In most ways I hate it, but as a disabled person who cannot carry a drivers license, having a form of ID other than a passport that companies are forced to accept would be nice. No Jane at the till in Tesco I don't carry my passport in my arse pocket.

@fireborn some countries give non permit to drive driving licences which would be easy to do in the UK. Just give the DVLA a bit more money. I'd probably still have a passport as well (I can't drive for disability reasons) but a a more portable thing would be useful.
ID cards like proposed wouldn't fix the claimed problem and I don't trust any governments right now
@NatalyaD I think we actually can get provisional driving licenses, but that requires the person you're talking to actually knowing what they're talking about. I could be wrong about this myself, as I've never tried, just heard that it is possible.
@simon how many systems that don't have __int128_t do you expect to perform such large transfers, though? Maybe it can just be progressive enhancement?
128-bit math is ... tricky. We implemented a 128-bit type for n-dimensional arrays to represent images in our #ImgLib2 library for image processing. So many gotchas in defining basic arithmetic operations; at some point in version history all our custom implementations were replaced by java's BigInteger's. github.com/imglib/imglib2/blobβ¦
Our motivating use case? Integral images (summed-area table: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Summed-a⦠). But now the 128-bit type has found other uses too.
For reference, this is roughly where the aggregated data from the big LHC experiments expect to have around 2031-2032. The data management plan is not to put it in one big file though.
Hm. I could see a (very limited) practical use case for this from around 2040-2050 then, like "consolidate the 20 ZB of old data from 2030-2033 to cold storage to make room for new stuff on the active storage near computing".
And while a single curl command is not the most likely tool choice, it would be neat if it was viable.
@kytta primarily that #curl is C89 compliant so we can't rely on C99 types so we have our own, and we actually only have a signed version atm. Mostly out of laziness.
Hi @NVAccess I was just looking at the Alpha snapshots and noticed that the latest ones are downloading as 0 byte files. Another one several entries down showed a size of 18 mb and wouldn't run either. I just wanted to reach out to see if this is known. The last one that runs is: nvda_snapshot_alpha-52731,f294547a.exe. Current ones don't let me run them to try and get a log, as it shows the message "this app can't run on your PC." Thank you very much for your time and I look forward to any input you may have. @libreoffice@fosstodon.org I'm noticing that it seems to take disproportionately much longer to save an ODT document with tracked changes than one without. It's a difference between one or two seconds, or fifteen to twenty seconds of 100% utilization on one core.
Is this behavior (a) known, and (b) expected?
(I'm not completely certain that it's track-changes involved. It might also be a factor of having at some point been saved as .DOCX. I do not have a full history of all changes made to the relevant document.)

@gklein88 nah, just potential ram. :) The moment I load an ollama 7B or 14B model in, at least anywhere from 16 to 30 gigs of that can eat up in an instant. So i like to keep it maximized in case I need it later for something.
@ppatel lol I feel like for running 27B or above models on anything, Linux will probably be it because of that low ram usage. If the OS itself only uses less than 10% of your ram, you've got a lot to work with for tokenizing and the model. I eventually do plan to get an eGPU but for now Linux actually supports iGPUs better than Windows for Ollama, so it's my best bet for any iGPU acceleration to help even. On Windows you're stuck on crappy CPU-only inferencing, ugh.
@FreakyFwoof @ppatel yeah, I think on the iGPU the most I'll eek out is maybe the 20B with fairly decent tokens per sec, nowhere near 5080 territory but at least closer to Mac. I think for a 27B model you need closer to 32 GB Ram so I don't think it could run out of the 24 Unified I have here, should have grabbed 48 but it wasn't worth the $400 premium to me to jump SKUs. Ah well.
@FreakyFwoof I've finally decided on purchasing one of the Thinkpad P series of laptops that Lenovo is about to release in October. Depending on the model, they'll have either the NVIDIA H1000 or H2000 built in. I plan to duel boot that thing with Debian.

So I've just started my masters in CS. This is a program designed for people like myself who don't have much coding experience but want to learn more. Had a meeting with one of the TAs today and he pointed out that people who worry about AI replacing jobs are completely missing the point. Yes, AI will be used more and more in the future, but it may never be at a level where someone will simply be able to "vibe code" a solution without putting any actual work in. These models are really good at generating little snippets of code, but at this point in time, simply cannot operate autonomously without human intervention.

Has anyone looked at whether using #AI for coding will hold back adopting of new (improved) language tools and standards?
For example, #Drupal has used annotations for plugins for years, while #PHP attributes are the new preferred syntax. AIs are trained off of code of the past, which for plugins was all annotations until attributes were introduced. Does that mean the stochastic coding parrot will continue to suggest annotations because of their stronger weight in the training set?
