Got a new app.
FileDentify.
Accessible Windows file identification utility for checking what a file is from its actual contents, rather than relying only on the file name or extension.
It's a part of mine and @arfy's SendTo package but you can also download it from github: github.com/OnjLouis/FileDentif…
It was able to pull all sorts of info out of VMDK disks, Roland expansions and all sorts of other weird and wonderful things.
This all stemmed from a conversation I had recently with someone about how the Linux file command doesn't exist for windows.
I've tried to address that as best I can.
Try opening a file and then going to 'Readable Text' and well, see what happens...

Actually the Linux File command does exist if you have Cygwin installed.
@jaybird110127 Yeah, same for wsl but.... Look at the file size compared to either of those. That's like a virtual paperweight on your drive.

The changelog for 1.1 is 29 items long, so won't post that. What I will post is the 'When to use FileDentify' section from the manual instead.
You should read the changelog though if you're using this app, it is kinda ridiculous.
As per-usual with any of my apps, you can update with Shift+F1, or if you're new, download from onj.me/software.
FileDentify is not meant to make existing tools obsolete. If Windows already tells you what you need, or if a one-line file result from WSL, Cygwin, MSYS2, or another Unix-like environment is enough, use that. Those tools are fast, familiar, and excellent for quick identification.
Use FileDentify when you want more context on Windows: a screen-reader-friendly tree, selected-item details, hashes, readable strings, byte offsets, an advanced text/hex/binary/octal viewer, HTML or plain-text reports, folder and multi-file overviews, Send To integration, and Windows-specific metadata.
FileDentify includes embedded Unix file/libmagic so reports start with a broad, familiar identification engine. FileDentify then adds its own Windows and format-specific sections, such as shortcuts, installers, media metadata, virtual disks, sample-library formats, Native Instruments files, Cubase projects, game files, old phone tones, Clipman files, and other structures where useful information can be surfaced.
The practical rule is simple: use the tool already on your system when it answers the question. Use FileDentify when you want to inspect, compare, save, share, or review the evidence more comfortably.

Clipman is a very nice app and from an accessibility standpoint a model of excellence.
@brian I try to aim for that with every single app I put out, even the small ones. I actually tell my agents to look at Clipman and Sensor Readout source and manuals for the conventions I expect from my apps, so they feel uniform. I adopted Shift+F1 to update in Sensor Readout, then I made everything else do that, for example. Mnemonics are important (you know this of course) so having standards is so important so that if you're designing stuff to work together, it feels like it came from the same place.

I'm really serious. It's a very nice app. What I like about it is that JAWS is not over-talking. It is just saying what it needs to say, and you've got a nice standard list view going on there, so we can filter out any columns we don't want.

Well I'm probably not the best person to do it right now because I've only had it installed a few minutes. But maybe later yes. With a standard list view control, you can have JAWS speak or Braille any columns you want and in whichever order you want. Because your list view has proper column headers, and is a standard list view control, JAWS can latch onto that and make it possible.
@brian OO I see. I thought you had it a bit longer than that, well I hope you enjoy discovering the features.
One thing that jumps out at me, and please forgive me if this is in the app already. I may want to check the spelling of something on the clipboard, or copy a specific segment out of the entry. But what I cannot see right now is a way of doing that; to place the data in an edit field for review.

@brian Everything should also either exist in the application key, or in the relevant menus as well. I really don't like apps that don't expose everything via menus. Makes it hard to find anything.

Oh, I love that sound. I remember playing with that thing as a kid.
A few years ago, I got a pine box, and screwed about 12 of those springy doorstops to the lid. Lots of fun. I even put a transducer on it so I can plug it into a guitar amp or something.
@cordova5029 Yep. When I was a toddler, I would hit the doorstop near our front door, and it would freak me out. So my mom started calling it a friendly doorstop, and it just kind of stuck. Other doorstops that are not springy are not friendly.

I set up a new laptop a few days ago, Huawei MateBook D14. So much bloat! so much!
MS office 15 and 16, bunch of the usual bs windows apps and yes, onedrive.
Even after uninstalling though, I noticed a rogue onedrive folder hanging around like a bad smell in my user folder. This pissed me off, so I deleted it...
Little did I know it would delete my desktop icons I'd just painstakingly setup though.
I had to reboot to even get access to the desktop again, it would error out if I for example, did Windows+E, Backspace as usual. Anyway I noticed that folder coming back so I was like, nah. Not having it.
Had to find a way to solve it. Eradicate the bloody thing from my system, so I did.

Here's what the readme says about it:
Onedrive Fixes
This script removes OneDrive from a Windows user profile and moves the standard folders back where they normally belong.
It is intended for cases where OneDrive has redirected Desktop, Documents, or Pictures to a path such as:
C:\Users\YourName\OneDrive\Desktop
What It Does
• Backs up the affected registry keys to this folder.
• Moves Desktop, Documents, and Pictures out of OneDrive and back to the normal user folders.
• Updates the Windows known-folder registry paths.
• Removes OneDrive startup entries.
• Disables OneDrive sync policy.
• Hides OneDrive from Explorer where possible.
• Removes OneDrive scheduled tasks where possible.
• Runs the normal OneDrive uninstallers.
• Deletes the leftover OneDrive folder after moving the known folders back.
• Restarts Explorer so the folder changes take effect.
How To Use
Right-click this file and choose Run as administrator:
Onedrive Fixes.cmd
The script writes .reg backups and a .log file beside itself in this folder.
After it finishes, reboot the computer and confirm Desktop, Documents, and Pictures are in the normal user profile folders.

Out of curiosity, did you sign into a Microsoft account when you set it up, or did you use one of the tricks to create a local account? I'm wondering if the laptop had a factory install of Windows with the desktop/documents folders already mapped to Onedrive, or whether Microsoft is automatically enabling that setting after you sign in.

I think that's correct, it's been a while since I made this recording. Basicly the gist is, choose your world, choose scale and key, click genorate. It'll genorate a random latin sounding name too! It's based off of "syngen" an engine coded in js by this person named shift backtik. Would definitely recommend finding out more. Hello, new release of music separator is up. Models have been reorganized, in categories and now they appear in a tree view. You can now search for models aswell. Auto-updater is also available, it'll work starting from v1.5.

I can tell you that it is dumping a models folder in my applications folder on Mac at the very least, haven't tried the new version yet.
@mew Ok. If you don't want extra folders in the apps folder create a music separator folder in there and place the .app file in that folder.

New version of FM-DX servers Lister 0.3 awailable.
I think that's the biggest update.
Added:
Previously overlooked context menu in search results;
Information about coordinates (Lat, Lon) in the server details panel;
New option in the Context menu, which allows you to check the approximate location based on coordinates provided by the server owner;
Option to hide locked and unreachable servers;
Support for RT1 display in the server status, because FM-DX Servers provide it. Sorry for overlooking it previously.
Fixed:
Bug that caused status checks to fail for some servers with URLs ending in a trailing slash (/);
No more Window flashing while loading the status of the selected server or search;
No more "RDS" prefix before RDS fields. Now it's just "PS", "PTY", etc.

Bat Outta Hell is now playable on mobile. Not gonna say it's perfect, but the start is there. It supports tilt steering. It calibrates after a short countdown when you hit start game if tilt steering is on / available. On iOS, this requires accepting a permission. Touch gestures available if you don't wanna use the tilt steering. I probably need to run through the how to play section and do some updating, but controls are:
Swipe up / down: Throttle
Flick left and right (when tilt steering is off or unavailable): steer
Two finger single tap: Activate power-up
3 finger single tap: Pause / unpause
Two finger up / down / left / right: Announce various bits of info
These work on most of the playable area, but two vertical strips on the left and right are dedicated to the horn / horn ball.
On iOS and Android, touch controls are unavailable unless screen reader is off. Thus, there's a use TTS checkbox in options. On iOS, every time the TTS fires, it significantly ducks audio. This is far from idea, but completely out of my hands. I would therefore recommend becoming familiar with the game / sounds on PC or Mac, then turning off the automatic speech announcements on mobile once you know the sounds well enough. This will still let you use the two finger swipes to get info.

interesting game! I am playing it on windows, and the only problem at least for me is trying to hold down the up arrow isn't really making me go fast at all. I think I get up to 16MPH, but it takes me forever to get up to that speed. I did manage to get a rocket or two, and was able to get up to I think maybe 150MPH, but when it ran out, I was back down to 16MPH. am I doing something wrong?
@JamminJerry Are you on Jaws? The idea is that you don't need to hold the arrows. They work like a throttle, Hold only as long as you need to reach the speed you'd like to be at, then release, and it keeps it. But Jaws won't let arrow keys pass through to the game properly.

I was moving so slow that I never hit anything. unless I did in rocket mode. I can record audio for you if you would like so that you can hear what I hear. I can either do it from my zoom H2Essential recorder, or record directly threw my mixer board.
@JamminJerry I don't think it'll tell me much honestly. IF you continue to tap the arrows, does your speed increase beyond 16mph?
not really. I think only one time I got above 16, I think maybe 18MPH, but it takes for ever for me to get that fast. I will keep trying to play with it to see if I can figure out what might be going on, but just thought I would let you know I had these issues.

I like it, I just can't figure out what the horn ball powerups are for. also, is there any way to get above 100mph? and it's too bad you can't get wrenches in reserve for when your car gets beat up, traveling at ridiculously low speeds until you can collect wrenches is annoying. rofl
@cary5871 They let you shoot obstacles, or really most things. It's kind of stupid, but a long time ago, like late '90s, there was this game called Viper Racing, and there was a cheat that let you shoot these balls out of the front of your car by blowing the horn, when they hit another car, it would cause them to spin out. So I kinda took that idea and added it to this.

Okay, this is something I'd love to play with but can't as I don't have the required GPU. I wish someone would create some sort of time shared AI service sort of like timesharing mainframes in the 70's where you rent time on a computer with a big GPU, send it the work to be done,and get the results back, and you're billed for what you actually use.

Updated mine and @arfy's SendTo with latest encoders and now a quick and easy cmd installer that puts all the encoders in-place for you, along with the send to shortcuts, also adds it to your path so you don't have to.

I'd personally remove the del commands particularly in the YouTube DL scripts. completely user error but I had ydln in my path, and ran it in the wrong folder, resulting it deleting everygning following *.f???.* in my user folder.
Luckily no damage was done but it went and did what it said very efficiently.

Regarding development tools and data, it's interesting to me that some of us have spent years with certain things being inaccessible or difficult for us to access; e.g. charts, cluttered reports with weird and wonderfully inaccessible web interfaces, other complex visual representations of important data. But now, all of a sudden, people are making APIs and tools (often command line tools) to retrieve that data with the primary goal of making it more digestible by LLMs, yet those tools even by themselves just make the information so much more accessible. I feel kinda conflicted about this. On one hand, it's great that it's more accessible to me now. On the other hand, it's weird to feel that our struggles never really mattered enough for anyone to solve them, but now that we have LLMs, we suddenly have this urgent need to make information more easily accessible and digestible and folks are willing to put work into that.

I'm surprised, if I may respectfully say so, that this is new to you. The major problem in accessibility, at least since 2010, is not lack of knowledge, not lack of capability, not lack of software, but lack of anyone who had the money and gives a damn. Our struggles are of no importance or value as blind people. The only way to make those struggles of value is through the law, and the law has serious dental problems. @ZBennoui

@ZBennoui I get it. To be fair, I've always had that issue. A tiny amount of money is more important than I am. A slight esthetic upgrade is more important. A blind person is not worth inconveniencing anyone else, even for a moment. Again, that's been the case since at least 2010.

@saschacowley @ZBennoui because, before then, and I'm being very loose with the date, there might have been an argument that people didn't know about accessibility, thought Blind people didn't use computers, they had people to do things for them, they could use the older methods... things like that. In 2009, those sort of statements might have drawn an eye-roll. After 2010 and, as I said, there's nothing magical about that date, it just became really obvious, that sort of argument/statement was just funny, it had no connection to reality.

Great point, also directly ties into features like computer use. In Open AI's implementation for example, they're utilizing the accessibility APIs on Mac OS to give GPT an easier time of learning an app's interface, but if those aren't implemented, it resorts to taking screenshots and clicking coordinates. Will more apps be made accessible simply because LLMs will be able to use them? I'm by no means an AI hater, but this doesn't feel right to me.
I feel conditioned to wonder when the scales will tip against us again. E.g. overly verbose abuse of accessibility APIs to make LLMs happy.
I learned pretty quickly when contracting, that nobody wanted to pay for "accesibility" work, so I have always made them pay in spades for "search engine optimization" work, which is essentially just accesibility work. The thing with AI is just the latest version of that. People really suck.

Sounds pretty standard to me honestly. Nothing ever gets easy for us until it's useful to someone else and life gets more accessible for us essentially by accident. see eBooks, audio books, even text to speech now that people want devices that can talk to them.

Meaning Re: our struggles having not mattered. Not trying to come off as like edgy or whatever but I have long felt that accessibility runs into the empathy trap where there is you, and there is other ppeople, we are permanently in the otherd category, and people by and large make things for the them croud. I see a lot of, "Accessibility is just good UX!" or "Accessible code is clean code!" Which, while true, is not the purpose, and would not be a thing that would need to be said if doing accessibility for its own sake were enough on its own.
Anyway, this all came off way more negative than intended. I am enjoying the resurgence of commandlines and json formatting and taking the W's where possible.
@prism There's something to be said for meeting people where they are and giving them extra carrots that happen to benefit them in order to incentivise doing the right thing. But yeah, to some extent, you're right that if they really cared, that wouldn't be necessary.
@prism It's not just us though, it's everybody. The exact same thing is happening to docs, onboarding, dev-ops and such. Many companies where John on Slack was the docs, until John left and then nobody knew anything, are getting real, dev docs checked into git. LLMs just force you into good practices a lot more than humans do.

I just added an option to App2Clap to capture the first process matching the filter when reloaded. For example, if you type nvda.exe into the filter and check the "Capture first matching process when reloaded" check box, when the plug-in reloads (e.g. opening a saved project or FX chain), it will search for the first process named nvda.exe and automatically capture it. Even if you don't use this check box, the filter and radio button states are saved to make restoring common configurations faster. app2clap.jantrid.net/

@Scott Yeah, that was my thinking too. I have this annoying setup where I want to use one pair of headphones for mixing and another (much crappier but less isolating) pair for recording vocals. I have two headphone outputs, but NVDA only comes out the first one and there's no way for me to change that with my particular interface. I can just unplug and replug, but that's annoying and I'm lazy, so it'd be much nicer if I could just fire up a quick App2Clap template to capture NVDA and shove it out the second output. More than you wanted to know, but there you go.

I didn't know that you could update ffmpeg for reaper. I thought it only worked with a particular version.
@acerbt REAPER 7.66 introduced support for FFMpeg up to version 8, including hardware encoding/decoding support and multi track audio for videos.

Antwort auf meine Frage: Ja, es kommt damit klar. Wie cool ist das bitte? In einem Rutsch alles aktualisiert, und beim Start werde ich nicht gefragt, ob REAPER wirklich geöffnet werden soll. Eine Frage noch: Kann man Das Rabbit App Bundle für den Mac mit Sprach-Bundles für Deutsch und andere unterstützte Sprachen ergänzen? So nutzt VoiceOver beim Start nämlich immer eine englische Stimme und liest damit deutsche Texte vor, da nur ein englisches Sprach-Bundle im App Container ist.
@marcozehe Aha, das ist ein guter Hinweis, ja, das mache ich. Idch wusste nicht, dass das bei Mac separat angegeben werden muss.
Doch, anhand der vorhandenen sogenannten Lproj Bundles weiß der Mac, welche Sprachen unterstützt werden. Bei Rabbit ist es bis jetzt kein einziges, nur der Eintrag in die PLIST Datei, dass die Sprache Englisch ist. Und so wird eben auch deutscher Text auf englisch vorgelesen und das Apple und Applikations-Menü auf englisch gezeigt.
@marcozehe Ich hab es gefunden und eingebaut. Ich werde in Kürze eine Macos-Testversion verteilen, in der ich einige Mac-spezifische Sachen angefasst habe. Wenn du möchtest, kannst du es ja damit mal probieren.
Das mache ich sehr gerne. Das ist ein tolles Tool, das die Installation von REAPER und allem Zubehör wirklich erheblich vereinfacht. Lediglich das mit dem Open Me First Kommando klappt nicht so richtig, da will er nämlich dann dafür die Genehmigung über die Systemeinstellungen haben, das Ding zu öffnen. Sobald die erteilt ist, macht das Script seine Arbeit, aber einmal muss man definitiv was freigeben.
Tahoe zumindest blockiert auch solche heruntergeladenen Scripte, weil es nicht verifizieren kann, dass sie nichts kaputt machen. Ein Terminal mit entsprechenden Previlegien kann halt auch viel Schaden auf dem Mac anrichten. Apple ist da inzwischen recht strikt, wenn was keine Signatur hat.
@marcozehe Gute Frage, ich denke ja. Ich weiß nicht, ob es die ReaPack Registry auch automatisch aktualisiert. Bzw. habe ich es so gebaut, aber den Fall noch nicht getestet, also... versuch gern mal, und sag mir, ob es geklappt hat.

Hey Tony. Would you consider using universal binary for Mac OS rather than separate architecture-based binaries? I think the naming may be super-confusing for beginners in the “assets” section. I ran the "open me first” and, even though it claimed the removal of “gatekeeper" restrictions, they were actually not removed for me. I am on Mac OS 26.4.1.
@vick21 Yeah, I've heard that it doesn't work for some people. I'll look into it, although it'll be just hit or miss since I can't test it myself.

@vick21 I got it installed, bypassed gate keeper, but it couldn't update SWS. I tried to select all from the Details and copy to clipboard and it crashed, unless it took CMD+C as Close. I'm not sure whether it succeeded in updating anything or not. Will try again, just wanted to let you know.
@FreakyFwoof @vick21 Ctrl + C might be the close shortcut, oops. There should be a logs within your REAPER resource path, RABBIT/logs/, there should be a json and a txt file. Those would be useful for debugging.
@vick21 Yep, you made CMD+C close. I tested this by pressing CMD+I to install, and it moved onto that step.
@FreakyFwoof I realized that to bypass the gatekeeper the app had to remind in the same folder where the "open me first” was located. The minute I moved it into the “Applications" folder, the protection got enabled again.

@vick21 Not in my case, though I'm on a better OS. Sequoia. I ran the script from temp, then moved app to proper place and ran it. No complaints.

@FreakyFwoof I am still not able to update. Also, a few things: I am using dev snapshots (unknown release date) for both OSARA and ReaKontrol. Rabbit said “won't update” in the case of ReaKontrol but “Will update" in the case of OSARA.

@vick21 @FreakyFwoof ReaKontrol has no version information in the library files themselves, which is why it doesn't recommend you to update. OSARA however has, which might be why it recommends you to update. If possible, try to send me the setup-unix-<timestamp>.txt file of the latest, erroring run from your REAPER resource path/RABBIT/logs for diagnosis. Thank you.

Worked beautifully on Mac here, though in my case all it did was update OSARA and install Reakontrol which I meant to do for ages so can't comment on SWS or reapack. It did detect them and added your reapack repo no problem though.

@fubsepude FWIW I ended up having to actually unblock the open me first that is meant to remove the attributes from the app bundle... So I suppose in the end it would have been the same if I had ran the .app itself.

@xogium @fubsepude From what Andre says, it seems like Mac has become really paranoid about such things. Looks like, unless I will pay hundred bucks every year to properly sign my app, that is what you'll have to do once when you download the app. Updates will later remember the unlocked gatekeeper though.
@fubsepude Right, that is no problem with me. Just thought I'd point this out. Maybe the best path forwards then is to mention this in the readme, given the open me first script doesn't quite seem to work as painlessly as you hoped it would? Just a thought.
Seems there would be no point keeping this in the repo if you have to pick between unblocking this or the app bundle itself.
Mac might be a bit on the annoying side with this, but at least it's not like that horrible crap of windows defender always removing things from your machine without your say so. I’ll take mac gatekeeper over this every single day.

I'm having a bit of an issue with Rabbit on my mac.
SWS, reapack, and reacontrol don't show up in my reaper extensions menu, due to the fact that rabbit installs the x64 versions on my computer, but my computers are both apple cilikon.
Is there any way to fix this in a later version?
You could add the ability in rabbit for the user to choose which versions of these components they want/need.

What do you do when apps like 'FanControl' or 'MSI Afterburner' are inaccessible?
Well if you're a really smart person and can program, you create an accessible version for yourself.
If you're not, and you're like me, you spend a lot of time with Codex (in my case) getting one built.
I've tested this on two machines and it worked very well and I'm pleased with how it came out. I have done as much rigorous testing as I can manage here, so I hope it will work for you, should you care to test it yourself.

Sensor Readout is a Windows utility for reading hardware sensors and controlling supported fans with a keyboard-first, screen-reader-friendly interface.
It shows high-level categories on the left, readings grouped by device in a tree view on the right, and common commands in a standard menu bar.
What It Does
Permalink: What It Does
• Reads temperatures, fan RPM, storage health, storage capacity, and selected hardware counters.
• Shows a Performance category for CPU usage, memory usage, and storage read/write activity.
• Uses bundled LibreHardwareMonitor libraries for sensor access.
• Uses the PawnIO driver for low-level motherboard sensors and fan controls where hardware support is available.
• Lets you label fan headers with friendly names.
• Hides stopped or unpopulated motherboard fan headers by default.
• Applies manual fan percentages to one selected fan or to all visible fans.
• Returns one fan or all fans to automatic/default control.
• Saves TXT or HTML sensor reports.

Nice work on this utility. I enjoyed looking through all the categories on my laptop. It's very cool how you can just select CPU temps and it will read them as the state changes. I used to use another app, aida64, to get this info, this version is faster on my machine and naturally, works very well with NVDA.

Not my call. Being a non-programmer, that's the one thing I left to chance. I explained in great detail what I wanted, it picked the language and on my win11 system, found a built-in compiler and used that. Didn't make me install anything new, so maybe that's why.

Hi. I was able to get Claude to write a plugin for Sensor Output for Asus that can read and set fan speeds. I haven't played with fan curves yet, since honestly I don't know what I'm doing as far as that goes. Results are promising though.

there is definitely something up with Windows 11 and the way it opens processes. Your updater ran 3 times faster on a windows 10 laptop with 8 cores than a 24 core desktop. This is not your fault at all to be clear, I've noticed this across the board on 11.

@mhussain Don't want one. That's precisely the thing I don't want, so it remains portable and you can run it from anywhere. Make your own desktop shortcut, or tell it to add to startup. I can see why some would, but I just don't like the idea. I never have. The more apps that stay portable, and stop leaving their smelly registry residue all over your system, the better and faster windows would run.

I've just put out a new build of Fastwin, my small Windows utility to apply various registry tweaks to make your system run better. This version adds new options for things such as explorer customization, allowing you to get rid of the new right click context menu in Windows 11, turning off Bing in the start menu, etc. and also now allows you to toggle settings between states instead of just setting them in one state. For example, now I can turn back on bing in the start menu, if I ever want to do that for some reason. keeping this one in the useful toolbox - at this point all these tweaks are applied on my system but this will be most useful if getting a new machine and wanting a lot of that off super fast, so I'm genuinely glad you created this.

@Tamasg Exactly this. None of these changes are ones I need now, but they are ones I have no idea how I originally applied or that I would very much not want to do again. It's a beautiful setup companion.
the window just says Select an option: with nothing else that I see with nvda and arrowing down. am I missing something?
@ginsenshi Read up with the review cursor, NVDA+up arrow if in laptop layout, numpad 7 if in desktop.
Oh my gosh I am trying this on a few new machines I am setting up and it is amazing! I'd 100% purchase this if it was able to work with a bunch of settings blind individuals mostly turn off/on with a new machine, camera/mic for some things, animations ETC. I know a lot of that is personal preference though.
@jpellis2008 I wonder how many of the things that scripts like win11 debloater, and removeWindowsAI could be implimented into this. grins.
Question. Is this supposed to fill the same role as Winaero tweaker, but less clunky to use?

ExplorerPatcher, OpenShell, and Win11Debloat are my go-to tools.
Open-Shell gives you a very snappy start menu reminiscent of Windows 7, including the ability to hit tab and junk to your home folder. 0 web components, uses the Windows search index.
ExplorerPatcher gives you a quick way to change some Explorer settings, some of which can't be done as simple registry tweaks. Mine brings back the menu bar, takes a lot of junk out of the desktop/taskbar shell, and gives me old XP-style listviews. Keyboard navigation in the properties dialog is 100% fudged and a little weird; left/right arrow switches tabs and the space bar interacts with lists/comboboxes.
Win11Debloat uninstalls a whole bunch of apps, gets rid of many AI/telemetry/etc. and also gives you a quick way to turn on some common settings like file extensions in Explorer.
Two of these are in WinGet:
winget install open-shell valinet.explorerpatcher
For win11debloat, type this in a powershell. Note that this downloads a script off the internet and runs it without confirmation, so the usual "don't run things you don't trust" applies. You can presumably just access this URL and feed it to Claude.

I need to give the Windows 11 task manager a chance, but in case you do give it a chance and hate it, there's a version of the Windows 7 task manager floating around with an installer that replaces the built-in one.
Lastly, I turn off the lock screen, which makes Windows go straight to the logon screen instead:

in reply to Liam Erven • • •If you have done absolutely nothing with the laptop yet, and you want to stop Windows from forcing you to sign into a Microsoft account, you can press shift+f10 from the out-of-box screen to open a command prompt, and type this:
start ms-cxh:localonly
This brings up the old "Who's going to use this PC" screen and when you're done, it pretty much immediately signs you in. It skips over a lot of the introductory setup if you didn't already do it, which is mostly a good thing. Just check your privacy settings since you don't get to manually approve or reject them.
If you want to do a complete Windows reinstall, you can use the same shift+f10 shortcut and directly launch d:\setup.exe, instead of going through setup or fiddling with boot menus.
You probably don't need to do that on a Lenovo; I have the same laptop from a few generations ago, and I have never reinstalled Windows. It's pretty clean apart from Lenovo vantage.
