Opinion: Biden's foreign policy missteps weakened the West and undermined Harris' path to the presidency.

History will likely judge U.S. President Joe Biden poorly. He set himself a singular mission: to save democracy. But the risk is that his own ego may have jeopardized that very cause — not only in the U.S. but across the West, writes Timothy Ash, Associate Fellow at Chatham House.

Georgian PM hopes for 'restart' of ties with US after Trump's reelection. "I am confident that President Trump’s leadership will promote peace globally and in our region as well as ensure restart in U.S.-Georgia relations," Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze said on X.

Europe must take responsibility for its security, Polish FM says after Trump's win. "The winds of history are blowing ever more strongly. Poland's leadership will rise to the occasion," Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski said, urging European countries to boost defense spending.

Updated: Russian officials cautiously cheer on Trump's victory. Russian war in 'stalemate,' needs to be brought to end, Republican senator says. "That doesn't mean we celebrate what Vladimir Putin did or are excited about it, but I think there has to be some common sense here. Far out in the uncharted backwaters of the unfashionable end of the Western spiral arm of the galaxy lies a small unregarded yellow sun. Orbiting this, at a distance of roughly ninety million miles is an utterly insignificant little blue-green planet, whose ape descended life forms are so amazingly primitive that they still think digital watches are a pretty neat idea.

This planet has, or had, a problem, which was this. Most of the people living on it were unhappy for pretty much of the time. Many solutions were suggested for this problem, but most of these were largely concerned with the movements of small, green pieces of paper, which is odd, because on the whole, it wasn't the small, green pieces of paper which were unhappy.

And so the problem remained, and lots of the people were mean, and most of them were miserable, even the ones with digital watches. Many were increasingly of the opinion that they'd all made a big mistake coming down from the trees in the first place, and some said that even the trees had been a bad move, and that no-one should ever have left the oceans.

Perhaps I'm insane for thinking this, but Bookshare ought to find a new name. I dunno. Bookshare just sounds like a piracy thing, somehow. Share the books!!!
in reply to Andy

I've had this thought, especially when telling sighted folks about it and that I can get books from there, often they think I'm talking opnely about a pirate site, that's happened.
in reply to Tamas G

@Tamasg I guess at one point, the name was more fitting, especially when the service was essentially ran by volunteers: books were scanned and then corrected for OCR errors. So books were literally shared. But that's largely not the way it works anymore.

PSA: if your CI pulls the (third-party) dependencies from the main git branch, you are doing it wrong. This will fucking break.

"But I don't want to have to update"

in reply to Hubert Figuière

I have news for you. Doing that will force you to update the code when you want it the least. Because it will break when you are trying to push urgent things. Because the third-party dependency is NOT on your schedule.

Ah yeah Firefox still crashing when using the "list all tabs" menu. It seems to be unable to deal with two screens.
in reply to Hubert Figuière

Click on the list all tabs menu. It is short because it think it's the other (smaller) screen

Scroll down. It extend to the proper size.

Hover an item.

It update itself scrolling elsewhere randomly.

Change size again.

If all of that happens when you were about to select the tab you wanted then it might/will crash.

Welp. I hoped I could get a full night's sleep and find out it was a bad dream, but it's November 7th and it's real. I'm still just utterly baffled at how stupidly this country chose its leaders.

Well, our first snow storm here in Albuquerque, we're under a winter storm warning until Friday at 11 AM, and the roads are slick. Great times, welcome to like, 3 weeks of autumn and boom cold winter.
in reply to Tamas G

Ha ha! Enjoy! I am going to stay all warm here. Hey, Americans have the habit of closing down everything when the snow is barely up to my knees, and I am 154CM tall, so I wish you lots of fun. I don't know what really the state of snow is over there or how they close up, but here the snow must be up to your waste if you want to have any hopes of no work or school. :D I live in the south here, so no snow, we can swap if you want, or, actually, nope, I changed my mind. Snow is snow though, and cold is cold wherever you are, so take care of yourself, and dress up well.
in reply to Мира🇧🇬🇭🇺

@tardis oh thanks! Yeah, it's about 4-5 inches of snow (8-10 CM) but in the South they are well, more whimpy about it than in say Ohio or Northern parts of the country. 6-12 inches of snow (24-30 CM) was not uncommon in Ohio and even then in the lake effect zones schools will try their best to stay open. Kinda nuts! Sadly no snow-days in the cloud, still have 3 meetings to attend to for work and participate in, maybe this is the only "downside" to remote work xD
in reply to Tamas G

Haha, yeah, that is the downside to it. I still have one more website to break. I am delighted! I love breaking things. I can fix physical things, but computers, nope. I can make a website if I catch up on my HTML and learn the Aria stuff properly, but I am no tech. I am no fun, but I'll fix the cupboard before it falls on your head. I am unfortunately, good at that. Good luck with meetings! I don't like meetings, it takes all my mental effort and capacity to form proper sentences when speaking. If I could just write...
in reply to Tamas G

Also, when I was in Washington like, 8-9years ago, that's how far the snow reached before they closed up the school. and made us do boring business projects. that, required a lot of effort to be interested in. I was just a school nerd. Business is boring to me. Not interested. I also don't ever want to go back to the states besides visiting, which won't happen because, well, pricing haha. We're poor over here, and live like we have everything in the world and all's good. I guess the fact that water, food and housing exist is a good thing.
in reply to Tamas G

Meanwhile, in the general tristate area, it's almost 80 degrees Fahrenheit today.

Is this correct? I always thought Access technology was a UK thing. Later I was told Access Tech was the old fashioned term…

“Access technology and assistive technology are closely related, yet they serve slightly different purposes and audiences. Access Technology is a subset of tools and devices specifically aimed at making mainstream technology usable by people with disabilities. For example, screen readers, like NVDA or JAWS, open up digital content to blind and visually impaired users by converting text to speech or braille. Similarly, captioning on videos makes audio content accessible to people who are deaf or hard of hearing.
Access technology is about creating a pathway to existing environments—digital or physical—so people with disabilities can engage equally with content and experiences designed for a general audience.
Assistive Technology on the other hand, encompasses a broader range of devices and software designed to assist individuals with disabilities in performing functions that might otherwise be difficult or impossible. This can include mobility aids, like wheelchairs or walkers, augmentative communication devices, or adaptive tools for daily living. For example, a braille note-taker supports daily productivity and communication for someone who is blind, while a prosthetic limb aids physical mobility for someone with an amputation. Assistive technology covers tools that provide support specific to the user’s needs, beyond accessibility in mainstream contexts.

Imagine a visually impaired student navigating an online course. Access technology, like a screen reader, bridges the gap by converting on-screen text to speech, allowing her to participate in the course as fully as anyone else. But to take notes or organize her studies, she may rely on a braille note-taker—an assistive technology uniquely tailored to her needs beyond just accessing information. For many, these tools are more than technology; they’re lifelines to independence, connection, and self-expression—bridging gaps and lifting limitations in ways that honour each person’s unique journey.

In simple terms:

• Access Technology helps people with disabilities use mainstream technology.
• Assistive Technology provides personalized support and tools for individuals to live more independently, across both general and unique contexts.

Their paths intersect because many access technologies—like screen readers, magnification tools, or voice recognition—are also considered assistive technology due to their role in supporting independence and empowerment. However, assistive technology is a broader term, often including unique tools tailored for very specific personal needs beyond mainstream accessibility.

As we look to the future, the lines between these two types of technology may continue to blur, with innovations that address complex needs across all contexts. Imagine AI-powered apps that identify objects, read text, or recognize faces in real-time—tools that simultaneously provide access and enhance day-to-day living.

While access technology aims to bridge the mainstream gap, assistive technology offers tailored support that supports each individual's independence.“

there was this fedi post from a while ago about how community isn't a party that you show up to, expecting to be served. it's more like a potluck, you're supposed to bring something to the table too. I think about that a lot. it's just really good to remember. everyone wants community but it's so easy to forget to participate in building it. I wish I realized that earlier. now I'm just hoping that I learn how to interact with people better and feel more assertive about my agency over the spaces I occupy.

With #matrix and oidc I was thinking about offering an official FluffyChat server. It would have some benefits, right? I could have more control over the UX and would be kore independent. On the other hand it would require a lot of work and eval a public legal identity with either an expensive impressum service or publishing my physical address. Also a lot of legal paperwork.

So I came up with a new idea. A new login UX flow where the user picks the homeserver from a trustworthy list

Apple’s interference with Jon Stewart’s show, telling him he couldn’t talk about either AI or China, was the main reason I decided to retire in case anyone was wondering. I couldn’t continue to work at a place that does that sort of thing. And now Tim Cook is showing the world he supports white supremacist Donald Trump.

I wish I was surprised by all the media orgs bowing and scraping to the next president. But this is how they operate. By Jan. 20, they will have completely memory-holed the fact that he is an outright fascist.

Remember: This is a business decision.

“But Democracy Is Not Over” Are you really absolute sure about that? I think it very probably is.

Trump has been screeching since 2015 about wanting to imprison and kill his political opponents, and how he needs people around him who would will do it when ordered because that’s why he couldn’t from 2016-2020. And guess who he’s surrounded by now?

Are you REALLY FUCKING SURE that democracy wasn’t just murdered by all the stupid fucking idiots who didn’t vote for Harris yesterday?
