It is not like me to complain out here in social media land. But I feel it's time that I relay my experience with Envision, their customer service and the Solos glasses. I received my glasses last Thursday. I was extremely excited as the product seemed like something that would work well for me. I watched all the videos, attended the webinars and read the user manual in advance. I paired my glasses after charging them but after waiting for 3 hours, the glasses would not recognize the camera. OK. I sent a message to customer service. I got the usual canned response that they would get back to me. I got another copy of the user manual from customer service. I decided to ask how to return the glasses because there are no return instructions on the site or in the user manual. I did what was asked and contacted customer service to get the instructions. The usual canned response ensued with another copy of the user manual. After another much more firm email I was given a meeting with Karthik Cannan, who is one of the developers. After showing him that the glasses were, in fact, not working, he stated he needed to contact Solos in Hong Kong and would contact me within a few hours. Well, many hours have passed. This meeting was on Monday and I've heard nothing since. I again emailed customer service, as well as a direct email to Mr. Cannan got the canned response but nothing more., This was not a small purchase. If this is the way a company treats people who have purchased products from them then I can't recommend anything they do, even if the product eventually works. All I want is to return the glasses, get my refund and be done with it. No harm, no foul. I hope to get this resolved soon or I'll be forced to report Envision to the Better Business bureau and take legal action. #LetsEnvision

As a society we are just completely privacy agnostic.
What fascinates me even more is how some self-declared infosec people are claiming this is totally fine to install these apps on their system because they are sandboxed.
We have shifted from if you need it, at least run it sandboxed to it's sandboxed so it can't do any harm.
And these people often end up saying that any critic against the GAFAM is purely ideological, without any root. Even if every 3 months they are caught bypassing yet another thing in place to spy even more on the users. (3 months ago was the localmess)

Well, today was the day I did it, pulled the trigger on that Tactile Engineering Cadence tablet. May end up getting a second one in a month or so if I really like it, and pair the two units together for a total of 96 cells. @pixelate oooh yeah! He had mentioned the add-on! Will have to check it out. There's talk of them giving an alternative solution to needing to buy a second one for the perkins, but they haven't revealed a lot to me yet on what or how that is, so perhaps in the future you may not need two exact units to get that, here's hoping. That could keep the cost down for some who just want something tiny, although really I do think for meaningful graphics you do kind of need a 24-cell line minimum, a little over half the line of a perkins at that point.
@DavidGoldfield This is quite intriguing. I do wish their website had a bit more information about the features and the underlying technology. For example, do they connect to Bard or other ebook services? Can I load my graphics and view them on the tablet? ETc, etc.

I fully understand the resentment against a criminal person who is tearing a country apart, but I am a firm believer that the answer to his crimes is not more crimes, but instead more justice.
Trump must be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. Win the midterms decisively. Then impeach him.

@elCelio Actually, we can kill him if it's a military operation, but first, it's extremely hard, it seems (he's paranoid as hell with his own security and he has tons of money for it), and second, it's far better to make him sing, I'm sure we would know lots and lots of interesting things and hear lots of interesting names involved in those crimes. The last update of the official #Mastodon app for Android says it includes support for post quoting. Does it work for anyone? I cannot find the option.
The post must have it enabled to be quoted to show you the quote button. So only posts created on Mastodon 4.5 can be quoted if the user allows it. And tusky does not support it yet so I had to try it from web UI.
I get JS arrow function syntax. One thing I'm still slightly unclear on is the change to the this keyword, though. Arrow functions have access to the parent scope, but how far does that extend? If I define a success handler as an arrow function inside a function, then pass that handler to a different function that runs an AJAX request, which context will my success handler wind up with? I don't expect an answer, as this is confusingly written, but it's this kind of thing I'm still unsure of.
That's why I hate modern JS with passion, it's absolutely impossible to read. Functions receiving functions within arrow functions returning functions wrapped in functions... sorry, but my brain does a stack overflow.
@menelion I agree. I hate JS and avoid it when possible, but a lot of the in-house stuff I do for work relies heavily on JS. I can't get away from it, even though it's near the bottom of my list in terms of languages I want to work with.
My latest Svelte + TypeScript project has two or three functions that are entirely ChatGPT typed and that I could not reproduce with the best of intentions.

@menelion No. I had an earlier vversion from a few months back that I couldn't figure out how to use. I saw a recommendation for it today on LinkedIn and decided to give it another chance. Downloaded and installed 0.5 and it was like night and day but so far I've only tried it with speech. One thing that I like about it is that it uses single letter hotkeys to move to elements in the file, such as headings and links, and it's very much like JAWS and NVDA in that respect. I did find one Epub file that it couldn't open which I was able to open and read with Biblos.
@jaybird110127 Quin has no Braille display and I'm not sure they can do very much to it, it's wxWidgets. I mean, the product is great, so I really don't know how to help solving this.

@tychotithonus I'm very very unsatisfied right now. This software is a bit of a nightmare.
I want to use it in socket mode. Ok, good. Syncing works. Docs are pretty terrible though. There are no examples for some rather confusing and complex things: immutable, nodeletion, nodeletionpartial
I want files in a certain directory on the server side to never be deleted, they can only be changed. I can't do it. It just simply doesn't work at all. Even logging doesn't work in socket mode. I have no idea why.
I have spent over an hour on this. This shouldn't be so hard.
I've thrown Claude at it, and it thinks in the code that when you use those settings and you have to specify the root you need special syntax because of being in socket mode, but Claude couldn't figure out what that syntax is supposed to look like. Everything its tried has been wrong.
Now I'm having qwen look at the code. It came to the same conclusion -- it needs special syntax that isn't documented, but hasn't yet figured it out
@tychotithonus oh god, ok, so I had Qwen analyze how these settings are processed anyway. They're done on the client side during reconciliation, not the server. So it's a client side setting which is unexpected (can't protect the server, have to ensure the client(s) are configured to not do bad things)

@mischievoustomato @tychotithonus I already have two Syncthings, I don't want a third. And I shouldn't be wasting 250MB+ of RAM to run a service to sync a few tiny files, it's ridiculous.
I did end up getting Unison working thanks to Qwen reading the source code to find the undocumented nonsense and now it's fast and reliable, I can just cron a sync every 5 mins
so all is well now, but it was very ugly and if only this software had better docs it would probably be used by more people.
I mean, it has a lot of docs. But they are weird. You clearly have to be inside the head of the guy who wrote it to figure out what he's referring to
