Make no mistake. This is a USA automaker and oil company hit job on the independence and sovereignty of the Canadian economy.
They are trying to reverse the inevitable so they can continue their own businesses as usual for as long as possible.
It can't be allowed to happen. Canada is already lagging far behind other nations. Our Economy and our Society and our burning forests, will suffer if our government gives in to this pressure.
As a cyclist of 15 years... it pains me to admit we're kinda car dependent for a bit.
My knees aren't what they used to be and worse covid isn't over.
In a world without covid, I'd be love to take our tiny human on the bus and train, but it's pretty much impossible to get a 8 month to wear a mask and its even more challenging to keep unmasked strangers out of their adorable lil face.

Urgent mutual aid:
Alright insurance is only paying out about half the purchase price of another equivalent 15+ year old vehicle.
Which is quite a bind right now as my partner is also just finding out that the contract they lined up probably isn't panning out.
So we were already pretty highly rent burdened and now we're trying to recover from our car being in an accident.

If the insurance run around weren't bad enough, I just found out that if the guys insurance pays out a settlement beyond basic medical costs due to owing child-support I would never see any settlement cash.
Unclear what happens to the value of the vehicle, but thankfully the car was still in a family friends name and hadn't been transfer to my partner and I yet. So hopefully I don't need to get a family lawyer for that part.
So the bad news is the car didn't survive my plan to get an early start at the hacker space, but the good news is I did 😤
SR99 got a good one today, I just replaced the front suspension myself this fall 😭 Thankfully the crash wasn't my fault, I don't have any graphic injuries and insurance will help some but this is a setback for sure.
If you're able to pitch in I'd appreciate a little love

Some fascinating research out on hacking a Subaru via STARLINK connected vehicle service.
"On November 20, 2024, Shubham Shah and I discovered a security vulnerability in Subaru’s STARLINK connected vehicle service that gave us unrestricted targeted access to all vehicles and customer accounts in the United States, Canada, and Japan.
Using the access provided by the vulnerability, an attacker who only knew the victim’s last name and ZIP code, email address, phone number, or license plate could have done the following:
Remotely start, stop, lock, unlock, and retrieve the current location of any vehicle.
Retrieve any vehicle’s complete location history from the past year, accurate to within 5 meters and updated each time the engine starts.
Query and retrieve the personally identifiable information (PII) of any customer, including emergency contacts, authorized users, physical address, billing information (e.g., last 4 digits of credit card, excluding full card number), and vehicle PIN.
Access miscellaneous user data including support call history, previous owners, odometer reading, sales history, and more.
After reporting the vulnerability, the affected system was patched within 24 hours and never exploited maliciously."

In Vox, I noted that smoking a cigarette similar to driving a giant SUV or pickup: Both endanger anyone who happens to be nearby.
The narrative power of secondhand smoke galvanized the anti-tobacco movement of the 1980s. It could do the same with car bloat today.

Gigantic SUVs are a public health threat. Why don’t we treat them like one?
The same policy arguments that turned the public against smoking cigarettes could help to combat “car bloat” as pedestrian deaths climb.David Zipper (Vox)
"Tesla's vehicles have the highest fatal accident rate among all car brands in America, according to a recent study that analyzed data from the U.S. Fatality Analysis Reporting System."
Tesla's fatality rate is double the national average. Driver behavior is a contributing factor to the high number of deaths (i.e. shitty-driving assholes are more likely to buy Teslas and die or kill someone else while driving them).
Teslas are surveillance on wheels. Bay Area police increasingly check to see if there was a Tesla in the vicinity of a crime so they can get access to the footage from its cameras.
If you see a Tesla, it’s probably filming you — and more automakers are doing it too.

It really says something about the USA that a miniature kei car is "too dangerous" for public roads, but a lifted 8,000-lb pickup is just fine.

The cities we admire made better choices regarding cars, and are still making them today.
Better choices instead of excuses.
“Fun fact: SIM City was forced to pretend that all parking lots were underground because the game would be really boring if it was proportional in terms of parking lots.”

7 years ago, while trying to get approval to operate in cities all over the world, #Uber insisted that it would actually reduce traffic. Instead, Uber drivers cruise without passengers 40% of the time. Uber & Lyft no longer claim they reduce traffic, & now admit they actually increase congestion.
So much for “making cities better.”

This actually isn’t surprising at all, but it still needs to said over & over — the biggest barrier to more urban biking in cities is the fear of cars.

Mercedes Puts Faster Acceleration Behind A Subscription Paywall
Back in July, BMW raised a bit of a ruckus when the company announced that it would be making heated seats a luxury option for an additional $18 per month. Now, Mercedes aims to take the concept on…Techdirt
And they feel entitled and justified to every single space available. Given a chance, anything becomes a parking spot.
And if you dare speak up about it or oppose it, #motorists respond immediately with aggression, violent threats, racism and sometimes actual violence.
Don't dare advocate for a cycle lane, some space in the footpath for a wheelchair user, or a stroller.
Car Brain is the reason why #jaywalking even exists as a concept. Car Brain is a group project that the automobile industry has been working on for decades, and they have successfully installed it in most of us.
I love it because it suddenly questions our assumptions of how normal it is to move about our cities, and it also highlights how wasteful and inefficient #cars are.
Our cities can be very quiet and clean if we move in our feet, or bikes or scooters.
Cars are noisy dangerous and dirty. We should make cities where we need to use them as little as possible.
