It's unreal how many soft or felt pianos I have heard, looked at, tried to imitate with other libraries. Nothing, and I really mean nothing, comes close to Ólafur Arnald's felted grand from his Composer's Toolkit. It's a very specific instrument for a very specific genre, absolutely minimalistic and fragile. One day, I'll purchase it. But for now, enjoy a well-made demo track: youtube.com/watch?v=sLIEXsHjfU… #music

I work on this compiler, Cranelift, which is the first production compiler to use "e-graphs" and equality saturation in its optimization pass, as proposed by academics in rosstate.org/publications/eqsa… in 2009. Once we have an e-graph, which is full of alternative ways we could implement the same program, we have to select one way that we think is somehow the "best" way. I've been trying to prove that this selection step is NP-complete, meaning that it's as hard to find the best answer to this problem as it is to find the best answers to many other problems that nobody has been able to find efficient solutions for in fifty years of trying. And I think I now have a correct NP-hardness reduction from "vertex cover", so I'm both pleased at figuring that out, and disappointed that we're unlikely to find an efficient and perfect solution.

Ten pobyt v jeskyni mi příliš připomíná vězení a to není můj ideál. Ne směrem do uzavřených prostor... (i když zrovna pobyt v kosmické lodi by tu jeskyni připomínal hodně...)

Nevadila by mi ani ta tma a uzavřený prostor.

Is there a term for Gell-Mann Amnesia Effect, but for programmers talking about programming (or people talking about their own field) and not journalists talking about fields they don't understand?

I've never personally found the GMAE interesting because I never expected the median journalist to be able to accurately write about some random complex field they have no expertise in but I repeatedly make the mistake described by the GMAE when it comes to, e.g., meeting new programmers.

I just watched a Slovak #movie Nightsiren (Světlonoc) from 2022 on #Netflix and I liked it a lot.
It shows that toxic behavior is often imprinted to children by parents and enhansed by stupid folk traditions.

If you care at all about the details of how GPUs do precision, conversions, rasterisation, or any of the gory fine details, then download this now.

microsoft.github.io/DirectX-Sp…

This is the DX11.3 spec, and it's basically the last full one-stop-shop functional spec Microsoft ever did - those docs are now diffused across lots of web pages.

It is also used as the basis of OGL and Vulkan, and indeed all current consumer GPUs. Yes its old, but the rules haven't changed much since then.

It is my immense pleasure to introduce you to the single best Gundam promotional video ever made. It is a live action faux-interview of two elderly survivors of the One Year War, one from each side of the war, 50 years after.

Here’s something cool I didn’t hear anyone into mainstream games talk about yet. Blizzard made a pretty big post detailing some of the things they’re overhauling after the Diablo IV betas, most of which reads like big patch notes. Between all the balance changes we have this in the “UI” Section:
“Fixed an issue where the built-in Screen Reader was not reading key prompts, game options details, and other UI text.”

THis is great to see. Question is if we’ll see any more accessibility updates at launch or is this changelog all we’ll get. But even then it sounds like Diablo IV is going to be almost a live service game with many updates planned so who knows. You can read the entire post here:

#Finland Olkiluoto #nuclear power plant block 3 is now going into full power after being first connected to the electrical grid in May 2022. The power capacity of the new block is 1600 MW and levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) 42 EUR/MWh, even after all delays that plagued the plant due to changing legislative environment.

In Praise of Those Who Leak

crimethinc.com/StealfromWork20…

For Steal Something from Work Day 2023, we focus on a particular kind of workplace theft: the leak.

In the information age, knowledge is power. The circulation of classified information is integral to the repressive institutions that maintain the prevailing order.

The less that these institutions can trust each other and their own employees, the harder it becomes for them to respond rapidly and coordinate. If information is the blood in the bloodstream of the security state, persistent leaks coagulate that blood.

So here is our challenge to you, begrudging employee. The same capitalist economy that keeps you chained to your work station runs on the information that passes before your eyes every day.

At some point, something may cross your field of vision that could be useful to someone engaged in the struggle for a better world. If you see something—say something.

US trans politics, missouri trans healthcare recommendation :boosts_ok_gay:

Any missourians about to lose trans healthcare in the KC metro area, the University of Kansas hospital is right across the border and I can personally vouch that their trans healthcare team is amazing, they've had some ups and downs, but I was a patient with them from 2017 when they started the clinic all the way to 2022 when I left the state.

They do require a letter for HRT, BUT If you're already on hormones they'll help you stay on them while the letter gets sorted out. I hope this helps someone here :ablobcatheartsqueeze:
