Absolutely devastated at the news about Timothy West. What a truly great actor. I feel awful for Prunella Scales and for Samuel adn Joe. I only brush fingers with them on X, but they seem like friends to me. RIP Timothy, may God's best angels keep you well.
in reply to Sean Randall

@cachondo I wish I'd seen him live, I've heard him on the radio countless times, and absolutely loved the work he did, uploading poetry during Lockdown. Timothy West used to read poems there sometimes. My heart breaks for them all.
in reply to Lulu Hartgen

The lockdown poetry was wonderful. Really brightened up my time in front of a screen.

I've been thinking a lot about bakcground audio in apps lately.
As an experiment today, I tried a gentle rainfall sound in my earphones with more thunder the further down my inbox I was. So as messages came in and I didn't move up to read them, more and more thunder worked its way into the ambient mix.

I'll keep doing it on-and-off and check the metrics of my Inbox usage with and without to see any impact.

in reply to James Scholes

@jscholes I was sort of aiming for a, ignore your emails and the storm will descend, perhaps eventually eclipsing your screen reader, sort of motif.

To end a call in Teams you can press CTRL+shift+h. H for hang up. Sensible.

To start a voice or video call in slack, you can press CTRL+shift+h. H for huddle. Sensible, sort of.

if you try to hang up in Teams after someone else has done so, you might end up unintentionally huddling in Slack. Not sensible.

in reply to Justin Macleod

@JustinMac84 I've not had any of those issues I'm afraid, although the interface generally feels uncomfortable in lots of spots.
Which screen reader are you running with?

I wonder if there's a difference for home and workplace use? I know they used to have a classic and new Teams, as well as a personal and business one...

in reply to Sean Randall

NVDA. Pretty sure I'm using the personal one. I just wish Zoom still worked.

Love being beholden to a kernel that has such bad development and integration practices that just upgrading between versions can result in the inability to suspend and resume because of a WiFi and/or Bluetooth driver regression that nobody caught during development
in reply to Emmanuele Bassi

huh, maybe thats why it stopped working for me at some point...
in reply to Lorenz

@lw64 it’s a known 6.11 regression; going back to 6.10 “fixes” it

Actually... Does anyone know how often the #JAWS and #NVDA certifications should be retaken in order to be considered current? #accessibility #blind #SR #credentials
in reply to NV Access

@NVAccess Right now I primarily care about it as a resume bullet if I wind up needing to find a new job. That's why I'm trying to understand how long someone is considered officially certified before they need to retake the test. Also, is NV Access considering any sort of certification maintenance program short of just retaking the entire exam?
in reply to Darrell Hilliker 👨‍🦯♾️📡

So far what we have done is updated the exam every few years - and we give people a 50% discount for purchasing the later version of the exam. But we're always open to feedback on if people think it would work better another way.

A few weeks ago, I sent my 1985 Swiss Army Knife back to Victorinox for a broken blade replacement.

It came back today, fully repaired, cleaned, polished, lubricated and in a new box.

Total cost: £10 + return postage.

They sent the knife back with an invoice. I didn't have to pay a penny before the job was done.

A product that's been out of production for almost 40 years, repaired at very little cost by the original manufacturer.

I'm stunned. Happy, impressed, grateful and stunned.

New app added to the Accessible Android apps directory foobar2000 accessible accessibleandroid.com/app/foob…

it's been 9 months since I started my new job. my most used keystrokes are now
alt+shift+up or down to move to an unread slack channel,
CTRL+shift+4 in slack to see what I've marked for later
And ctrl+. in outlook to see when my next appointment is.

it's very different to teaching, working in digital accessibility. I miss the students coming through my door with problems technological and questions most personal, and the colleagues happy to learn new things and see just how capable blindness can make someone.

But I am part of a solid, supportive team, have a wonderful manager who interacts with me more than once a half term and company leadership seem to care about accessibility. all good wins.

in reply to Raul

En principio si se hace por el buzón anónimo no se debería de saber. Si se pone denuncia a inspección sí que se puede llegar a saber.

Hey @Tutanota , just filled your questionnaire. At the end I'm being asked to rate your app on GooglePlay. I give it 10 stars, but I won't install Google on my degoogled phone just to rate your app. I like it also because it's #FOSS and available on #fdroid
in reply to Wanderer

Sure thing, we use the F-Droid app as well. 😎 💪

Thank you!

hey #JFW? when the computer reboots to install windows updates, how many times do you need to tell me "100 percent, you are almost there. don't turn off your computer? 10 times? are you sure, because I don't think I got the point after the first three times.

Things I noticed that are different between #bluesky and #mastodon

Blue sky: hey this person is here from #birdsite follow them now!

Mastodon: welcome here's the keys, you know about hashtags cause that's gonna be important for you

Blue sky: we got away welcome all our friends

Mastodon: oh cool, you're here

Blue sky: I am so unique!

Mastodon: we have sheepherders have you met them? There cool people

Was mir an #Thüringen gefällt?

Have any blind folks bought and used the TPLink LED strip? How accessible is the app for controlling it? What all can you do from a smart speaker in terms of controlling the lights? I'm very familiar with their smart plugs/switches, but have never used their LED strips. If that's not accessible, is there one that is? I'm considering all options for Christmas lights in my basement in our now permanent home. Please boost for reach. Thanks.

Are there any tools to turn a PDF into @libreoffice text document (with the text from it) on Linux ?

It really disheartens me to see think pieces and social media posts about asinine stuff like the Magic Mouse charging port or the Mac mini’s power button.

Everybody navel-gazing and playing wannabe designer.

Anything accessibility-related? It’s platitudes and GEE WHIZ all the way down.

New blog post: Make your own Personal Hub

re: exercise +
yeah, explosive exercises are hard to do safely with a dumbbell in each hand. Resistance bands are best, but two-handed grips on a free weight also work. I would hold a heavy bag with both hands and wear a backpack for jumping goblet squats, and I may have a chance to do them with a dumbbell tomorrow.

Hi. This is a really cool idea, and I'm glad it's out there, but it just didn't work for me. I didn't anticipate how tiny the keys are. They are about the size of pencil erasers. I didn't know that cited people would type with their thumbs on these types of things. Has anyone else who is blind ordered and used one of these? Just curious. Harkens back to the old Blackberry days, doesn't it? Isn't that the kind of keyboard those devices had?
