Unwahrscheinlich, aber wie heisst es nicht so schoen "Vor Gericht und auf hoher See..." 😎 Alle Infos 👉 youtu.be/UtrtflsF3eI

Update: kann man das schon einen Justizskandal nennen, wenn Twitter so einen Deal mit dem Bundesjustizministerium machen kann? Siehe Screenshots:

This is an old project, but by some miracle it's still working and I woke up this morning wanting to celebrate the things I love more.

This Inkplate e-ink screen shows Conway's Game of Life, seeded from tarpits I have on the Internet. The tarpits are programs on my computer that superficially look like insecure Telnet and Remote Desktop services, but actually exist to respond super slowly and make bots scanning the Internet 'get stuck'.

When a bot connects to the tarpit, the data it sends gets squished into a 5x5 grid and 'stamped' onto a Game of Life board. Data from a bot at the IP address 1.1.x.x will get stamped on the top left corner, data from a bot at 254.254.x.x will get stamped on the bottom right corner.

Conway's Game of Life, a set of simple rules that govern whether cells should turn on or off, updates the display once per second. The result is that bot attacks end up appearing as distinct 'creatures', that get bigger and more angry looking over time (as their centre is updated with new data). After the attack finishes, the 'creature' eventually burns itself out.

Despite that description, it's a really chill piece of art that doesn't draw too much attention but I can happily watch for a long time.

Credit for the idea goes to @_mattata, I had been wanting to make a real-life version of XKCD #350 for years before seeing his Botnet Fishbowl project.

Gotta love this Wealth shown to scale website mkorostoff.github.io/1-pixel-w…

It's pretty amazing storytelling. Also excellent web design. Plus my finger is tired from scrolling, I'll never reach the end!

Obezita ohrožuje 18,5 % Čechů, z toho téměř 20 % mužů a 18 % žen, mírnou nadváhou trpí 47 % mužů a 33 % žen. Průměrná hodnota BMI (indexu tělesné hmotnosti) obyvatel České republiky dosáhla 25,2, což je těsně nad horní hranicí normální zdravé váhy.
Mne osobně obezita ohrožuje. :(
Jak jste na tom vy?

Are those of you here in the #Fediverse aware of the amazing resource that is mynoise.net?

No?
Let me introduce you.

It has a medieval village #background #noise environment with toggles you can use to increase or decrease the blacksmith shop and market and horse clops (among many others).

Oh, you want a coffee shop? Sure thing.
Rain? Thunderstorm? Gotcha.
Generic white noise?
RPG thrills? Of course.
Tame that #tinnitus? Yes!

Check it out!

I like the early #accessibility tips from fedi.tips/mastodon-and-fediver… especially the bits at the end where admins can add CSS to help support their authors to create better content.

I wonder if there are more tools to help authors create more accessible content. #ATAG 2.0 is really powerful, yet old school social media hasn't adopted it.

I always find videos about #accessibility super interesting. Here are two videos from ProRail showing how one can use Dutch railway stations when blind or visually impaired:

Accessibility is really important and needs to be given more attention.

Hey folks,

I'm currently looking for new permanent and remote-only opportunities in Europe.

I'm really willing to get my hands dirty with some Rust. My day job is mostly about TypeScript and NodeJS but I have plenty of projects on my GitHub account you can check github.com/yamafaktory .

Boost really appreciated ❤️ !

An article on how to write an effective #AltText #ImageDescription for #accessibility...

MAIN POINTS:

• describe the image only, not the photographer credits or keywords
• write a description appropriate to the context (ex., a post about photography vs. a celebrity)
• make it as concise as possible, except if you are transcribing text in an image
• no need to start with "An image of..." as the screen reader says that by default
• end with a period to provide a pause

Very very new project, I38, which aims to do for i3 and sway what strychnine does for ratpoison.

This is extremely new code, prone to bugs, and not everything is implemented yet. If you want to test, please back up your current configuration first.

Very cool, you can change modes and add bindings inside those modes, so we have a ratpoison mode which will allow launching things in a familiar way for strychnine users.

cozy in a mac rom scarf. specifically this is a slice of the ROM from a Macintosh IIsi. here's how it was made. i used @th 's script github.com/osresearch/prom/blo… and the mac roms on archive dot org archive.org/details/mac_rom_ar…

if you have ImageMagick already installed:

$ perl hex2png.pl -y 1280 -w 32 mac_rom_archive_-_as_of_8-19-2011/36B7FB6C\ -\ Mac\ IIsi.ROM \ | convert - maciisi.png

Then a slice four columns wide was taken of the resulting image and knit into a scarf. The scarf is 1280 pixels/knit stitches long and therefore wraps natively in the columns of the scarf. if you want to make your own, you'll need a hacked consumer knitting machine or an industrial knitting machine or someone with a setup to machine knit it for you.

cargo-nextest 0.9.44 is out! A call for testing:

This version of my next-gen #RustLang #TestRunner supports pausing and resuming test runs on Unix (#NextestCtrlZ).

To make this work reliably, #nextest needs to use a "double-spawn" approach. This is currently off by default but can be turned on with an env var, `NEXTEST_EXPERIMENTAL_DOUBLE_SPAWN=1`.

Call for testing: If you're on Unix, please help test this! Update to 0.9.44, then set this environment variable. Thanks!

The file system is your friend.
Mobile #UX has been alinenating users from the file system (so that Big Tech, not the user is in control) and has been dumbing down users to the point that they don't understand the concept of the hierarchical file system anymore.
Software (even open source software) increasingly tries to hide the file system from users. Or neglect it. #Gnome and Co. don't even show application icons on the ELF executables.
It needs to change.

@garrett @matzipan @talex5 @federicomena sorry i meant the development of, not the use of. Xdg is one of those things that begs further discussion, like "why are photos are graphics art the same thing?", " templates¹ but not projects?", no email, not cals. Why is .local a dumping ground. Most standards get evolved when they're that close to users and desktop designers. Let's say, the expected mutation rate is not observed.
in reply to Abandoned

@doctormo @garrett XDG specs need maintenance; they've been in "work well enough, a lot of work to change apps if the specs change" mode for a long time now.

Photos / templates / etc. are 2000s things, I think, partly from trying to be familiar with Windows/MacOS and Nautilus trying to be clever with templates (they are great for forms for expense reports!).

I like that both flatpaks and containerized services are converging on object capabilities even if done with ugly historical APIs.

in reply to Federico Mena Quintero

@doctormo @garrett For example, .local and .config and friends were a way to avoid the proliferation of app-specific dotfiles or dot-dirs, and now flatpak really formalizes what goes in them. It's only of interest to sysadmins and really responsible app authors.

We wanted apps to control the data they create on behalf of users, without polluting already-messy home directories even more. So, stuff things in dot-dirs. Once you have containers, they become really useful.

in reply to Garrett LeSage

@garrett @matzipan @doctormo @talex5 @federicomena Being relatively new to Mastodon, I wonder whether it is good etiquette to tag everyone in replies ("@garrett @matzipan @doctormo @talex5 @federicomena") like my Mastodon instance does by default. In any case, I have my own thoughts about XDG too, tl;dr: it needs a complete overhaul. github.com/helloSystem/hello/w…
