All the countless hours spent on the :linux: #Linux Desktop Migration Tool are finally paying off! My wife got a new laptop yesterday. I installed :fedora: #Fedora #Silverblue on it, created a user account, connected it to the home network, and left the migration tool running overnight. She could start using the new laptop without any interruption in the morning, and the whole thing took like 15 minutes of my time.

There are so many great candidates running this year! I'm especially excited about my friend Debarshi, who's running for FESCo and wants to help us make Fedora #Silverblue :silverblue: the default implementation of the Workstation edition. communityblog.fedoraproject.or…

I had a talk called "Unbreakable Linux for Entire Family" today. It had nothing to do with Oracle #Linux, it was about concepts and approaches around #Fedora #Silverblue to make a truly free ChromeOS-like system for friends and family.
I was happy to have a full room of people. It's good to see #OpenAlt bouncing back in terms of attendance.

The recording of the talk (in Czech) is already available online:

Two Silverblue systems here got hit by the secure boot signature bootloader bug on the upgrade that brought in a new kernel. Good thing there are rollbacks (to boot an older version) and a workaround.

Issue: github.com/fedora-silverblue/i…

Workaround to keep using secure boot (run these commands on a working boot): github.com/fedora-silverblue/i…

Hopefully there's an automatic fix soon? ('bootupd' should be the long term fix for this.)

So remember how I was saying you shouldn’t have to know or care if your operating system is immutable for an immutable operating system to be usable by everyday folks? (You know, clever folks, like brain surgeons and astronauts, not just your regular garden variety tech hobbyist with time to spare following instructions from a wiki.)

Seems others think so too… #VanillaOS sounds very promising. #Fedora #Silverblue folks should take some notes.

So this is one of the coolest things about Fedora Silverblue (apart from the excellent stability, speed, and gorgeous stock GNOME 42): the first entry you see is today’s operating system. The second one is yesterday’s. If I wanted to, I could revert to the latter with a single command.

Is it just me or can’t Fedora Silverblue install Flatpaks downloaded from the web (flatpakref) in GNOME Software?

(This is a valid, decentralised way of distributing software that doesn’t require centralised services like Flathub, etc. and should be supported as a first-class citizen in free and open operating systems.)

Tip: if you’re using the new GNOME Console and Fish shell, you don’t have to wait until the GNOME folks have colour schemes implemented if you want to customise yours.

fisher install FabioAntunes/base16-fish-shell

Then, in your console, type base16<tab> to see the list of different colour schemes you can try.
