A severe #accessibility issue I've seen very few people talking about is the widespread adoption (in my country at least) of touch-only card payment terminals with no physical number buttons.
Not only do these devices offer no tactile affordances, but the on-screen numbers move around to limit the chances of a customer's PIN number being captured by bad actors. In turn, this makes it impossible to create any kind of physical overlay (which itself would be a hacky solution at best).
When faced with such a terminal, blind people have only a few ways to proceed:
* Switch to cash (if they have it); * refuse to pay via inaccessible means; * ask the seller to split the transaction into several to facilitate multiple contactless payments (assuming contactless is available); * switch to something like Apple Pay (again assuming availability); or * hand over their PIN to a complete stranger.
Not one of these solutions is without problems.
If you're #blind, have you encountered this situation, and if so how did you deal with it? It's not uncommon for me to run into it several times per day.
why do you think this is not being talked about or made the subject of action by blindness organisations? Is it the case that it disproportionately affects people in countries where alternative payment technology (like paying via a smart watch) is slower to roll out and economically out of reach for residents?
@miki @bermudianbrit @FreakyFwoof I live in a country with zero accessible ATMs as it is, so I hadn't thought about that. Fortunately we have cardless withdrawals, meaning I can WhatsApp someone a single use code for a specific amount and all they can do is withdraw that amount.

@FreakyFwoof Nah I've seen those in the UK as well. Definitely becoming a thing in coffee shops. Might also be in other kinds. I either don't go in or don't pay in those, I suppose.
@FreakyFwoof I have only seen it once, in Japan a couple of years ago. It is a usability disaster even for people who have no motor, cognitive or vision disabilities.
The solution I've been using and recommending is apple Pay/Google pay, but it's not ideal like you said especially for people not used to smartphones. In Europe the issue was raised IE by the european blind union, and the european accessibility act now requires these terminals to be accessible. Manufacturers are slowly implementing this, just yesterrday I heard that the Android-based terminals from Global Payments using the Nucleus software have an accessibility mode that seems to work OK, but for example the Polish branch of GP has their own separate software so things are still patchy. Some manufacturers are also providing physical keypads for their terminals.
@pitermach I wonder if the accessibility solution will be something like "a physical keypad comes in the box with the terminal, but we purchased the terminal 10 years ago and moved three times, we have no idea where that thing went. I've only worked here for 3 months, so has everybody else, I had no idea that we ever got one."

@jmdaweb Yo sí que lo he visto y no está nada mal. Los de comercios que tienen la pasarela de Caixabank son accesibles. Va bien incluso para el pago con Apple Pay ya que antes de que puedas acercar el dispositivo te dice la cantidad a pagar. Lo que no he probado es a marcar el pin de la tarjeta. Si tienes algún comerciante de confianza que te permita probarlo y que tenga ese terminal de Caixabank dile que toque dos veces el icono de una persona con bastón que hay en la parte inferior de la pantalla.

No se le pueden poner cascos. 3. lo han medio resuelto haciendo un pitido en cada posición de número y uno tiene que armarse en su cabeza donde está. Así que es parcialmente accesibleí
@gramirez34 @jmdaweb Es la menos mala de las soluciones posibles pensando que la han aplicado sin cambiar nada a más de 300.000 datáfonos. El problema a mi entender es otro más grave: Falta educación al usuario ciego y comunicación al comerciante para informarle de que existe esa posibilidad.

@inovegil @jmdaweb Teóricamente, la activación la debe hacer el comerciante una vez introducido el importe a cobrar. Funciona así. El comerciante prepara el cobro antes de que el cliente introduzca la tarjeta y una vez pone el dispositivo en espera de recibir la tarjeta es cuando ha de activar la accesibilidad y ofrecer el datáfono al cliente.
@tiflonet @jmdaweb ya, pero la EN301549 requiere que las características de accesibilidad se puedan activar mediante mecanismos compatibles con la necesidad que satisfacen, en este caso acceso sin visión. Aunque quizá debiera, ni en la versión actual ni en el borrador de la 4.1.0 hay ninguna excepción. Si el producto tiene documentada la característica de lector de pantalla, un ciego debería poder activarlo de manera autónoma.

Google Pay finally went PINless a few years ago, so this is no longer such a problem, but afaik e.g. the Blindshell still doesn't support it, and probably never will.

Nope. Learning to use the LLM effectively took me about two weeks, but after that, I figured out the cadence, what it could do well, how to keep it on track.
First thing I learned - do not make small talk with the LLM - it's distracting. Work to small objectives. Write little prototypes and flesh them out with testing.

Also. Yes, I understand the emoji is not ideal for screen readers. They read out the description of the emoji, so what I did isn't ideal accessibility. However this post is to make a point (which ooo i got under some skin didn't I?), and my own screen reader (TalkBack) read it ok. I kept it minimal and didn't use them in the entire post. Which I was irritated enough to want to do.
Why aren't emoji good for screen readers? I use them constantly and as far as I know all screen readers process them correctly nowadays. At least JAWS, NVDA on windows (not sure about Narrator though), VoiceOver on iOS and TalkBack on Android.
@menelion excessive emoji and emoji between words are not completely accessible because a screen reader reads out the description of the emoji, and it gets confusing. People with cognitive disorders who use a screen reader would have a more difficult time.
I use emoji but I stick to less than 3, and try and place them somewhere that is easier to understand.

I work at a shop at an airport. The new seating opposite the shop has chargers in them but the seating isn't plugged in. It keeps me entertained seeing person after person plug their chargers in to one socket, then another, and I stand there quietly watching them laughing inside.

Anyway, @whitequark drew an interesting contrast between Calibre adding AI conversations and KeePassXC allowing slopcode in the repo.
KeePassXC accepting slopcode calls their expertise into question, raises the question as to whether the code in KeePassXC will be up to the par required for security-sensitive software. But you could imagine a world that is very much so not ours in which AI works, can be trained ethically, and does not boil the ocean; a world in which KeePassXC's use of AI code isn't questionable at all.
By contrast, Calibre adding "AI conversations" with books fundamentally alters the relationship that users, presumably readers!, have with the works in their libraries.
Of course, as an author, you can't ever stop someone from doing whatever they want with copies of your book. The impulse to do so is toxic af and leads to shit like DRM. That doesn't obligate you to *help* anyone do any specific thing with your books, though.
Here, Calibre, in one release, went from a tool readers can use to, well, read, to a tool that fundamentally views books as textureless content, no more than the information contained within them. Anything about presentation, form, perspective, voice, is irrelevant to that view. Books are no longer art, they're ingots of tin to be melted down.
Some people will always do that with books. It's why Cliff Notes was profitable back in the day, and it's why in some crowds, AI is popular now.

Possibility, I might need two separate computers. The other issue is I have no experience in necessary setup awareness. Perhaps Pop! for games and creativity, another for other purposes. So I'm very unaware and unprepared to migrate to more PC safety needs.
Test out various distros in your browser. Not an exhaustive list, but covers a decent number of the mainstream distros. Might help some folks make that final step away from Windoze/Mac.
When moving an email to a folder, the list of folders (and their subfolders) now appears in REVERSE alphabetical order, Z-A, with the usual "default" folders in reverse order at the bottom.
The user is presented with the folder list in one orientation for navigation, but the reverse orientation when moving an email. WTF?
Perhaps I've not seen an option to apply (or change) some setting for this? 🤷♂️

It's not as universal as debit cards in store and "fast transfers" online, but it's pretty widely available.
I'm very much a fan, it's the only way to do secure payments on insecure / untrusted devices, e.g. when you want a sighted person to pick something that "looks good", and it's just easier if they make the purchase.

in reply to James Scholes • • •Yes, this was one of the major reasons why I recommended blind ppl to always choose iPhone over Android if given the possibility.
Google Pay finally went PINless a few years ago, so this is no longer such a problem, but afaik e.g. the Blindshell still doesn't support it, and probably never will.
