Hey blind people, what is the recommended accessible format for distributing text-only content? So that a short text of a couple hundred words is browsable, searchable and the structure is understandable?
Am I correct is assuming that a well-structured PDF with all the titles set correctly would do the trick? Or is there some secret file format that is much better suited?
The document is intended to be distributed as downloadable file, not as a website.
(Sighted people feel free to boost but for the love of everything please do not try to answer)
Properly tagged PDFs can work, but depending on how the PDF is generated, getting the tagging done correctly can be anything from slightly tricky to impossible. But if you go with epub, it's pretty much the same as generating accessible HTML. A lot easier.
@fastfinge I try not to be dogmatic about much in accessibility. But one hill I will proudly die on every time is that there is no such thing as a universally accessible PDF.
You can get the tags right, test with users, spend 12 thousand dollars on it being professionally evaluated and remediated...
And then I'll open it on my phone, or in Chrome, or in Firefox, or in basically anything that isn't Acrobat and it will go wrong.
Maybe just a little bit, with a paragraph being incorrectly spread across multiple lines. Maybe a lot, with all of your expensive and careful tagging being completely discarded.
You don't know what will happen, I don't know what will happen. given that one of the only real selling points of PDF is that it will retain and faithfully reproduce visual layout and formatting, the fact that not even the tiniest bit of accessibility consistency exists makes it a rotten ecosystem.
@fastfinge And yes, I know lots of people have put lots of effort into PDF accessibility, both at the big tech and open source levels. My aim is not to dismiss that, but rather to acknowledge how practically bad things still are.
Mozilla, for instance, have probably come closest to creating a PDF parser -> renderer pipeline that respects accessibility tags and isn't made by Adobe. But even Firefox breaks single runs of text across screen reader cursor lines, sometimes with as little as one character each making text hard or impossible to follow.
On iOS, meanwhile, I can't reliably use VoiceOver's explore by touch in a PDF rendered by Apple's own software, which also occasionally turns individual letters or random bits of words into their own swipe targets while stripping Whitespace.
The various apps made specifically for blind readers with PDF support? I don't even trust them to accurately extract all the text, let alone present the tagging and formatting correctly.
@fastfinge Invariably, someone will read posts like this and think—maybe even post—PDF's not all that bad. They read a set restaurant menu on their phone just the other day!
What I say to that is: good, I'm glad they could do that. But also, they can't even independently be sure that they actually did read the full menu.
Still, that's two pages of relatively low stakes text. It's not a 265-page legal document which even Acrobat's accessibility layer took seven minutes to render and then caused the software to crash upon navigating to the first footnote.
@WeirdWriter@skye The issue with HTML is that a lot of browsers these days will refuse to download HTML, and will just open it. For less techy people, actually saving an HTML file they got from a link can be challenging. And markdown is fine on desktop, but I'm not aware of anything on mobile that allows navigating by headings in a markdown file. Personally I'd say epub. There are free programs on all the platforms that can open epub, browsers just download it by default, making accessible epubs is as easy as making accessible html, and it will work for blind and sighted alike so you don't need to create two different documents.

@TomGrant91 Per default Telegrams private chats are not e2e, only if you manually enable secure chat for each chat. WhatsApp collects metadata, and is by Meta, sorry but that says all, if you don't know why Meta is bad it's time to educate, I keep hearing new stuff about stuff they did previously basically every week, it's actually quite interesting.
@TomGrant91 @jonathan859 I would prefer not to be using Whatsapp or Telegram if I could avoid it. There is a chat service called Delta which may be more secure and Signal of course, which we have already discussed. It may be worth getting sighted assistance to make that work.

@TomGrant91 @JustinMac84 How exactly does HCaptcha play a role here? No it doesn't. Voice over accessibility, and accessibility with any client is quite good.
@jonathan859 @JustinMac84 Oh, signal for PC uses HCaptcha. If you don't back up your chats, it will ask you to and they you get asked to fill in the captcha. On the phone, you don't have to do this.

salted top Stone Wheat Thins are discontinued here. They had a nice thickness and wheat like taste (umami maybe) with small seeds providing texture. It provided a good combination with slices of multi-year aged cheddar (older/stronger than “extra old”). It was ok with other cracker toppings too. I used to like and prefer ritz, and vegetable thins though I have not been exposed to much. I think Sky Flakes or something like that was a nice bread like flavour. Please share more

I think I hate this new GitHub pull request experience. How the actual Zarq are you supposed to quickly jump between lines with comments? I guess I can search for "has comments" and press focus mode and then enter on every single one, but that is utterly awful.
They've taken a relatively efficient screen reader code review experience (albeit requiring Greasemonkey) and turned it into something that makes me want to gnaw off my own limbs.
@bill I get that they've done a bunch of interesting work to make it possible to navigate code in focus mode, which is theoretically nice, but honestly, I find it far less efficient overall.
I agree. Personally I always used the plaintext view (append .diff to the URL) for the actual code review, and the files changed UI for comments, so this breaks far more than it fixes in my situation.
It's getting to a point where I'm considering doing as much of it as I can locally. It helps that most of what I'm doing these days is for myself and not comunity based.
