Look at little Mercury transiting in front of the Sun! This scene wasn't visible from Earth, but NASA's STEREO A spacecraft caught it on April 7.

(The video is greatly sped up; the actual event took several hours.)

‼️ No es un hecho aislado: la red de ductos en mal estado expone a varias localidades en el norte de Veracruz. Las afectaciones se encadenan a lo largo de su trayecto.

I find it disillusioning to see the casual use of "AI" slowly creeping into our hacker circles. Most of the discussions about AI focus on the quality of its output. I think we're not doing a good job communicating its more fundamental dangers.

In this blog post I write about how tools shape who we are and why the resource intensiveness of AI is ingrained in its purpose. About the devaluation of skills, and power cycles.

Let me know what you think.

Hello Mastodon Family! Lena here from marketing. I'm writing an article on instant messengers with interoperability and I'm looking for some more information on what actually makes a messenger interoperable. I thought of focusing on: Element, Delta, and SimpleX but I'm open to other suggestions! Could anyone kindly advise? ☺️

This quote in particular is damning:

"The WIN plan, for example, assumes that offshore wind will provide around 60% of all CO2 -free electricity generated in the Netherlands by 2040, based on capacity factors as high as 53% (in average). If, instead, the system-average capacity factor proves to be closer to 34.6%—as predicted by our theoretical model and supported by global operational trends—then more than 20% of the Netherlands’ planned CO2 -free electricity supply will be missing by 2040 due to the shortfall in offshore wind generation alone."

in reply to Emil Jacobs - Collectifission

Translation: the planned 70 GW in offshore wind won't generate 370 TWh annually, but a mere 215 TWh. This 155 TWh drop is equivalent to twelve of the biggest nuclear power plants we can build today, the EPR.

Yes, TWELVE.

Given that offshore wind is presented as the most important backbone of the Dutch energy transition, this is a real big f'ing problem. There is no real solution besides, well, building more than the currently planned four nuclear power plants. A lot more.

Last week in a seminar we discussed a text that was largely about sexual violence, including mass rape during war. Heavy stuff.

One student admitted they had not read the text but worked off a ChatGPT summary.

They had no idea the text was about sexual violence. ChatGPT withheld that information.

This wasn’t just a minor error nor a typical LLM hallucination.

About a third of the text, arguably its most important part, went completely ignored because it didn’t match OpenAI’s content policies

You've stopped Gemini to track your Gmail? Now turn it off in Google Search as well! 👉 Swipe for the steps.

And no, Google doesn't have a button to "Turn off AI Overviews" but these workarounds do the trick.

You're welcome! 🤗

If you want, you can add an option for Google's search engine in your browser to results with no AI. You can do the same with DuckDuckGo. See both examples below in Firefox (in Dutch, but it's relatively straightforward in other languages).

After you have added these, you can delete the default search engine entries for both.

As far as I know, the procedure for Chromium-based browsers is broadly similar.
