So, I've already made a GTK app to display live transcriptions. Really, it's already working, and uploaded on my GitHub, since a year ago? (Bruh, 2 years. Time flies.)

But I wasn't satisfied enough with the transcription quality. I was using a bad model.

But now we have wayyyy better models. So, as soon as I finish this exam session, I'll plug this new model/service and release the app on flathub.

@sonny Yes, but the whisper model, which I'm going to use, provides more accurate transcriptions. It's the current state of the art.

Also, I'd like my app to be more than a simple live-caption viewer.
It already has another mode, where the window becomes similar to a text editor. I'd like to add a speaker recognition feature, so that the app can transcribe a full conversation while showing who said what.

Most of the functionality is provided by whisper, I only need to provide a decent UI.

Having been through this process at work recently, it seems that a possible cause of problems could be #Thunderbird not being set up to allow cookies (which privacy conscious users naturally tend not to permit). It seems that some #OAuth2 login pages may need cookies to be allowed in order to work, so it is probably worth adding this to the support page as a suggestion to check this setting.

Maybe you should try Python, the next generation object-oriented scripting and prototyping language, with a *readable* syntax. Python has been used by hundreds of happy users all over the world during the past three years, and is now ready for prime time. Python is an interpreted language, and has the usual advantages of such languages, such as run-time checks (e.g. bounds checking), execution of dynamically generated code, automatic memory allocation, high level operations on strings, lists and dictionaries (associative arrays), and a fast edit-compile-run cycle. Additionally, it features modules, classes, exceptions, and dynamic linking of extensions written in C or C++. It has arbitrary precision integers. Python can be run interactively, and there is an extensive Emacs editing mode which includes the capability to execute regions of code. For the truly desperate there is a source level debugger (written in Python, of course :-). Python comes with a large library of standard modules and classes, as well as an extensive set of demo programs. It has interfaces to most Unix system calls and library functions, and there exist extensions that interface to window systems and graphics libraries like X and SGI's GL.

Hello nerds!

We recently updated our user manual to add a section on media uploads, including image descriptions and which bits of metadata (exif tags) are and aren't excised from media uploads.

We were reminded recently that while GoToSocial strips metadata reliably from image types, we don't yet strip metadata from videos. That means that if you have "location data" or "geotagging" enabled in the camera app of your device when you record a video, and you upload that video without re-encoding it or removing metadata tags from it in some other way, location data may be encoded into the video file, which presents a privacy issue.

Unlike corpo social media, many fedi implementations (to the best of our knowledge) remove sensitive metadata when they compress/reencode images/videos, or at least give you the option to configure your server to do so.

As such, the fact that GtS doesn't yet strip metadata from videos specifically will probably be a "gotcha" for some users coming from other fedi softwares. A warning about this has now been added to the docs, but we're putting the warning out here too so people are aware of the issue.

So, please be careful when uploading videos! If you haven't done so already, we recommend going to your device's camera app and turning off "location data" so that video clips do not have your coordinates added to them.

We will be adding this issue to the list of things to do before we leave alpha and enter beta, and we'll announce it here when we implement a fix.
