There are many reasons to loathe Amazon but closing DPReview with no plan for archival is now on my top 5 list. If you're not a photographer it might sound like a big deal but that site is the most comprehensive & informative collection of camera knowledge that exists in addition to being a still-thriving community. Every time I get new gear I literally spend hours on it researching. This is such a gut punch for anyone who needs to understand their equipment. #photography

Amazon has plans to lay off at least 27,000 workers this year, including 9,000 that were announced in an internal email Monday morning. One unexpected casualty: Digital Photography Review, also known as DPReview, is losing its entire editorial staff, and the site will stop publishing on April 10.
The announcement post, written by DPReview General Manager Scott Everett, says that new pieces will continue to be posted through April 10, and "the site will be locked" afterward. It's unclear what will happen to the site's content afterward—the post promises only that the site's articles "will be available in read-only mode for a limited period afterwards." Any photos and text that readers have uploaded to their accounts can be requested and downloaded until April 6, "after which we will not be able to complete the request."

The colors themselves are a placeholder atm.

The demo on the left is using SDL, it's the one from gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/Initiat… but using accent color as well now.

It looks like the packager for Arch did not include install_configs.sh. I wonder if it should be ran during the install process, or maybe placed in /usr/share/odilia for the user to run after installation. I'm guessing that since it needs to be ran as root, it could be ran during the installatioin process, but I'm not sure how fakeroot would handle it, because it needs to create in pkgdir/wherever.

can you open an issue for that? I'll write on the matrix as well, but it's better to have bugs, especially UX ones, documented in issues where we can see them. I'm thinking of a system where odilia doesn't need any config file to be present when it starts, since if it's not, it'll just create one in $XDG_CONFIG_HOME/odilia/config, with default values and all that. However, I'm not sure if we need that, because you get this stuff once. Till the issue is fixed, clone the repo and run script

you can comment on the package what pertains to the package if you want, since the maintainer of the AUR package, tate, is a member of the odilia org as well, so it's maintained by us as well. About automatic generating of config files, sure, that goes on the odilia issue tracker. Or, if you feel like doing that, you can also put both in the same issue on the repo, it'll arrive to us anyhow.

that's probably because I wrote on matrix and the packager saw it. Also, the packager is a developer, so yeah, that fixed itself soon enough. In any case, we're already at 0.1.4, with stuff being fixed. Still, if you want more imediate answers than this thread, I recommend you join us, maybe your bug has already been reported, or you could tell us in more detail what happened and we could do a kind of live debugging session. But sure, open an issue first, at least we know where to start

Can I just remind webdev folk that, if you're providing a service without thinking of WHEN people will use it, you run the risk of that service being inferior for the use?

In this very real example, the PG&E status map, that really you only need when your power is out: the default SHOULD be a low-bandwidth version, since you're far more likely to want to see it when your power is out and have no internet.

Don't be like these guys, please.

#Debirdify has been suspended by Twitter without warning or explanation. Apparently it violated ‘Twitter rules and policies’, but that is all they told us.

We contacted Twitter support about the situation, but we are not particularly optimistic.

We always knew this could happen; it happened to other services in the past, so we are neither particularly surprised nor sad about it.

Je to značka, která má hodnotu sama o sobě. Věřím, že zájem je.
Spíš mě zaráží různé nepřesnosti, jako např., že Botas šel do likvidace pár týdnů po přerušení výroby v lednu, pričemž v likvidaci je už od 1. 1. 2023 (viz notářský zápis již z půlky prosince 2022 or.justice.cz/ias/ui/vypis-sl-… ).
