I am reading Cavenden Hall by Barbara Taylor Bradford. I read it once, on a plane from London to LA, but I can't remember it too well, so really enjoying the second read. Anyone who loves Downton Abbey should consider it, it reminds me of Downton in so many ways. Actually it was written before Downton was even a twinkle in Julian Fellows's eye, but there are definite similarities. Incidentally, I wonder why on earth no Downton novels? There are books, but they're behind the scenes things or cookery books. I bet the novels would sell like hot cakes if they're decently written.
in reply to Lulu Hartgen

That's a very good question. I don't know why science fiction franchises are able to produce so many novels but, as far as I know, there aren't any official novels for Downton Abbey. I'm sure there's lots of DA fan fiction but I do agree that official novels would likely do well. If I'm going to be honest, Downton Abbey novels would probably sell more copies than many Doctor Who novels and BBC Books has no issues producing DW novels.
It would be amazing if they could have an original cast member reading an audio version of the book or to have a company producing official DA audio dramas. I think it would sell quite well.

in reply to David Goldfield

@DavidGoldfield I would sure consider buying them. They sure had enough other related merchandise that's for sure and some of it was, well, never mind.
in reply to David Goldfield

@DavidGoldfield I'd like to see an EarthSearch franchise of novels, maybe taking the story further, maybe going down rabbit trails they didn't have the time for during the original series, that sort of thing. Mind Warp didn't do it for me, since its link to EarthSearch was so tenuous.
in reply to Bruce Toews

@Bruce_Toews I also would love to read Earthsearch novels, as there's so much they could do with those stories. I wonder if the lack of fiction from some of these franchises comes down to a rights issue in that the BBC might not have the rights to either some of these characters or with the franchises as a whole.
in reply to Bruce Toews

@Bruce_Toews You could argue the small market case for Earthsearch but I don't think that's the case for Downton Abbey. I'm not sure how well DA novels would do with the show being off the air for so long. Then again, when Doctor Who was on hiatus from 1989 until 2005 I'm sure that a lot of people would have assumed that publishing original novels wouldn't sell to a big enough audience but it obviously did well enough and I imagine DA would do even better.
in reply to David Goldfield

@DavidGoldfield @Bruce_Toews There are the movies, so it's not like it's out of the public eye. There's going to be a third and they say final movie next year.
in reply to Lulu Hartgen

@Bruce_Toews Wow, I didn't know a third movie was in the works; that's exciting. Thank you for letting me know. I liked the first movie but couldn't get into the second although I should probably give it another chance.
in reply to David Goldfield

@DavidGoldfield @Bruce_Toews yes, they're talking about it being out next year, or so it says on Wicky. I haven't watched the movies, to be honest I was so happy with how the series ended, I wanted to leave it be. Sometimes when you watch a sequel or even read one, you end up wishing you hadn't.
in reply to David Goldfield

@DavidGoldfield it sure would. Except it would be an independent tv company who did the selling, because Downton wasn't made by the BBC. I don't remember who made it now, if any of the ITV companies did, or if it was an independent production. Ah, Wicky is informative. It was jointly produced by Carnival Films and WGBH-TV, whoever they are, I never heard of them! I bet the beeb wish they had done it! Lol!

Keepass for managing passwords.
Ditto for managing my clipboard.
Executor for launching things.
Calcute for adding things up and otherwise being a better calculator than Windows already has.
MemPad for notetaking.
Microsip for my landline telephone number I've had for decades.
Jarte for when I occasionally need a long form editor with a spellcheck.
MUSHclient for online gaming, not that I have in years now sadly.
RedditForBlind for redditing.
tweesecake for being on Mastodon if I am not already in a browser.
I still use an old Winamp for music.
Veracrypt for accessing my encrypted volumes.

I'm primarily a Firefox, ms office, NVDA and Dropbox user.

The fact that the Hellsite is now completely unusable without an account is probably the best indication that your should delete your account.

Incidentally:

1. I've deleted my X/Twitter account; have only been using it to get notifications and news from streamers I follow elsewhere anyway
2. I've created an account on bsky: bsky.app/profile/ebassi.bsky.s… — still unsure as to whether I'm going to use it much

in reply to Emmanuele Bassi

I too have a bsky account, but so far my policy is that most stuff goes here, and that account is for maintaining my relationship with specific communities (local news and politics that isn't really here, my movie club, other non-hacker stuff) that have fled the bad place but didn't land here.

Microsoft are effectively giving up on Copilot Pro subscription ($20/month) as almost nobody paid for it.

Instead they are bundling it into Microsoft 365 consumer subscriptions and inflating the renewal prices there. There’s no opt out.

Effectively allows the Copilot revenue and user numbers to be inflated.

A great exampple of why #aria labels may not always bee what you want. I see so many articles/pages/what have you on the web right now that still say "Share on Twitter". Visually it's just the X logo now, but the aria label never got updated. Europe must take responsibility for its security, Polish FM says after Trump's win. "The winds of history are blowing ever more strongly. Poland's leadership will rise to the occasion," Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski said, urging European countries to boost defense spending.

Updated: Russian officials cautiously cheer on Trump's victory. Russian war in 'stalemate,' needs to be brought to end, Republican senator says. "That doesn't mean we celebrate what Vladimir Putin did or are excited about it, but I think there has to be some common sense here. Far out in the uncharted backwaters of the unfashionable end of the Western spiral arm of the galaxy lies a small unregarded yellow sun. Orbiting this, at a distance of roughly ninety million miles is an utterly insignificant little blue-green planet, whose ape descended life forms are so amazingly primitive that they still think digital watches are a pretty neat idea.

This planet has, or had, a problem, which was this. Most of the people living on it were unhappy for pretty much of the time. Many solutions were suggested for this problem, but most of these were largely concerned with the movements of small, green pieces of paper, which is odd, because on the whole, it wasn't the small, green pieces of paper which were unhappy.

And so the problem remained, and lots of the people were mean, and most of them were miserable, even the ones with digital watches. Many were increasingly of the opinion that they'd all made a big mistake coming down from the trees in the first place, and some said that even the trees had been a bad move, and that no-one should ever have left the oceans.

Perhaps I'm insane for thinking this, but Bookshare ought to find a new name. I dunno. Bookshare just sounds like a piracy thing, somehow. Share the books!!!
in reply to Andy

I've had this thought, especially when telling sighted folks about it and that I can get books from there, often they think I'm talking opnely about a pirate site, that's happened.
in reply to Tamas G

@Tamasg I guess at one point, the name was more fitting, especially when the service was essentially ran by volunteers: books were scanned and then corrected for OCR errors. So books were literally shared. But that's largely not the way it works anymore.

Scroll down. It extend to the proper size.

Hover an item.

It update itself scrolling elsewhere randomly.

Change size again.

If all of that happens when you were about to select the tab you wanted then it might/will crash.
