needs to stop:

- "More info in the discord!" / "Changelog in the Discord!"

STOP THAT.

Discord is a closed, proprietary platform. Post your stuff on the actual open web where more people will see it.

There is a chance that if my focus remains, I can get a networked version of the worms game out before the end of next week :).

The remaining things are:

  • Netcode
  • Weapons menu
  • Tightening up of the logic around rounds and turns.
  • Win screen.

Netcode sounds like a lot, but I think I'm going to be able to use off the shelf stuff for the actual server side. Already designed a proto I think will work.

If it does happen, I'll drop a link in here for folks to try :)

in reply to Halfy!

I'd be up for playing a round if you get there! 🙂

in reply to Juan CBS

Eso si queda bien, porque también hay algún "profesional" que... en fin. Pero sí, en lo que uno no sabe mejor no meterse.

Question, once I have a CSV file, where do I place it inside my Mastodon client?

I do find myself trying to unfollow a person I don't want to see but they only appeared because of a hashtag they used sometimes.

Call centres need to stop playing me MINUTES of automated messages telling me to visit their website. If I'm calling you, it's because your website cannot help. That is the only situation in which I would ever ring ANYONE other than my Mum.

We do this not because it's easy, but because it's less hassle than getting into a whole discussion about it.

Uh, Android, I don't think I can use PayPal to send emails. I just don't think that's a thing I can do. Also, blind users of mastodon who happen to use galaxy watches, have any of you encountered issues trying to get eloquence working? I've installed it, but I can't run it and if I select it in TTS options, I get a grand total of no speech whatsoever.
in reply to Haily Merry

If you click on an email and open it in paypal, it will open the send money page to that email.

I maintain my steadfast belief that “clean code” is like the “clean eating” of software development — an eating disorder based on feel good behaviors that are largely irrelevant and that leads to health issues.

Whenever you hear “clean”, save yourself and run!

While living in western Europe, we all might have forgotten what borders were :

In the last week, I had 5 passport checks - in the middle of the night -, 3 still in coming.

I'm running around with 5 currencies : 🇪🇺 Euro, 🇺🇦 Hryvnia, 🇲🇩 Leu, 🇷🇺 Rubel and 🇷🇴 Ron, likely tomorrow even still with 🇭🇺 Forints.

Please keep yourself reminded what a privilege open borders, unified currency and the lack of customs checks are.

Defend #Schengen. Share European standards. Open borders. Do not build a fortress.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but after gaining access to OpenAI's new O1 model, I've started using it to analyze my own professional writing and it's doing a pretty fantastic job. It's giving me inline suggestions which are accurate and helpful, noting the need for clarity when necessary, pointing out capitalization errors, and understanding niche accessibility concepts without my having to feed it any context. It's also very self-aware; it pointed out a discrepancy between what I wrote and its 2021 knowledge cutoff, but encouraged me to verify rather than assuming its own knowledge was correct. It's insanely expensive compared to GPT-4O, but I can still have long back-and-forth exchanges and typically stay under the $1 mark. It's technically also available as part of the ChatGPT subscription, so maybe I should be using that rather than the API, but so far the cost has been minimal and I don't think I need to.

what's interesting to me is that on the Chat GPT site, it tells you what is actually thinking about specific to what you're asking. For example, when doing the "count of Rs in strawberry" it might say things like "verifying letters" and "counting total letters in the word," almost like you get to see more of how the thinking process came to be when your answer was crafted, which is very useful to scan (although I should note that it flashes by very quickly.)

I've given up on stupidity.
My family drove to vote for Brexit down a Welsh road paid-for by the EU, and they still thought their 98% white british population was being overrun by forreigners. You just can't fix stupid.
If they'd had a reasonable case, even if I disagreed with it, i could've gotten behind them. But they didn't, and doing things just because you're told bothers me more than most things.

Brexit.
Many of my Brothers and Sister and their partners voted Brexit because of immigrants, given one of my Sisters who voted because of immigrants has a Greek daughter in Law and 3 half Greek Grandchildren and a half Polish Grand child all living in the UK than and now, all I can say is you can't fix racists.

It broke my heart and we are still not talking.

I have a .me, because I didn't like the sound of com and I'm not a company. having my own name as a .me made perfect sense to me, but at least once a month, usually if I'm giving it out verbally, someone will add .com or .UK or something to the end of it.
