#accessibility question: how well does thorn (þ) work with screen readers?
I want to start using it on my blog, but I also don't want to give screen readers a stroke
On Gendering, Ungendering, and (Mis)Perceiving Trans People." In this long-read, I unpack the phenomenon of so-called #transvestigation, explain why & how it happens, plus explore more mundane (yet nevertheless fucked up) ways in which we perceive and interpret gender and sexual minorities. No-paywall link, please give it lots of "claps" & share widely!

I published a new report that shows how today's cybersecurity and risk profiling systems are turning into employee mass surveillance and predictive policing tools.
Based on log, device and network data,
they let companies monitor almost everything employees do or say.
We need a serious debate about what is necessary and proportionate for what purpose and about safeguards that prevent misuse.

what are some problems you've run into in the terminal with folders? so far I have:
* accidentally putting 1 million files in a folder, so it's impossible / very slow to list
* you deleted a folder while you're still in it in the terminal, and everything gets weird
* something about symlinks (what?)
what am I missing? (only problems related to folders please!)
Today, Jehovah's Witness.
Definitely, definitely no thank you.
Europe generally, most people will open doors here when the doorbell rings.
We have a lot of intercoms though, and tose help. Especially in apartment complexes, which Europe has plenty of, you can't really live without one.
I haven't reminded people in a while. I really recommend that people regularly download all their CSV files on their Mastodon profile in case their instance goes down (see the screenshot).
This is particularly suggested to everyone on an instance (especially big ones) for which the admin isn't transparent with finances and backup plans.
Better have a backup of your follows than suddenly losing everything!
Go to Preferences => Import/Export => Data Export => Download all CSV files you're interested in keeping

Somehow I thought Blender would had initially a lot of Dutch, but it looks pretty clean on that front on a quick glance, apart from few comments here and there (22 years ago!).
Nassau County, NY, population of 1.5 mil, has banned masks with a vote of 12 to 0 with 7 councilors abstaining
Masked advocates for masking were cut off from speaking, & one was arrested on false charges.
The police surrounded masked speakers, intimidating them.
White supremacists in the audience wore 1776 shirts, MAGA caps, & waved an Israeli flag. They recorded everyone masked & were allowed to go over their allotted time as they issued threats.
The connections between eugenics, white supremacy, indigenous struggle, and the abject failures of the so-called left to meaningfully resist could not have been more clear.
Every single one of y'all who are silent on COVID and/or refuse to mask are complicit in the fascist gains happening now & the deaths of the poor & disabled from COVID since the so-called left joined the Nazis on refusing to mask.

We asked 1,000+ attendees to mask indoors this weekend, and everyone just did. I didn’t have to stop and remind a single person the entire 3 days.
There were definitely gaps in the policy, the risk wasn’t reduced to zero, but if anyone is wondering if it’s possible for events and large gatherings to make reasonable accommodations to reduce the risk of spreading COVID, it absolutely is, we proved it, and your event should be doing it too.
Holy cow, #Transitous-based #publictransit routing has just landed in the nightly version of #GNOMEMaps, and therefore the number of cities you can get transit directions in… has gone waaaay up! It can even route through a mess like Los Angeles' multiple transit authorities, or calculate long-distance trains!
Big props to @mlundblad for implementing this: gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-m…
One really cool thing about #Tusky: you get the option to open a post with your other account (s)! Very convenient thank you 👍🙏
In what universe does anyone want to install an app to control a fan? It's A FAN!
*Grumble* at least the stupid thing was only like $40 ... Roughly the same price as all the manual fans...

On my second one, "Bile", I tried to add emphasis to "you was mean to me" using the "em" tag. It doesn't seem to do anything for the screen reader I was using, though. theawkwardyeti.com/comic/bile/

What an absolutely fantastic headline!
If you didn't know the company was called 'Nothing', you might think someone is complaining that absolutely no part of their new earbuds works as expected!

in reply to Mahid Sheikh • • •Not a good idea. When using Narrator, or NVDA with the Windows OneCore text-to-speech engine, it acts like the thorn isn't there. When using NVDA with eSpeak NG, it pronounces the thorn as "th", but mispronounces some words, e.g. þeory.
Too lazy to switch to my Mac and check with VoiceOver right now.
