I do think and agree with the poster about the dehumanizing nature in which Apple did it (and they didn't discuss watermarking technology at all or how they will protect other's images getting doctored by you.) While I'm not against these tools from assisting users or helping in tasks, or immigrants writing better language, I'm against it when content can be generated with very little to no human input as to the final version.

This really is a crying shame. The ChatGPT stuff is AFAICT a bit of half-assed (and opt-in??) Siri integration, and in the meantime Apple has pulled off a bunch of engineering feats that (1) have zero to do with OpenAI and (2) work in exactly the privacy- and ethics-focused directions that OpenAI has failed to work.

Headline should be “Apple shunts OpenAI into the corner, chooses to roll their own”

The irony here is I’m not even particularly excited about any of the Apple Intelligence features I saw announced today. But I appreciate the privacy-first emphasis on local computation and limited data sharing. I want to live in a world where that’s the headline, where those are things that customers regularly demand, things that threaten every company that fails to provide them.

Krásné dobré ráno mastodončata! 🙋‍♀️🐕🐈
Dneska budu zase běhat jako křeček v kolečku a přebíhat z jednoho úseku do druhého. Ba i třetího. 🤣
Ale zítra! Zítra bych snad mohla mít volno. Dcera národa bude mít slavnostní předávání maturitního vysvědčení.
Sluníčko vykouklo, zamávalo a šlo si ještě zdřímnout.
Vy žádné šlofíky a hybaj do práce chásko! 😁😁

Very cool that they're fixing this. There are 2 issues I have that I hope get fixed eventually. One is navigating the bookshelf by 10 books at a time. Used to use that feature on my 2nd gen victor all the time, but now it's gone. Also, I don't know if this one can be fixed with software or not but the headphone jack on the new victor is vwery, very picky. So far, I've only found one cord that actually works with it. Most cables I plug in, it just keeps using the built in speaker like there's nothing plugged in. It would eventually be nice if we could format SD cards without going into the diagnostics menu, but that's not as much of a priority for me as the other issues.

Though call recording is yet another feature that many Android devices have had for years, iOS 18 seems to allow it in the US, unlike the Google Phone app on Android devices.

Although Google's already notifies participants that they're being recorded, it still doesn't let you record calls in the US, even if you live in a one-party consent state! Besides, the notification would be enough for two-party consent states, since participants could leave the call if they don't consent to the recording.

Habe meinen Leseratten mal schnell noch ein wenig Futter ins Nest gelegt, und 14 weitere #eBooks bei ebooks.qumran.org/ hochgeladen. Wie immer: Viel Spaß beim Stöbern und Schmökern!

After the WWDC keynote, Apple's Craig Federighi and John Giannandrea sat down to talk more in-depth about its AI efforts with Apple Intelligence -- including about how the company trained the models.

There’s an awesome new tool in the journey to replace passwords: Automatic passkey upgrades.

For a short window after a user signs in using Password AutoFill, apps and websites can “conditionally” request passkey creation for that same account. The Passwords app then creates a new passkey and notifies the user. No upsells or speed bumps.

All credential managers can support this! (There’s lots of new API for credential managers this year!)

More info drops tomorrow: developer.apple.com/wwdc24/101…

If you're one of those who is considering taking the plunge into #iOS18, if you've already done it, or even if you're just curious and want to track reported issues, I've created a forum topic over on @AppleVis to have a centralized place to talk bugs/issues.

Still looking for a reason to bother adding alt text to your images here? Here's one: out and about in low bandwidth land images may not ever load. The first image here is what it looks like. The second one shows what you get when the author included a description.
Folks who are blind don't need low bandwidth to experience the difference, in case you didn't know the most important reason.

in reply to Wil James🍻

@wiljames I've considered it, but then I wondered if it would just be a bit too creepy for me to be using my own voice for my own phone? Or will this be a way that people distinguish each other's phones like at conventions for the blind? Only time will tell how it turns out, but considering I had mentioned wanting this last year, I got too excited to show it off in a spirit of "Apple does listen to their users!" because clearly they expanded the feature.

Wrote up some initial thoughts on the Apple Intelligence WWDC announcements today:

- On-device models that can outsource to Apple’s servers with cryptographic guarantees of privacy are really interesting
- Restricting image generation to three approved styles (sketch, illustration and animation) avoids a whole host of complicated ethical concerns
- App Intents look like a minefield for prompt injection

There seems to be some hyperbole going on about the EU elections. Some countries had far right gains but other countries had far right collapses, and the overall picture seems to be pretty static.

See the attached diagram of the outgoing EU parliament compared to the incoming EU parliament, with the far right-associated groupings marked.
