A curiosity about linguistics and word formation. Is there a name for the phenomenon where a word or compound gains a new meaning from an association with a specific (real or fictional) incident? I thought it might be metonymy, but I think this is a bit more specific.

A few English examples: gaslighting (other than literal use of gas burning for lights), trickle-down, Peterloo, pizzagate.

I'm referring to cases where the encoding does not refer to the ordinary meaning of the words or even a metaphorical extension, but to some specific incidental use. Closest I've seen talking about this is this article about compound formation referring to cognitive linguistics and counterintuitive compounds: preprints.org/manuscript/20200…

#Watchmate v0.5.0 is out - a companion app for #InfiniTime powered #PineTime smart watch! It is already available on Flathub, and hopefully soon as community distro packages.

@simon A decent microphone, excellent mic technique and of course an exceptional performance made it quite easy. And several covers to fine tune the mix and improve with each one. The only thing I realize now that I might have done is add a slight bit more de-essing and maybe increase the reverb ever so slightly in the big harmonies in the middle. I was contemplating the volume of the background track, but I found this way the vocals and instrumentation kind of weave in and out of each other nicely without a lot of volume automation. A lot of this is personal preference of course but overall I think I’ve found something that works quite well for us but naturally I’m always open for suggestions. But let’s be real here I’m not the reason this is as good as it is. That’s all her.

Some ten years ago Shoutcast used to offer a possibility where by calling up a certain URL with a media player, it would return a playlist of ten randomly selected stations out of the entire catalogue. Launching that and listening to the first thing it would pick was a huge part of my morning routine back then and was especially useful during long commutes to school. My appreciation for music from different genres and corners of the world has expanded beyond imagination and every day I would be wondering what is it gonna be today: A morning show on a station somewhere in Greece, a bit of Liszt and Brahms or perhaps an obscure oldschool hiphop mixtape from the depths of Soundcloud. I was reminded about it last week as I put on a podcast in Hungarian and felt like I was on holiday and listening to a local station, not understanding a word but feeling connected with something local at the place I'm at - a really good feeling. Here's an idea for someone with a bit of time and coding skills to spare: we've got Radio Browser and its directory of over 30.000 stations. It's got an API method for fetching an array of randomly selected stations. Perhaps it would be possible to add this as a feature of an existing Radio Browser supporting app or create a dedicated gateway which, upon calling its URL with a media player would hit the RB API with a request and present a random station or more. Can't wait to get out of the usual bubble of streaming services' recommendations of music and experiencing all of the languages available. @chockenberry @stroughtonsmith @app #Radio #App #OpenSource

The thing is the requests are cached server side so we need to wait some 10 minutes in order to get it randomized again. If we all would start doing it we would be retrieving the same list from their cache.

We can spice it up by randomizing the offset for example

With this knowledge you can build your desktop shortcut to your favorite media player such as:
vlc "https://de1.api.radio-browser.info/m3u/stations/search?order=random&limit=10&offset=%RANDOM%"

Usually I drink Taiwanese oolongs but farmers in Thailand and India and Nepal have been doing good work with some cultivars. “Ruby oolong” seems to be a variant of ‘jin xuan’, which is what I drink more of. This one from Darjeeling is velvety, fruitier than a jin xuan

If anybody needs a way to effectively block Youtube ads on the Mac, the pro version of AdGuard seems to do the trick. I got it around 2021 from some shady Russian website, I cannot guarantee anything of course, but my key does work, the trick is to activate directly in the app, without trying to associate the key with an account. Today is November 4th. On this day three years ago, war was declared in Ethiopia's Tigray region. It ended up being among the bloodiest civil wars of our era, and killed hundreds of thousands by the time it ended on Nov 3rd 2022. We are still investigating atrocities and alleged atrocities until this day.

The conflict completely changed me as a person forever, in so many ways.

Otros años para aprender estuve haciendo el Advent of Code, que está bien porque son problemas relativamente cortos y autocontenidos con soluciones que no son ambiguas.

Me gusta mucho la expresividad del sistema de tipos, y, por ejemplo, como uno se asegura de tratar los posibles errores de una Option o Result, y como funciona match con las enums.
