@BorrisInABox @MutedTrampet Yeah it’s crazy. I thought it grew a lot before but now you have people talking to these original composers and getting all the unreleased or alternate contents and the stories behind them, it’s wild. I remember when around 2014 I discovered a few recordings on YouTube of a few Samsung phones using Yamaha’s SMAF chip, then spent forever finding even a small handful of actual .mmf files and something to play them with… And now we have sighted people involved who know how to dump sounds off of feature phones so between that and all the effort that was taken to talk to the composers the project has now archived so much cool content.

An Oakland-based company called Brimstone broke through that hurdle. On Wednesday, it announced it received third-party certification that its carbon-negative cement is structurally and chemically the same as regular cement. The company says it is the first carbon-neutral or carbon-negative cement to meet that building requirement. #engineering #sustainability #construction #GreenTechnology washingtonpost.com/climate-sol…

Striking Ron Perlman on the studio exec who said "The endgame is to allow things to drag on until union members start losing their houses":

Sure, that's all it was: a mistake. He's a college-educated graduate of a law school — a lawyer, for godssake! — and he voted twice in the last two elections, in two different states, no less, because it was a mistake.

You'll be shocked to learn he's a Trump supporter.

Interesting to see #gnome post about their #macOS CI builder issues the day after I posted a video about "understanding who your open source constituency is".

It's pretty clear that macOS users are not Gnome's constituency. Fine. But it also goes to show just how much #inkscape, #gimp and other Free Software downstream must also not be their constituency because we're so misaligned on this topic and there's no discussion about our relationship with gnome

Communal Bonfires; creating space for group-scale discourse on top of @matrix

blog.erlend.sh/communal-bonfir…

Today we're pre-releasing Commune, our first foundational step towards a community platform built specifically for alignment with digital gardens.

Cyber-ecological messaging anyone?!

It's an evolving piece of software serving as the primary bonfire component of the overarching Community OS concept.

Today’s newsletter has some new usage stats for Threads, plus what Meta execs told employees is coming next during an internal Q&A yesterday.

First, the stats:
- 70+ billion impressions
- 450+ million posts (excluding reposts)
- 4.5+ billion likes

theverge.com/2023/7/14/2379513…

Am collecting Mastodon server software feature requests - specifically for moderation enhancement that might be helpful as #Threads federates in.

Looking for those that can be doable inside a month or two timeframe, and that don't need #ActivtyPub spec to change first. (Which takes time)

See what you think of this list: and add any others you think fit to me in the comments.

This is amazingly fucked up. Broadcasters are trying to pass a new standard for broadcasting that allows them to encrypt their broadcasts.

This means that people who use antennas to watch television will have to pay to upgrade their equipment and then pay on top of that to actually watch.

The airwaves are a limited resource that broadcasters get free access to. This amounts to a huge policy change that steals a common resource for corporate gains.
