I really like the idea of, instead of collaborating on a document via (for example) Google's servers and Google Docs, being able to have collaborators' computers talk to each other directly and share edits that way.

I really hope that "local-first" gains at least the sort of steam the FOSS movement has — as I've seen people comment, FOSS doesn't help if your computation is happening on someone else's computer.

in reply to Reilly Spitzfaden (they/them)

Local first has some really gnarly problems that you pretty much need centralized servers to fix, one way or another. Direct connectivity between people isn't possible any more. THe fact that most people are on devices that heavily restrict background app activity to make the batteries actually last, the IPV4 shortage, lack of IPV6 adoption and CG NATS don't help either.

Isaac Hayes III posted on Sunday that ♦️Donald Trump and his campaign have been served in their #federal #lawsuit alleging 134 instances of #copyright #infringement.

Just like anyone else, ⚠️political campaigns are not allowed to use music for their own gain without permission or buying a license.

Since Trump has continued to violate the copyright of the Hayes estate, 🔸an emergency federal hearing was granted on September 3.

By choosing to disrespect the rights and work of others, Donald Trump is now forced to show up in federal civil court as the defendant in a case that could cost him millions of dollars.

Utterly crappy weekend here. The loudest noise I can make is a cough, and lifting anything heavier than a plate sends me into paroxysms of coughing and spluttering.
I have the attention span and stamina of a toddler and feel, not to put too fine a point on it, absolutely blarg.
Thanks, Covid and postcovid chest thing.
At least my misery about the dog has been upgraded to actual physical issues.
in reply to Sean Randall

I'm really sorry you're having such a tough time. I hope you feel better really soon.
in reply to Lulu Hartgen

@lulu_bear I feel really bad about work; I booked the whole week off for London then just zonked out completely this past week also.
Granted, it's a bank holiday that's still a lot of time off.

Can't help being ill, I guess, just feels wrong. Fingers crossed I pick up soon

in reply to Sean Randall

@lulu_bear I sure hope you feel better soon, Covid is no joke, I've had it several times and already suffer with breathing issues.

Unfortunately, your New Features video is completely inaccessible to blind users since all I hear is music. There's no audio description or verbal narrative of any kind. Admittedly, you do have the transcript which is certainly accessible and it does help but at that point I'd rather just read the page containing more details about the new features.

In Afghanistan, the Taliban's Minister of Education has announced that girls' schools are likely to remain closed permanently.

As a Muslim let me be explicitly clear. This is apartheid, vile, & inexcusable.

Prophet Muhammad(sa) declared, "It is incumbent upon every Muslim male & every Muslim female to attain education." His wife Ayesha was a leading scholar & jurist. His final words were "women are your committed partners." Not servants—PARTNERS.

Taliban terrorists are a stain on humanity.

@brawnybunkbedbuddy We think that showing a donation message only once every six months is not "nagging:" Donations are absolutely essential for the future health of LibreOffice. If you really don't want the message once every six months, you can disable it: Open Expert Configuration and search for LastTime. Change the values of LastTimeGetInvolvedShown and LastTimeDonateShown to the maximum allowed value of 2147483646.
in reply to LibreOffice

im talking about notifications overall - these should be configurable at ease with a simple click from main options, not from "expert configuration" that will be overwritten after next release. and that did happen to me on both linux and windows.

i like LO but how you handle this thing is just copypasting corporate software behavior.

The second time in a month my #ArchLinux laptop froze during update.
Always the same scenario. Sunday, I returned from trip, waked the laptop up from sleep, run yay -Syu, went to unpack, and then found laptop frozen.
I suspect #nvidia as it always is problem with their shitty driver.

So again:
1️⃣ disable secure boot
2️⃣ boot using arch netboot
3️⃣ unlock and mount root and efi drives
4️⃣ delete pacman lock files
5️⃣ reinstall all packages
6️⃣ reboot
7️⃣ enable secureboot
8️⃣ boot normally

🙄

I was having a similar frozing problems on with some versions of QubesOS, which is Fedora based. Fixed with installing kernel-latest package with a newer kernel version. It can inspire You to solve.
in reply to 🌹 𝐫𝐮𝐳𝐚 ✅ (eng🇬🇧)

I use latest stable kernel that Arch provides. This is probably really a nvidia problem. It fails to wake up from sleep mode properly from time to time.

A je to tu. Venku je regulérní tma. Ani narůžovělý pásek nad obzorem. A dneska nám tu prší. Což ale beru jako opravdu příjemnou změnu. Vodu ven pořád ještě nemáme nataženou. Chodím zalívat konvemi. A to znamená konve do koupelny a z koupelny běh po zahradě....

The Nazis killed my entire family except my great grandparents who came to the US.

Everyone, there were no survivors as far as anyone knows.

So if I say it's my opinion that Republicans are Nazis and I mean they are similar to the historical Nazis and might become as dangerous, I do actually know what I am talking about.

They plan to build concentration camps for 1 million immigrants. After they deport the first million what do they plan to do with those camps? You imagine they will just get rid of them? Hmm.

It has been three and a half months since I announced “I will make Papers – the soon-to-be default document viewer in GNOME – work on mobile, while improving the UI in general.”

For that, I was granted a stipend by Google Open Source. And, I would say: I delivered on this promise—see for your self, with the next release of Papers.

Now, my project is over (but I am here to stay), and if you want to read a bit more about what I did, I’ll humbly recommend my blog post: blogs.gnome.org/camelcasenick/…

If you have a raspberry pi 4 or 5 running Arch Linux, and after updating you suddenly have no wifi, this solution worked for me. Simple steps:

  • Create the file /etc/modprobe.d/brcmfmac.conf
  • Add the following line to the file:
    options brcmfmac feature_disable=0x82000
  • Save and reboot.

I've just been sitting here trying to play the synth riff from Axel F's Theme on clarinet in every key. I suck at it. The easiest for me are concert G miner, C miner and d miner. I can mostly manage everything else, but not at speed. That's my silly practice thing, I guess.
This entry was edited (2 months ago)
in reply to Patrick Perdue

I've known that riff since I was a kid but didn't know what the piece was called. Thank you.

You've taken a perfectly fine door and given it anxiety.

If the term "LI-FI" becomes a thing, expect all the "lie-Fi" puns. Oh, my LI-FI is lying to me about the speeds, it's definitely sus!

I really can't see it taking off though if it is can't go threw walls. I just can't see that working well.
in reply to JamminJerry

@JamminJerry yeah, it for sure won't replace internet with that limitatiion. I do think it has a good use case for hospitals, home automation, things that are better left more secure by not being as internet-connected from a distance, or need to pass high communication quickly across things.
in reply to Tamas G

I don't know. I still can't see it working even in places like that. I mean if the two devices are not in the same room, forget it. it won't work.
in reply to Tamas G

That article seemed more like a marketing copy. I rememberr the early research articles from the oughts. It seemed to be so promising.
