I'm growing tired of people blaming accessibility guidelines, for stripping away the creativity from the web. Most websites are not accessible. Many designers don't know (yet I hope), or don't care about accessibility. Or care in a performative way. So, stop blaming accessibility for this. Thanks.
Getting excited. I just started a new repository on Github, a brand new project that I hope I'll get to show you soon. The initial target is Windows. I will eventually make it for Windows and Mac. I currently don't have a Mac so testing opportunities are limited. I prefer to test as I go.
Obviously, whatever I develop will be fully accessible.

@matt I'm mostly using Rust with Winit. I'm having to use Win32 for some of it on the Windows side. I may have to do something similar for Mac OS. I couldn't get GTK to work with AccessKit here.
@matt You know, it helps if you read the documentation correctly. For reason that my brain can't fathom other than general fatigue, it interpreted that Slint didn't have full AccessKit support. I have to read the docs; but it appears to be a far more feasible option than just Winit with AccessKit. I may end up using Winit for some.

software libraries need something akin to Datasheets. A technical document which lists facts about the operating parameters and intended uses, meant for a technically-minded person to evaluate “is this suitable for my use case?” and “what all would be involved in integrating this into my product?”
in my experience too much of this material for software reads like marketing fluff, making empty promises about ease or scale or whatever without any context under which those promises apply
we talk about software “engineering” and this sort of technical document strikes me as fundamental to that practice
I got a weird feeling hearing Takei. he can't help being 88, of course, but he obviously sounds much older than his character at this point. I was about to draw a parallel to his appearance in voyager's Flashback episode, but that itself was 28 years ago this month. And now I feel old.
Was rearranging my home office, and forgot to unplug the cable from the keyboard's own USB C port; of course, the keyboard fell on the floor right on the plug. Result: the USB C connector inside the receptacle got sheared clean off the PCB. Sadly, I don't have the tools (or the skills) to repair it, so I'll have to order a new Keychron.

I've rarely seen it done very successfully, if I'm honest. As a teacher those who'd been homecshooled were very obvious when they came into my classroom. My daughter has a couple of online friends who are homeschooled and socially, they are very different to the rest.
I'm sure it can work well in the right circumstances, but it's a bit like mainstream education for the blind. if one of the little things isn't quite in place properly the problems scale up quickly.
I was. Access technology skills to start with, computing and information technology during the pandemic, and a bit of Eng Lit when school needed cover.
It was a privilege to be able to support so many young people over a decade at the place. I don't miss the paperwork or the management, but there's something about teaching a skill or sharing knowledge that's very hard to replace now I've left.

The bit about SD cards being slow at random reads is interesting. Lately I've been mulling over an idea for Raspberry Pi-like computers, where you use an initramfs as your root FS, have some kind of process for rebuilding it with new packages, and only selectively write to the SD card the things that you really need to be durable. Haven't really fleshed it out yet, though.
@matt That's an interesting idea! Perhaps a base image on squashfs or something that gets copied to zram on boot, and then overlayfs/aufs/etc to capture changes above it. The problem there may be the limited RAM of the Pis though.
That's a valid point about limited RAM. Of course, there are Pis these days with more RAM, so depending on how big the root FS is, it might not be practically an issue. On early personal computers we used to load the OS and current application fully into RAM up-front, especially so we could swap the floppy in our one floppy drive.
@matt Hah, yes, right you are. I remember the annoyance when some larger application caused DOS to deallocate COMMAND.COM, so when it exited, I'd have to pop a DOS disk back in drive A: before I could get back to the prompt.
One of the many things finally getting a hard drive helped with!
Yeah, it's funny, on my family's first computer (an Apple IIGS), the thing I wanted most was a hard drive. And now I'm wanting to recreate the old experience of tinkering without worrying about wrecking the one OS install by switching between multiple bootable floppies, but now using SD cards.

The proposals as stated have been requiring providers of e2ee messaging to do the backdoors, which would basically mean the corporate shit platforms get backdoored and the real stuff first fights then ignores the law if they don't win, and possibly gets removed from app stores, relegated to sideloading.
Nobody wants to be the party doing the backdooring. Apple is not going to step up to do it at the OS level, and ruin their reputation, when they can say "the regulation puts the burden on chat providers, not us" (except iMessage which they'd probably backdoor).

@Kierkegaanks Fortunately we are free to choose what OS we are using. There is Linux, there are the BSDs, there is GrapheneOS. So the choice is ours whether we want Freedom or total control.
@Kierkegaanks I think this is what they are already trying to do with their new AOSP strategy. They want to make it harder for developers of custom ROMs so they finally give up. It’s a good example how even open source can be destroyed when there are interests of large companies behind it.
i dont get that chat control. how does this work with open source messengers, like dunno, where encryption is client side and the server acts as a broker. how in snowdens name can you add a backdoor in there?
especially if you only act as broker with like a protocol that any app could implement.

Please nobody forget that control is not only about how to backdoor some technology. It's politics and this is more creative and more dangerous for society than a poorly secured chat app.
People who want to mandate backdoors either don't understand or don't care that any backdoor they can mandate, a nation-state threat actor can and probably will find and exploit.
@zakalwe or, option 3: they understand, and care, and explicitly want backdoor access to their citizen's data for purposes they will never mention publicly until forced to do so by journalism and the law.
it's literally why the UK demanded it. We don't live in a very nice world at the moment, lots of fights to be had to rein all this back in and lots of political parties that need to be joined by level headed folks so they can be taken over by people who actually care about more than just their clique of friends =(

So as much as I REALLY REALLY wish they'd stop putting it in their browser, I don't hate that they're working on AI in itself, because the way they did that wasn't bad so far, AFAIK.
@modulux @jsoriano @stepheneb I don't think you'd find it less useful if it was opt-in, or an optional Mozilla-built extension. The bundling of other AI stuff and the fact that it's opt-out doesn't become less problematic because local translation is useful to some people.

Question to talk back users. I have a pixel 9a for testing, and I'm encountering something weird. Half the time, when I double tap, it doesn't register my inputs. It also happens with other gestures, but not as often. Is there a setting I need to adjust? Something I'm doing wrong? I also borrowed one of my student's galaxy s25 to test this, and saw it happening there.

@FreakyFwoof A very small (7 inch) fully open source Linux laptop that is completely open even down to the firmware. Uses a rockchip CPU, 32gb of ram, and a 1tb NVME.
The world clock in Google's current clock application centers the HH:MM:SS clock with a fixed padding on the left and right side.
However, it is not using a monospace font.
Meaning that the digits jump around left and right (and also extend/shrink to the top and bottom) every second, most noticeably when the second goes x0 → x1 → x2.
I am at the same time very and not at all surprised that this made it to prod.
For the past few months I have been visiting daily the home pages of Wikipedia's English and Italian (my native language) editions. Since featured articles and highlights change every day these pages are incredible resources for discovering facts, stories, places, and connections on all sorts of topics.
libcurl has done internet transfers specified as URLs for a long time, but the URLs you'd tell libcurl to use would always just get parsed and used internally.
