I have failed to promote this very much.

In a couple weeks I’ll be presenting at A11y Camp in Melbourne, Australia.

On Tuesday, 22 October I am running a workshop:
a11ycamp.com.au/workshops/#wsh…

I'm keynoting the talks on Wednesday, 23 October:
a11ycamp.com.au/program/

So if hashtags #accessibility and/or #inclusion are your deal, then you should attend. You can get 10% of tickets with the code A11Y FRIEND10.

in reply to modulux

in reply to Laura S(ierpe) Maquilón 🐍

It looks like I, and every other Mastodon instance admin who has federated with #LivingBlindfully will be cleaning up their retries queue for some time to come, hopefully not in perpetuity. Does #Masto.Host not execute self-destruct on instances that go away? Seems like a basic thing to do. Or maybe I'm wrong? Ugh.

Towards the end of 2023, I submitted an issue to the SCRCPY (ScreenCopy) Android mirroring tool regarding TalkBack keyboard commands not being grabbed properly.

I'm happy to say that as of a few weeks ago, a fix to the issue of alt+arrows being intercepted by the SCRCPY application itself has been corrected. Now, as long as the -K switch is applied (set the keyboard to uhid) and --shortcut-mod is set to anything other than any of the alt keys...

Reading the manual of my new #Shearwater dive computer before class, as one does, and I noticed a note "Color Blind Users:"

The warning or critical warning states can
be determined without the use of color

Color blind users
Warnings display
on a solid inverted
background

Critical Warnings flash
between inverted and
normal text

The note is illustrated with gray scale pictures.

I'm not color blind (that I know about), but I appreciate the attention to #accessibility.

Not sure why it's the TBI and not the FBI coming down on these guys, but if they're not lying about FinCen access then that's a pretty big deal.

"NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — A well-known Arizona election denier says his group — working through a conspiracy-minded assistant police chief in tiny Millersville, Tennessee — gained access to a highly confidential federal database that tracks Americans’ banking transactions and other financial data.

Mark Finchem, who pushed lies about the 2020 presidential election and waged an unsuccessful campaign for Arizona’s secretary of state in 2022, made the stunning admissions during a series of recent interviews with far-right podcasters and in a “press conference” staged in Las Vegas to support Millersville Assistant Police Chief Shawn Taylor.

Taylor's department and residence were raided last month by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation following questions raised by an exclusive NewsChannel 5 investigation.

"There's a system called FinCen where we're actually able to track money laundering," Finchem said two weeks ago in that “press conference” to which only other far-right podcasters and conspiracy theorists were invited.'

Some of us are aware that -40° Celsius is also -40° Fahrenheit. It's the only point where the two scales agree.

But did you know there are palindrome temperatures and they're very useful also!

16° Celsius = 61° Fahrenheit
28° Celsius = 82° Fahrenheit

Adobe acrobat pro has got to be the most nonsensical piece of software in existence. It’s infuriating!

Want to tag elements? Surely the tags panel would make sense but nope, use the reading order panel instead.

Want to fix reading order? You’re out of luck with the reading order panel. Check the contents panel instead.

I spend most of my time just googling where to find things 😤

I am thinking about getting me a pair of #SmartGlasses. This will be a first for me so I am looking for your input. I hear a lot about the #Meta smart glasses, but I am wondering what else people are using?
in reply to Jonathan Mosen

So what is your favorite chest holster? How do you keep the phone from moving around when walking? I might go that way too.

alright an informal very unscientific poll. How many people use cheque deposit on a mobile banking app. If you do, does your bank provide any kind of guidance on how to center the cheque in the frame when trying to deposit it? If so, can you tell me which bank it is? If you are feeling really generous, an audio recording would be fantastic. I am working with one of our groups to implement this feature and I would love to see good examples I know what I want but working examples would be fantastic.
in reply to Brian Moore

If someone offers me a check, the first thing I do is laugh at them. Honestly haven’t needed to deposit a check in probably five years or more.
in reply to Jason Fayre

@jfayre no, it is a pretty rare thing for me but lots of people still ike them.
in reply to Brian Moore

@Tamasg I can say for certain that the Wells Fargo mobile app provides this feature. However, I must also add that I am not super-impressed by their detection algorithm. It is very sensitive to the background. True, VOiceOver does speak announcements, but unfortunately most of the time I still had to rely on a sighted person to complete the deposit. I call this an inaccessible accessibility experience!

I wonder if the fediverse is worse for the planet than Twitter was? Surely a few massive data centers use less water and power than thousands of servers spread out all over the place, right? Not to mention the extra internet traffic, content and infrastructure duplication etc. If we really care about the environment, shouldn’t we be championing massive centralization?
in reply to Samuel Proulx

Very hard to measure, and the fedi does not do a lot of things centralised alternatives do such as surveillance and advertising, which does take up considerable resources and storage. But probably per user it is less efficient, I would think.
in reply to modulux

Also, how many of us massively overprovision our servers? I know I’m guilty of that. Estimating exactly how much ram or CPU a federated service requires is a skill, and I don’t have it. I’m not a business, so I have no economic pressure to squeeze out every last drop of performance either.
in reply to Samuel Proulx

On the other hand, I run a lot of stuff on the same server I run fedi stuff on. Email, websites, IRC bots... And it runs on bare metal, no container or virtual machines or cloud indirection. So not sure how much of a factor that may be.
in reply to modulux

Same, but I had to containerize everything for security and ease of maintenance. I don’t think docker is too bad. However, it does mean my resource needs are wildly unpredictable to me.
in reply to Samuel Proulx

I don't understand containers and all that stuff... I'm just too old school and haven't put in the time and effort to learn, so I just run everything on dedicated servers and use normal package management or manual builds for things.
in reply to Samuel Proulx

Anyway, one thing I agree on is the replication is excessive, and it's also a cost that could be significantly reduced. Imagine images and so on stored on a DHT where everyone puts in some storage and can retrieve from it. Only one copy of a file would need to be stored. (Realistically, say 5 copies for redundancy.) I know there are people interested in making something like this happen.
in reply to Samuel Proulx

Yes, something like it. Not sure IPFS is exaclty the right way to do it, but certainly the same sort of concept.
in reply to Samuel Proulx

here's another twist to that: What if multiple mastodon instances are hosted on a shared server through KVMs, and they're all pulling the same data and building multiple copies of that cache from the data but on the same infrastructure for duplication. Some of this sadly becomes a bit unavoidable during the streaming age - if we consider bandwidth and computing impact I would think the amount of throwaway data getting streamed would be a bit higher overall.

Oooh those reports, so colorful. But seeing a colours in reports has at least one benefit - there is a slightly lower chance someone is deliberately lying to you and even red should not be a disaster but a starting point of a discussion how to make the things better.
