Well, it took about as long as expected, but now Toot! v17.4 is finally here!

toot.to/

This version mainly features one new addition: Support for Dynamic Type, meaning Toot! will now respect your font size settings in iOS.

This required quite a lot of reworking of internals, so this version is rolling out through a one-week phased release. If you don't absolutely want the dynamic text size, there's no rush to get it, so I recommend leaving it to install on schedule.

Thank you so much for another great release! For me, the change for multi-part toots is probably the most important. Thank you for that!

I look forward to the language-related features. AFAIK, you can set the language of an AccessibilityLabel, or its NSString, so you can make VoiceOver speak in the language of each toot, if VO supports it. This will be cool for us multilingual users.

@aussocialadmin Hi. Thanks for aus.social. :) I prefer to use Pinafore as my Mastodon client, but in the past few days, this broke with aus.social. Browser says:

Access to fetch at 'aus.social/api/v1/instance' from origin 'pinafore.social' has been blocked by CORS policy: The 'Access-Control-Allow-Origin' header contains multiple values '*, *', but only one is allowed. Have the server send the header with a valid value...

curl indeed shows two headers, but only one for other Mastodon instances:

$ curl -sLv -H 'Origin: pinafore.social' -o /dev/null aus.social/api/v1/instance 2>&1 | grep allow-origin
< access-control-allow-origin: *
< access-control-allow-origin: *

Is there any chance of a fix so I can use Pinafore again? Thanks for your time.

The accessibility for the blind advent calendar: day 15 - Austria
Welcome to Innsbruck, Austria again. This time we go to the main train station where I spent a part of my mobility training. Through this training I have learnt that there is a semi-independent way for blind passengers to operate the on-site ticket machine. How come semi, you might ask?
Well, on the front of the machine, there is a dedicated customer service number embossed in Braille where you can call and tell the representative where you would like to go. They are able to remotely operate the machine, find your connection, choose the right ticket options for you and bring you to the payment screen. Once the payment is complete, the ticket comes out as usual. Kind of makes me wonder: if the railway staff are able to access these machines remotely, why isn't this possibility open to those who might need it for accessibility reasons?
I am not sure whether this works in other Austrian cities, I haven't also heard of this implementation in any other place.
Unfortunately, I have never had a chance to use this so no recordings or first-hand experiences this time.

The accessibility for the blind advent calendar: day 15 - Austria
@vick21 Thank you, Victor! Lately, I have found it hard to motivate myself to write longer forms, the idea appears compelling at the beginning but the execution feels a bit like a chore. I'll think of a way to archive this somehow, though, seeing by the reactions that there is some interest around it.

Some people on here are really going around pretending to be Black people with avatars generated with thispersondoesnotexist.com to question lived experiences of racism from Black people & avoid having their white supremacy thrown back at them.

This is vile & not subtle and should be pointed out every single time it is noticed.

TIL: There is a cursed color in the Kodak ProPhoto RGB color space which, when converted to sRGB using pre-August-2020-Security-Update Android's image conversion routines, causes an integer overflow and a crash due to a rounding error. Some dude accidentally created an image (flickr.com/photos/gaurav_agraw…) which contains the cursed color on a single pixel. In 2020 if you set this image as your desktop on a Google or Samsung device, the device would brick & lose all onboard data youtube.com/watch?v=iXKvwPjCGn…

This is making me think about making an "irl-basilisks" Github repo containing the Excessively Loud Sunset, Janet Jackson's "Rhythm Nation" and a copy of the EICAR test file. Probably a bad idea because sometime in 2026 I'd wind up including "entirely innocuous image that incorrectly trips neural network CSAM scanners" and then I'd get banned from Github mastodon.social/@miah@hachyder…

This is like that Janet Jackson song with the same resonate frequency of some hard drives right? =)

arch linux kinda has to be your daily driver, if you only drive it every few weeks, something happens with the engine oil or something? something happens with pacman and the fuel injector gets clogged? and my god when that happens, you get that thing turning and it just rips itself apart, grinding noises, package conflicts, black smoke out the exhaust, and you gotta rebuild the whole thing. because you made a big mistake buddy. you gotta boot it up once per week and run the updates buddy

The amazing Georges Stavracas Neto has merged the code that adds a grid view to the default file selection dialog in GTK4, completing the work done by him, Matthias Clasen, and Corey Berla that ported the whole dialog away from the deprecated GtkTreeView widgets to the new GTK4 list widgets. In so doing, Georges closed a 18 years old bug: blog.gtk.org/2022/12/15/a-grid…

George's work will be available in GTK 4.10, next February/March.
