Every one was focused on the person's technical and professional backgrounds and what skills they want to learn or tech topics they're interested in.
One guy mentioned off-hand about being busy moving around the country with his wife and kids. Another guy is 75 and mentioned in a reply to someone inquiring about his early career that women did the punch cards and men did the programming when he started. Those were the only two other semi-questionable comments if you want to really be pedantic.
Not a single mention of personal life details like this in any other post.

Yes, this is a problem for some applications. But such applications can still run under Xwayland, and that will likely remain the case for a long time. So I think the Wayland community's approach of carefully, deliberately addressing specific use cases through protocol extensions is correct, though it's annoying to application developers in the short term.
You mean annoying forever, because "just use Xwayland" is not actually a solution if we want all apps on Wayland. The linked article is extremely opinionated, e.g. the "shell components" argument is void since that one can be solved by giving clients sufficient hints. All examples are also from single-window apps. 1/x
Also note that this restriction applies mostly to arbitrary applications. The end-user can still configure their compositor to do absolute positioning of windows as they see fit. And privileged (shell) components have their dedicated protocol to do their own thing.
I myself am immediately suspicious of anyone who has an issue with this. It's just a lot of application developers who for whatever reason think they know better than the desktop where windows should be positioned, which is so weird. Like, stay in your lane? Just leave window management to the desktop?

Bug Hunter (1990) is one of those rare puzzle platformers written exclusively for the Acorn 32-bit machines.
Whenever I stumble on an Archimedes title, I perk up. These machinesโdescendants of Acornโs BBC lineโwere the first computers powered by ARM CPUs. Think about that: ARM, the chipset now running your phone, your tablet, your Nintendo Switch, even your M-series Mac.
Back in 1990, ARM wasnโt about pocket gadgets. It was pitched as the next big leap in desktop computing. Only problem was the Acorn Archimedes barely left the UK, and outside of classrooms, almost nobody touched one.
Thatโs a shame, because games like Bug Hunter show what these machines could do. The hero is Hysteron Proteronโa bioengineered soldier gone wrong. A lab mix-up left him a spineless bug-eyed creature who canโt actually fight. So the army threw him on pest control duty.
His gimmick: suckered feet that let him scuttle along floors, ceilings, and walls, and the ability to pick up objects and drop them on unsuspecting insects. Kill them all, move to the next room, repeat. Simple, but clever.
Graphically, itโs impressive for 1990. Crisp sprites, fluid enough movement, and backgrounds that look every bit as solid as what youโd see on the Amiga or Genesis. The SNES wasnโt even out yet, and hereโs Acorn pushing visuals in that league.
Sound, though, is the usual British compromise: no music, just effects. Still, compared to the PC speaker squawks of DOS games, those crunchy bug-splat noises were fine.
What makes Bug Hunter stand out isnโt just the gameplayโitโs the personality. One room even has a parody movie poster on the wall: Schwarzenegger in Decorator, with the tagline โThey picked the wrong manโฆโ Itโs little details like that which make it feel less like a generic extermination game and more like someoneโs sly passion project. Which it was.
Ian Richardson, a solo dev at the time, built this thing himself. Heโd later go on to Gremlin and Ocean before becoming a respected figure in UK game development. He passed away in 2021, but Bug Hunter remains a testament to his early craft.
The sequel, Bug Hunter in Space, came out the same year, expanding the concept to alien ships and teleports. And Bug Hunter & Moon Dash was even sold together on a single disk, though everyone agrees Moon Dash was the weaker half. Bug Hunterโs the one people rememberโthe one schoolkids used to sneak onto Archimedes machines in British classrooms.
So if you ever find an Acorn 32-bit, donโt pass this up. Bug Hunter is charming, tough, and a reminder that the ARM revolution didnโt start with iPhones. It started with a bug-eyed mutant wandering the walls on a forgotten British computer.

I don't have any specific info, but I expect the issues which would need to be overcome would include licensing, and also if the voices require internet access to work, responsiveness. It is one thing to throw a page of text at a synthesizer, have it take a couple of seconds to process that online and return it and then read it out - but if it did that every time you press right arrow to move by one character, that would be quite frustrating for users

This is a great example of an add-on where the original author didn't have capacity to continue developing it, and has passed it on to someone else. This is a healthy part of our ecosystem and one which should be encouraged.

Unless you were thinking of the mouse option "Play Audio Co-ordinates when mouse moves"? (That was introduced in NVDA 0.6p2 though so it's been around for quite awhile!)

Yes, there's a substantial alt-right contingent among the X11 holdouts. But there are still valid, non-political reasons to need X11, or at least Xwayland. Some desktop applications legitimately need to position themselves at absolute coordinates on the user's display(s). In light of TheEvilSkeleton's post that you boosted, I more deeply regret what I said. I don't even use that program I posted about; I'm just a fan of the author, and I shared his evident frustration that Wayland isn't allowing something that all desktop GUI platforms have allowed forever. But I went too far in what I said, and won't say anything like that again. I'm grateful for all of the work that everyone has given away on free desktop projects.

To be fair to @burnoutqueen, full support for Orca keyboard commands in some Wayland compositors is a recent development; I only released the prototype ~15 months ago, and if I'm not mistaken, the production implementation was only released in GNOME this March.
@burnoutqueen Thankfully, support for the KeyboardMonitor D-Bus interface, that enables screen reader keyboard commands to work correctly across all apps on Wayland, landed in Mutter, libatspi, Orca, and even KWin in time for Debian trixie. I'm not aware of any other recent fixes or critical features that arrived more recently. So Wayland should be pretty usable already on the latest stable Debian.

@jaybird110127 You can filter the notifications tab to show only replies, when you switch to it look a bit above the tab bar and you should see 2 buttons, all and replies. Tap on the second one and all the other things will disappear. I'm not sure if you can then duplicate it to have a dedicated mentions tab on the bottom.
Has anyone tried Mattermost? It's a slack-like application, but open-source, and can be hosted. If you have, I will not mind if you share any tips, comments on its accessibility. Looking for another messenger, that is self-hosted, because XMPP multi device encryptions keep breaking, and sometimes, nothing syncs properly. Thanks!

Yes. I have a dilemma now though: I use both native Win and WSL, and the latter more often than the former (for web development). But a GUI in WSLโฆ probably a bad idea.
@menelion So, we are working on making Gemini-cli more accessible. It's not going to be perfect, but much better TUI than many tools have today, including Claude Code. The first batch of changes is already in if the app is run with the "--screen-reader" flag.

Seems fine except for maybe a bit of bad grammar around the "I am also a furry" part right? Well turns out behind the scenes the post was edited to not say "I am queer" before mentioning being a furry, and they got in a lotta trouble with the mods. This led to them no longer feeling welcome on the Ubuntu discourse forums.
The reason given was that the word Queer is a sexual word, which is just patently untrue. Saying you're queer gives less info into your sex life than mentioning your wife/husband, and if that was banned it'd be fucking stupid. Of course by the responses of the mods, it is made clear that that's not the real reason, and instead they're making the decision because of politics.
In the next few posts I'll talk about these extremely problematic moderator responses. 1/5

I would love to know what parts of the post I got wrong so I could fix them but as of writing this it doesn't seem like they've reached out to me about it.
They also claim that the post wasn't edited because of self-identifying as queer at all, as the three different reasons from the first three different people all stated, but instead was for a secret fourth reason to be revealed shortly.
I am looking forward to hearing their full statement and hope they have been having lotsa productive discussions about how to best make the ubuntu community an inclusive and welcoming space for it's queer members!!!!

I've had two gay coworkers come out (OUTSIDE OF WORK) to me because I was the only one they were comfortable with and I was the first they introduced me to their partners. Still lifelong friends with these people, in their weddings, etc etc.

Second, the whole idea of things being apolitical is just a vague excuse to discriminate. A few years ago Florida passed a law nicknamed "Don't say gay" which banned teachers from mentioning their sexuality or gender identity to students at all; so if banning queer people from mentioning their identity in your forums is apolitical, then why the fuck is it a more extreme political position than that taken by a far-right politician who literally posted Nazi propaganda on twitter? This fucker is just trying to hide his political extremist views behind a guise of fairness.

Naturally you might think that saying you're queer might equate to saying you're Christian, or saying you're Jewish, which should both be fine; but apparently they equate it to saying you're Christian, and also that you think queer people (other members of the community) are abominations.
If you look past the fact that they talk like Ben Shapiro and ChatGPT had a baby that didn't know how capitalization worked, there is at least a little bit of sense here though. Saying you're queer and saying you're bigoted are the same in that they will both piss people off. If they actually cared about a fair, friendly, and welcoming community, they'd notice that they are also very different in that one is a statement of identity, and the other is a statement of hate towards other members of the community. Another difference is that bigots want queers to not be able to say they're queer, and queers want to not have to hide their identity, so banning both in this silly hypothetical is still giving the bigots what they want and siding against queers. All in all, I can give the benefit of the doubt here and assume they're simply too much of a coward to fight back against bigots in and out of the mod team, so instead they are taking the path of least resistance and telling everyone to be quiet so they don't have to deal with it, while ignoring the inequity of that. 4/5

All in all Canonical and Ubuntu, through their inaction, and by electing a mod team that made this decision with seemingly no dissent, have taken the far right position that people shouldnโt even be allowed to mention their queerness, which gives the extremists what they want, and them not being able to be explicit about their hate (and the mods here are already very implicitly bigoted), is a small loss when they already get their way by forcing us queers into the closet in any of their spaces. On top of that, even though itโs been a couple days so far, the leadership hasnโt done anything and saying queer is seemingly still banned on their forums.
This is absolutely unacceptable, and I recommend anyone who is queer, has queer friends, or just generally cares about people being allowed to live their lives, to not use Ubuntu, spread the word, and not contribute to their community; until they put solid policy in place to make it clear that everyone is welcome and allowed to be themselves in their community.
And remember, the more people boost this, the more likely Canonical is to feel pressured to change their policies and take action to help queer people feel included in their community. Queer Ubuntu users deserve to be able to openly be a part of the community and be treated with the same respect as anyone else.

Update 2: Unofficial response from queer ubuntu member, diversity statement, post is reverted, but...
The first response is a queer Ubuntu member saying that it was a mistake and shouldn't've happened. As I've argued in my previous posts, I think that the moderator responses are acting on their underlying values as opposed to it being a simple mistake. If those values conflict with the values of Ubuntu, then that is a problem that is a bit more difficult to solve than with a talking to.
If I were in the position of the moderators I'd be either reflecting on my values; or stepping down, and maybe looking to moderate a space that more closely aligns with my values such as Hyprland. As a moderator myself I've been on the verge of stepping down for much much less.
Overall though I do think they are taking the right attitude.
Another response has told me that apparently there is a diversity policy. I was gonna make a whole stink about how it's hard to find, and how it's arguably a suggestion as opposed to the actual CoC (which it's not included in). Then I actually read it and it includes "Political beliefs" as a protected class. This means that the positions of the moderators are actually totally in line with the diversity policy. Putting queer people and people who want queer people gone into the same category IS a component of far-right ideology, as I covered in post 2. Not having discrimination based on political beliefs necessitates having discrimination based on other protected classes.
Lastly the post got reverted. This is largely symbolic, as I doubt lukas will actually want to participate in the community after all that. I woulda been a lot happier about writing this down if I didn't just read their diversity statement that implies the moderators' actions were, in fact, in line with the values of of Canonical and Ubuntu.
All in all this a very good change. I don't think I could've written better rules myself. I've said that I don't think marginalized groups and bigots can coexist when treated as two equal sides. I do, however, think that we can coexist in a world where they work along side us, as long as they are told to shut the fuck up when they start being harmful, divisive, and/or assholes. Studies show that this dynamic when we all interact, just as normal people, without someone being yelled at for being themselves, is the best way to make a more tolerant world. I feel that these rules perfectly accomplish that.
Of course that all assumes they are enforced fairly, and by people who aren't biased against the vales those rules represent, which brings me to the response itself: web.archive.org/web/2025090815โฆ
If you give the benefit of the doubt, it casts a new light on why the initial action was taken: due to generational gap, the mod saw it as a sexualized slur. Unfortunately that was a very small part of the criticisms; and the fact that two other mods chimed in, with responses that I've argued were both clearly not a mistake, and extremely ideologically charged; means that this response wasn't as perfect as the rule changes.
I don't think that necessarily makes it bad mind you, but it does mean that the team will have it's work cut out for them making sure the people enforcing their rules aren't biased against said rules. Lets all remember what happened with Hyprland after the drama: they added rules about discrimination, but the leader of the project still agreed that it's ok to ban people for having pronouns in username.
Even a really good set of rules are still no better than the people enforcing them.

True conclusion: All in all I think at this point, I think the community finally has good rules in place to protect marginalized people, but I also think it's important to test the waters still.
Just because the rules are there, doesn't mean that they will be enforced fairly. I do still have my doubts that the mods I called out in posts 2-4, will be able to enforce the rules fairly, and keep their personal biases out of their decisions as moderators of the community, especially since they managed to turn what could've been a simple misunderstanding, into a massive political shitshow. If I were them, I'd be resigning right now, and if I were their peers, I'd be super pissed off, and kindly suggesting they resign right now.
(to be clear this is only the two who responded, and that I called out, specifically NOT wild_man who initially did the action. I think it'd be good to take the council's word that at least this was a genuine misunderstanding. I do genuinely believe them here myself.)
Now that this seems to be wrapping up, lets all remember that the actions we take should focus on making the world a better place. I think everyone involved can still be a productive member of the community, even if they shouldn't be the ones enforcing the rules. I also think it should be important to treat each other with kindness by default, it's rare that unkindness makes the world better.
I hope the community council continues down this path, and makes sure the rules are actually enforced as intended. I also recognize that while a few days is an eternity in internet time, it's just a short moment in bureaucracy time, so I appreciate the council coming together on such short notice to make an overall good decision. If they don't, I will do my best to add one last update.

We live in a pretty rural area with no official weather stations around.
The ones that are nearest are in somewhat differe
how does wind speed and direction measurements work for you? Our all-in-one weather station is on a fence two meters above the ground and it's just terrible for wind measurements. The wind changes direction several times a minute in our garden. I'm thinking about getting a separate sensor which I would put on the roof.
I upload data from our station to Windy.com. One of the benefits is that I can compare the actual data with values forecast by different models and get some sense of what is the best model for our location. As you can see the wind direction is pretty much random. By weather measurement standards the temperature sensor should be 2 meters above a grass surface, wind sensors should be 10 meters above the ground. So with all-in-one stations, which is what I have now, you have to decide between one or the other when it comes to accuracy.
@sesivany We have an Ecowitt weather station and I have never noticed an issue with wind speed or direction. We are sometimes not sure about the rain gauge. Itโs at least sprinkling and it records nothing. We joke a bird is sitting in the cup.
Has anyone here attempted running Friendica in FrankenPHP or similar? Was curious if the extra effort was worth any noticeable performance improvement. Thanks!
