hmm. I wonder if releasing on GitHub might be easier for folks, rather than Eurpod. I am considering doing this and keeping one file there. This might break my old posts, but GitHub releases are more trackable, the repo is frozen at that tag, ETC. There's just clear benefits to release them always as a pair (editor + Add-on) whenever I make a change. From here on out, I think that's going to happen.

@x0 yeah, I think you can still link to the stub for the release zip from the assets link and not the redirected one, I've seen people do this. So hopefully it shouldn't be a big trouble. For sure an advantage on the centralization part, now that I don't post more than 1 release a day usually. Maybe 2 at most, but not 5 or 6 like I used to either. LOL thank goodness. Frequency should decrease over time as updates become more language-specific things only.

@FreakyFwoof Downloading from github, for releases anyway, is much simpler anyway. If you go up from the bottom there's a releases heading, or you can just append /releases to the repo URL. THen you get a tag and expand the assets button. To actually put code there you need git, and GitHub desktop is a lost cause accessibility wise. Git isn't quite as intimidating as FFmpeg, perhaps curl is closer, but it has some obscure commands with bizarre, arcane options for very specific cases, which you'd run into if you tried to read the manpage.
@x0 @FreakyFwoof for me I think being forced to use it at work (as an enterprise server) just put me in the deep end. Rebasing repos, merging, origin and remote, all the lingo. Ugh. But maybe it was good in the end for my own personal life too, haha.

Many somewhat computer-literate users can stumble their way through "Download installer for Windows", but anything more advanced than that is a struggle.
This is also why the NV Access website is just all kinds of stressful and horrible for international users, especially with the donation amounts prominently displayed on their download page. "Skip donation this time" should have never been an acceptable name for a button that actually means "download."
@FreakyFwoof Worth remembering that Git and GitHub aren't one homogeneous thing. I find Git useful as a developer, and just happen to currenntly and primarily using it with GitHub.
In the future if I move away from GitHub (not impossible), I will still probably use Git. If I move away from Git, I will still use version control for code.
So, maybe that's a place to start, if you're interested. @Tamasg @x0

@FreakyFwoof Git is a tool for managing changes to your code. Rolling back updates, branching off in different directions, tracking history, etc.
GitHub is just one hosting platform and social network built up around Git. @Tamasg @x0
@jscholes @FreakyFwoof @x0 I'd be curious how many of you have tried or switched to Microsoft's GH? They really tried to sell it, but as much as I like the nested commands I got so used to git syntax that I just use it mostly still. That and this is a great point about at least letting you move outside of GitHub with Git to other version control systems if you don't like your repo hosted by the big MS. Also GH I believe is definitely GitHub only which limits it and why I never switched. Maybe a bit of both problems for me.
Are you talking about GitHub's gh CLI tool?
I use it extremely often and like it a lot. But it's not a Git replacement. It's just a command line GitHub API client app for GitHub-specific features (with a few Git helpers for convenience). @FreakyFwoof @x0

@jscholes oooh yeah, maybe I should use it more often now that it supports things like actions. I never even realized this. It could help me avoid navigating a lot of the site and just do things via CLI, hmm. Might make it easier to approve PRs, although these days I like the rich diff view if I can see it on web, else I just do CLI diffing. But still. It's interesting that it's complementary to Git, not a replacement for it. @FreakyFwoof @x0

There’s a proverb in the book that goes something like “Everything that happens once can never happen again. But everything that happens twice will surely happen a third time.”
Of course, logically this makes no sense—everything that happened twice is a thing that also happened once.
But I take it to mean “Once something goes wrong twice, it’s time to pay attention.” Once could be a fluke. Twice means there’s something going on. The second time it happens is where the phase change from noise to signal begins.

Not because they do not want to pay the copyright holders, they actually did. But that did not give them access to any copy of the movie, they are on their own.
The previous time, the distributor would only send them a French-dubbed version, which was a no-no for them.
They are not even obscure unknown movies, but classics. 🤦♀️

Native Instruments did a 14-minute video on the accessibility features of their MK3 keyboards, barely enough time to even cover what the thing does, let alone the keyboard functions, not to mention it wasn't done by a blind user, the target audience.

The d͡z version showed sharper energy around high frequencies (3–8kHz). To fix this, I redistributed the energy by adjusting various parameters, including pa6 and pa5. Next update. Words like " words" and "sounds" have less sharpness already but it didn't lose its sound.

Alright, work meetings. No SpeechPlayer updates for a bit. Someone's asking for Russian, really can't promise that'd be ready by next driver with how complex it is of a language. If I add Russian I'd also be tempted with Ukranian, Belarusian, and Serbian. so it would come in with similar languages, just as we have all the Germanic ones, and then each would get their own tuning treatments. But large work. The initial scaffolding I can make, native speakers I can't just birth out of my stomach.

I don't know. My partner (Jess) asked if I'm building this for other people or myself. I feel like I'm building it for other people but I really should be happy with it for myself at least. My only goal was to get this thing working in modern NVDA. Then US English lead us to other languages, people asked if they can have theirs, and then it turned into this big sad project. But maybe I shouldn't feel so sad over it. For myself, it sounds nearly there. Yes some words are off, and some things still stick out a bit sharp, like the word words, ironically. But I can understand and use it, probably 80% of the time I am instead of Eloquence. In that way, mission accomplished, and we have a big robust frontend to tune, so I probably should feel less sad about it.
The key is to realize this can't be only your project. Think of it like you're founding an organization that needs to persist over the years. You're already doing that work, by documenting everything really well, and giving lots of people other features they can use. As well as creating tools. But your goal should be getting it into a state you, personally, like, and then in moving towards having other people in charge of different things. So all you do is final tests and sign off on releases.
@fastfinge I just made a massive tools update, formant_trajectory.py and the frame inspector use lang_pack.py and a simple_yaml.py to parse it in a less strict way. So now it's really solid on tooling. People can do tests against them, and build languages easier. I think you're right, hopefully it can get to a point where I'm sitting back and accepting PRs from people tuning phonemes, and carefully weighing bigger changes to anything with the community, liaison for improving it. But this is so so far away from that, although interest is definitely picking up and the more I can simplify tools and add them in many ways I'm hoping the flexibility will make it shine for it. Whether you use the phoneme editor, the frame inspector / trajectory tool, now you really have a way to dig into the rules.

What I've been playing with, and why you haven't heard much from me, is trying to create some good way to extract formants from existing sounds, in an accessible way. Thus far, though, nothing has worked, or been as accessible as I want it to be. It involves matlab and other terrible things. But what I really really want is something where I can put in a second of sound and get an estimate of all the formants and transitions, and then use the tools you created to compare them. But I haven't gotten close enough to have anything to share.
But what has been helpful is using your tool to show me just how wrong everything I have tried for formant estimation actually is. So it's been useful in that I can generate audio with known values, give it to my formant estimation attempt, and know that my estimated data is incorrect.
So one thing to think about: If people change settings in the NVDA addon, then you release an update, it looks like there settings aren't always updated. And it's really, really easy to break subtle things. If I were you I might consider adding a reset to defaults button in the addon. Because otherwise you're going to get feedback from people who toggled a checkbox like co-articulation without thinking about any of the associated settings and now wonder why everything sounds bad.
@fastfinge I think we can. If we shipped a .defaults folder with the untouched language files, then the person just hits "reset to defaults" in the NV Speech Player panel, and boom. We just copy over the files from .defaults and they have unchanged settings. But sadly it can't live in the voice panel, because you cannot put buttons there. So it has to live in the NV Speech Player settings area near the top.
This blogpost makes an astoundingly good case about LLMs I hadn't considered before. The collapse of public forums (like Stack Overflow) for programming answers coincides directly with the rise of programmers asking for answers from chatbots *directly*. This goes much, much wider than programming and LLMs.
In general, the open source world looks with disdain at all kinds of automated feedback collection mechanisms, which the Silicon Valley Venture Capital tech ecosystem has wholeheartedly embraced. OSS is still stuck in the 1990s mindset of "if there's a problem, somebody will report this to us", and That... just isn't true.
What we're stuck with is OSS solutions with inferrior user experiences which nobody wants to use, instead of a compromise where OSS software collects more data than some people would have liked, but that software actually has some users and makes a difference in the world.
To be fair, there are some good arguments against this (it's much easier to protect user privacy if the only contributors to your code are employees with background checks), but that doesn't make this less of a problem.
Yeah, not a bad idea to release the add-on and editor together on GitHub. Link updated. If people want they can use the packs folder from the add-on included to tweak phonemes now too, so that really solves that problem. Appreciate that suggestion. Technically it's still not bundling libespeak or linking directly to it so I'm able to do that fairly.

Remember, the driver file is like 70 KB because it has so much code for settings, compatibility with older NVDA back to 2023.2, voice keys, all of it adds lines. I think we're good on frontend passes for now, too many settings and people can now build proper languages with this set of them.

I didn't put in the new phonemes into the editor yet. Going to give it a bit of time to be in the driver first, then yeah if people aren't overly upset, we'll move them into Master. For now it's a bit experimental. Maybe this afternoon. I'll move them into the master branch now, so people can see and mess with them, compare the diffs if they want, and then we'll roll it into the editor version later.

Mostly language tuning. Words like "square", "fair", "bear" get proper US and UK pronunciations. Protein, Fourteen get a slight tweak, though not perfect. Some of this is just on Espeak being used for IPA and phonemizing. We also fixed it so that the "google / able" rule doesn't bleed into words like real. Overall, no phoneme changes from last night. People were not super overly mad at them getting a slight softening. At 16000, it sounds really good to me, and less sharp. At 22050, that's your own damn problem. Formant synthesizers lose their bandwidths at higher sample rates because they simply cannot fill it all in and compress their voice in an equally filling way across all frequencies. It's a thing with all of them. Eloquence at 22K? I'm realizing, not the greatest. So if you're using it at that and think, "oh now it's too soft", at least it also doesn't sound like it does at 44100 when it's at 22050, so you should really be thankful instead. Just saying. Besides, we only really changed like 17 phonemes to get this effect, it's not like all of them got a rewrite.

• YAML now gets ordered correctly as the NVDA driver writes it, so the phoneme editor will create a structurally sound form that's consistent.
Still using ESpeak as a non-linked, separate phonemizer, or you can specify your own if it runs through STDIN / CLI, as always. Enjoy!

yeah, I don't believe AI is good enough for this, so doing this will risk making the program a horrible experience for the last humans actually doing things the right way. The ones we should care about the most. I've resisted this AI take for curl reports for this reason.
I think it‘s a quite terrible idea to let AI triage slop AI reports. It truly reminds me of AI summaries for long AI-generated e-mails. Seems a bit like an LLM powered circlejerk.

I had to save the HTML code in plain text instead of rich text and add the HTML extension.
Question for anyone on here using Google Gemini.
I want to extract some text from some war diaries and preferably save it as an HTML file.
I realise Gemini probably will not create an HTML file for download but it did offer to create me HTML code.
I put it into a text editor, saved it as an HTML file but there must be something I'm missing because when I opened the new document in a browser, it just showed me a whole bunch of HTML code instead of my nicely formatted text.
Is there something I'm doing wrong? I'm on the mac.
@Scott I worked out what the problem was.
If I say it as plain text and change the extension to HTML, it gets the formatting absolutely right.
I heard that Gemini wasn't very good at generating files to download but I might have another try.

Surprised it can't rustle you up a file for download if you ask it to do that. It's hard to say what's wrong without seeing the file you've got.

Довольно часто в массовых обсуждениях пропаганды перехода на Линукс я замечаю знакомые паттерны, что встречал ещё в велодвижении. Есть там одна схожая тема - езда на велосипеде на работу и просто по делам, что я и сам практикую и даже продвигал :)
Так вот многие персонажи прямо до боли знакомы.
Адепты секты дистрибутивов и окружений: "ездить по городу нужно только на шоссере/циклокроссе/туринге/горном велосипеде/складнике". Если у тебя что-то плохо получается, то выкинь свой Gnome и купи найнер, на нём на трамвайных рельсах ты бы не упал. Что? Какой найнер, что за сраный жир, только шоссер позволит чувствовать себя уверенным на дороге.
Любители гик-гламура: эти вешают фоточки лакированных и сверкающих городских велосипедов с деревянными деталями и кожей, на которых они ездят в твидовых костюмах, либо восстановленных лимитированных советских велосипедов на оригинальных деталях, либо ультраминималистичных фиксов и говорят, что вот он - путь, идентичность и вообще суть велокультуры. Осторожно спрашивающих каково попасть в таком виде в дождь и точно ли велосипед с деревянным лакированным ящиком удобен для езды среди автомобилей и таскания в переход обычно сразу банят за дискредитацию армии идей. Когда в Москве проходили велопарады, влияние этих кадров было особенно заметно, в том числе среди организаторов. Я потом регулярно встречал людей, пытающихся их заветам следовать, помню, со мной пару недель ездила девочка в платье и на городском велосипеде с ящичком. Больше я её не видел ни в каком виде, что и не удивительно. На трёхполосных дорогах-то.
Скилл-ишшью гигачады: "если у тебя что-то не получается, ты просто слабак, иди качайся, а так у нормальных людей всё норм". Как сделать вот это? RTFM, сука! Просто разгонись на вливании до 40 км/ч, перестройся в третью полосу и дальше топи через развязку за автобусом, держать тридцатку десять минут может любой, даже мой сын, дед и собака. А там ещё раз разгонишься и перестроишься, тебя пропустят. Наверное. Страшно? Ну и иди отсюда! Какие ещё объезды. Ты ещё скажи, что прыгать на велосипеде не умеешь. Просто тренируйся каждый день и всё получится (ну или иди нахуй).
Технопуристы: "systemd/wayland/GUI амортизаторы/гидравлика/широкая резина/переключатели никому не нужны, а что они везде есть - это корпорации вас разводят". И всё бы ничего, если бы они подкрепляли этим свой личный выбор, но мажут этими широкими мазками прямо по лицу чаще почему-то новичков. У тебя велосипед с вилкой, чего ты хочешь-то? Научиться ездить можно только на жигулях-классике фиксе. Некоторые поддаются влиянию. Кто-то таки действительно начинает ездить на фиксе, а про тихо разочаровавшихся больше никто и не узнает. Отдельная разновидность - минималисты-экономисты, выбравшие своим (и поэтому всеобщим) идеалом Thinkpad 2012 года выпуска велик пятнадцатилетней давности, перешедший в состояние "всё ненужное отвалилось само, а он всё равно едет".
Непробиваемые оптимисты: "у самурая нет цели, есть лишь путь, дождь не мочит, падать не больно, а поломки повод развлечь себя вечером и поиграть в конструктор". В принципе, я и сам к таким отношусь, но есть нюанс - к этому состоянию можно только прийти самому. Навязать его нельзя, можно лишь создать ложные ожидания. Дождь мочит. И да, это не так важно, но в ряде случаев сухим на работу ты не доедешь. И да, есть разные пути - можно летом поехать в одних шортах и тогда до нитки промокших предметов будет три и их легко сменить, можно завернуться во всякие мембраны и намокнуть не так сильно, можно относиться к дождю как к челленджу или наоборот веселью, но он есть. Не надо говорить, что это фигня и существует лишь в голове.
Ну и с другой стороны всё тоже типично. Самый узнаваемый типаж: укладыватели слона в холодильник: "это всё хорошо, но я посмотрю как вы повезёте на велосипеде газовую плиту или поедете на работу из загородного дома 50 километров по автомагистрали или заедете за день к тридцати клиентам по всей Москве и области". Да, инструмент должен соответствовать цели. Если встаёт задача поместить слона в холодильник, не надо это делать. Вызовите авторефрижератор. Никто с этим и не спорит. Ну, кроме всех перечисленных персонажей, конечно :)

Прямо мои мысли выражаете. При этом говоришь им: я, мать вашу, слепой. СЛЕПОЙ, понимаете? Совсем вообще ничего не вижу и не видел никогда. Мне ваш велосипед недоступен от слова совсем, как и Линукс, потому что вслепую на велике не поездишь, а доступность (accessibility) в Линукс такая, что это исключительно игрушечка для гиков на выходные, типа для тех же, кто Генту или ядро пересобирают по приколу. А они тебе то самое: ты слабак, люди пользуются, ты просто раб корпораций, фошизд, ноцизд и вообще тебя нужно везде забанить. Ну да, знаю я нескольких человек, которые на Линуксах сидят, а потом выясняется, что у них либо виндовая машина есть, либо в тот же Телеграм они с телефончика ходят и голосовым вводом пользуются… короче, тоже накипело. А одной мадам тут на полном серьёзе сказали: ну вот паралимпийцы же ездят на велике, а ты чего, хуже, что ли? Давай тренируйся.
В последнее время периодически задумываюсь над тем, чтобы возобновить изучение немецкого.

Я начал изучать его в школе с репетитором, поучил какое-то время, затем приостановился, готовился к ЕГЭ по английскому. После окончания школы продолжил, потом опять забросил, потом продолжил, понял, что не знаю, зачем он мне нужен и бросил.
У меня была подруга из Германии, с которой мы были очень близки и познакомились на почве языковой практики, какое-то время делали это.
Сейчас вновь возникает мысль "Не продолжить ли?" На испанском я говорю на уровне B1, на польском также, с чешским у меня ничего не получилось, мне интересна жизнь незрячих в Германии и это отличная мотивация для продолжения, также как я в своё время начал изучать польский и в итоге говорю на нём сейчас. Подписался здесь на знакомого чувака из Германии с сервера Hearthstone Access, он бустит что-то часто на немецком и мотивация еще сильнее, чтобы понять, что он пишет.

Однозначно продолжать. что правда, у многих людей немецкий плохо запоминается. Не знаю, с чем связано, но даже у меня (я от скромности не умру, считаю себя способным к языкам) именно с немецким возникают жуткие проблемы с удержанием лексики в памяти. Такого нет с другими германскими, ни с английским, ни со шведским, ни даже с нидерландским, который я учил-то самую-самую малость. Это надо учитывать. А так — однозначно вперёд!
