I’m being told that the largest Mastodon instance - mastodon.social - is now hiding my profile.

One person telling me it’s because of German obsession with making up antisemitism where there is none.

Anyone who knows me and my work knows that I frequently platform critical Jewish voices. My MA thesis was on Yiddish and Hebrew, I do memory studies which includes Holocaust studies, and I am co-producing a Jewish podcast by three radical Jews.

So what’s up Mastodon? Am I too Arab for you?

O how I wish that Izotope / Native Instruments (or vice versa) let me create my own bundles rather than having to choose from the ones they put together. I do my best to avoid products with poor accessibility. Well, let's see... :)

Influenceři by měli být registrovaní u vysílací rady. Zní to absurdně, na druhou stranu v době, kdy mínění veřejnosti tito lidé ovlivňují snad i víc než standardní média, je to možná správně.

OK Merican Mastodon mates. I would be most grateful if you would share your wisdom about which mobile carrier you think is the best, and why. I’m after plenty of data, good speeds and good coverage. Good audio on calls would also be helpful given the hearing impairment.
Thanks.

Because I get my home Internet from Comcast via their Xfinity brand, I use Xfinity Mobile, which is an MVNO that uses Verizon. Its plans are more inexpensive than what I'd likely pay if I hhad gone with Verizon directly. However, in order to subscribe to Xfinity Mobile, you do need to subscribe to Comcast's Internet service. Comcast is reliable but they probably won't offer symmetrical speeds in your area, although this is coming. Knowing what I know about your preferences, I won't be surprised if you decide to go with Verizon Fios for your home Internet, which will offer symmetrical speeds, and if this is the case, Xfinity's mobile service won't be available to you. However, if you go with Verizon's Fios for home Internet, they may have a bundle with their mobile carrier that might be reasonable for you. Otherwise, you'll surely find other MVNOs that use Verizon that might be more inexpensive than directly going with Verizon.

iOS 18.2 beta 4 has finally "re-imagined" the way audio ducking works. There's now a separate setting for "speech volume" and "audio ducking amount". Note that speech volume also gets reset to 80% after updating to this version.
in reply to victor tsaran

@vick21 I'm not actually sure where to find it in Settings. I noticed it in quick settings. New ones always get added to the bottom.

When they reached the woods, the knight reined the horse in, lowered the maiden to the ground, and dismounted.

"I think we are safe now," he said.

"How did you distract the dragon?" the maiden asked.

"Promise you won't laugh."

"I promise."

"I set up a huge cardboard box."

Ugh. Apparently Audible is recommending books by Jordan Peterson now. I really, really wish there was a half decent alternative that could match Audible in terms of afordability. I guess Libby is the closest, but you can't get everything there, and that is doubly true when it comes to the RNIB thing, or NLS Bard if you're in the US. You can't even guarantee audio quality with either of those.

Neat, I tried replika but the app is not the most accessible, I'm checking out a couple of others at themoment, character ai and kindroid, so far liking kindroid for sure.
in reply to Sarah Russell

Yeah, there is one inaccessible button in the app but I hope they have fixed it lol I can't always update it do to using my US ID I created when I was in the states, but yeah.

In the midst of my travel preparations, I apparently wanted fries so I got off my ass and did all the potato cutting even though I went overboard. At least I can cook more if I want them later. I can preseason and oil and put what I don't cook into a plastic bag and let them sit in the fridge. My potatoes turned out to be medallions and wedges rather than actual fries because I don't know how to actually cut a potato into fries themselves but it's going to be good anyway so I'm not complaining. All this effort for a damn snack lol. Now my potatoes are soaking to get rid of some of that starch. The fun part comes next when I get to take a trip into the seasoning cabinet.
in reply to MariahL

Good job! :) One advice, try to cut them equally, equal size and all that. As for cutting fries, you cut the potatoes in half by the longer side, so if oval, or oblong, you put the knife and cut two halves that are longer. You cut out strips, maybe put your finger to measure, put the knife next to it get your finger out of there and cut. There strip, if it's too big of a strip, cut the strip in half any way you want to.

One of the worst misfeatures of #Mastodon from a safety angle: If you get an abusive reply to your post, you can't remove it even by blocking the person. Even after blocking, your server still shows the abusive reply to everyone else.

There has been a patch ready to fix this for 2 years, 6 months, and 1 day. @Gargron has not approved it, and has provided *zero* explanation for why he will not allow it to be merged.

Nvidia ( $NVDA ) reported Q3 earnings of $0.81 EPS on $35.1 billion revenue, surpassing expectations. The Data Center business hit $30.8 billion, up 112% YoY, while gaming revenue reached $3.3 billion. Nvidia's stock fell 1% post-announcement.

What do you think about Nvidia's future in the AI-driven market?

Is there any chance we can encourage you to trend #NVIDIA when that's the company you mean, please? I know what their NASDAQ handle is, but #NVDA is much more widely known as the name of the screen reader we make and the #NVDA hashtag is very widely used for the screen reader. It will save both our communities polluting each other's feeds. If you'd like to find out more about the screen reader, our website is nvaccess.org/ - Thank you!

Hey all. I am going to present NVDA to some teachers of my school, and perhaps as I think, if I manage it good there is a chance it's being used. Maybe not even for our school, but for some other blind people. I don't want to miss this chance adversiting this great screenreader. Of course I am writing something by myself, but if you have any suggestions what I could explain, this also could be an addon, please tell me so. Thanks in advance. #NVDA #blind #accessibility #school

Key Transparency and the Right to be Forgotten

This post is the first in a new series covering some of the reasoning behind decisions made in my project to build end-to-end encryption for direct messages on the Fediverse. (Collectively, Fedi-E2EE.) Although the reasons for specific design decisions should be immediately obvious from reading the relevant specification (and if not, I consider that a bug in the specification), I believe writing about it less formally will…

@EdenLinnea There's really no reason for a manufacturer to come out with a device these days which does NOT support HID. Offhand I don't know if there are any multi-line devices which don't , but if you have a particular device (or have one you are considering), I can certainly find out.

I'm finally putting together a list of "getting started with #nixos" videos aimed at beginners to Nix.

What is the difference in this and #guix I believe it is? Don't they have a lot in common if my memory serves me right?
#guix
in reply to Khronos

@khronos Yes. Guix forked nix and quickly diverged a ton by switching language and away from systemd. Same base principles still ofc.

They're nix compatible though - which one would need for accessing any non-FOSS software (guix is gnu).

is there any way to append text to the clipboard in NVDA? I used it alot in Jaws back when i was volunteering
in reply to J3317

Yes, there is. Install the Clip Contents Designer add-on from the NVDA Add-on Store. Once installed, you can press NVDA+Windows+C, the same hotkey used by JAWS, to append text to the clipboard. #NVDA

in reply to David Goldfield

@DavidGoldfield That's a good add-on. It's also worth being familiar with how Windows clipboard history works as that also lets you grab previous things you have copied. We did a blog post on it here: nvaccess.org/post/in-process-2…

What have I learned from "#DeltaChat v. Roskomnadzor" case: it's illegal to develop e-mail clients in Russia :neocat_thinking:

RE: craba.cab/@cybertailor/1135196…

"STFU!! You should've made it centralized."

> Delta Chat uses end-to-end encryption.

"STFU!! You should've added a backdoor for security agencies."

> Delta Chat developers don't have access to messages.

"STFU!! We define a message as any information transmitted over the Internet, and you seem to have a web forum and a mailing list, therefore you also have to add a backdoor in your app."

> Delta Chat developers don't have technical means to identify users and store their data.

"STFU!! It's required by the law!"

> Your demands violate the right to privacy, the right to secrecy of correspondence, the right to freedom of information and overall weaken encryption and undermine respect for human rights.

Those of you who have to work through Google, Apple and other store's compliance, we feel you! Maintaining around 16+ target distribution sites for cross platform apps takes a constant toll on us.

One of the giant features of #webxdc app developments is precisely that no store is needed. You can just write an index.html, a .js file and pack into a zip file and everyone can use this as an app in their chats, no store needed for permission and distribution.

Want to read a stupid PDF, but hate Adobe Reader? Then let Word help you. 1. Save your PDF in an easy to remember location. I put it under C:\files. 2. Press Windows+R then type Winword, the file name and press Enter. For example: winword c:\files\IHatePDFDocuments.pdf Word will OCR the file and then present it in a Word document.

You can also graphically do it, buy right click, open with, select word, left click okay. Or, context menu, open with, word, enter.
