There seems to be a tendency to just pit projects against each other (or buy each other) until we only get 2 options in the end. This is horrible for consumer choices, for security, for privacy, for resilience, and just leads to more enshitification everywhere once people are locked in systems without viable alternatives.
We need much more options, everywhere. Celebrate and encourage diversity. In tech, and everywhere else.

This is a repository of apps to be used with your F-Droid client. Applications in this repository are official binaries built by the original application developers, taken from their resp. repositories (mostly Github, GitLab, Codeberg).
Systemd ate everything because they have developers working on it and addressing issues. And they do it all under a single flag, the project called systemd. I don't understand the hate. It's just software, that is pretty useful. It's useful for distros, because it's well supported and works well. It's useful for developers because it provides quite a lot of useful and stable tools to create logging and services, that are much more flexible and stable than any home grown solution.
Is it a governance issue? You don't like who is managing the project? I don't know.
Or is it change that you don't like? I assure you this is a good change from whatever was there before. It's not change for the sake of change.
You think it's not perfect and it could be marginally better? You have two paths ahead: join the project and help it improve or start your own. You will soon realize that the second option is actually a LOT of work, so please respect the work of others when they deserve it. Complaining does not help.

I wish more FOSS people would recognize that if multiple people are reporting a problem, that means that you have a problem, even if you don't understand the problem yourself, and even if the problem ends up being "just" a documentation or expectations problem.
Left the big pc running the native drive freebsd but from within Nixos since I was going to become a serial killer if I continued any longer dealing with setting up Bluetooth headphones, something that should be the simplest thing on earth in 2025 and finding no whcess and a thousand lines in multiple places none explaining what each thing does.
You need to do better regarding Bluetooth FreeBSD, A LOT better.

Anyway moved onto accessing it via xrdp (KDE for that) so I can do other stuff on my laptop while vscode is compiled piece by piece for the next decade.
mine doesn't seem to support the Bluetooth chip I have (combined with my wifi) so idk. I also have lost a lot of faith in Bluetooth, it almost always sucks outside the Apple ecosystem
@feld I have zero Bluetooth issues with Nixos. Zero.

I can either use blueman to connect and enjoy a beautiful simpleton GUI for when I feel blond-hair brained or use bluetoothctl which is pretty much what blued in FreeBSD aspires to be (same commands, really, same everything) and fails catastrophically with even describing how to compile itself.
And I certaintly don't need to be root to search bluetooth devices or connect. Let alone I could never fathom the idea of having to create a virtual sound device for it.

I can't help this. FreeBSD did the right thing when it came to audio, and Linux went a completely different direction. Same thing with networking which is why KDE on Linux has a really nice wired/wireless/VPN connection applet and on FreeBSD we get garbage.
It's not that it can't be done on FreeBSD, it's that all of these things are written to be Linux-only -- not even modular so they can work on multiple OSes. Annoying.
well all of that could probably be automated with a devd rule so as soon as the device is attached it Does The Right Thing
but someone needs to actually write these rules and test with a bunch of hardware, and then get those rules into base or into a port so someone can just "pkg install bluetooth-devd" or something...

I worked at a company that fired a bunch of recently-hired devs, saw productivity skyrocket, and proudly declared that “we work better with fewer people” etc. In reality, the fired devs had been cleaning up tech debt behind the scenes, so after they were gone tech debt levels skyrocketed and productivity eventually slowed back down to baseline.
I had the displeasure of reading an article in the Harvard student paper by an economics major who said in apparent seriousness that comp sci majors are wasting time on theory classes like “Introduction to Algorithms and their Limitations” when they could be learning REAL skills like prompt engineering.
Algorithms are not useless theory, you unbalanced red-red tree. They’re the entire fucking point of the degree, you empty hash bucket. Go gamble daddy’s money on a startup your buddies thought up last night, you quadratic insert operation

I hope users of these tools are conscious of how the vendors are acquiring their data, and taking pains to avoid the vendors or projects that ignore robots.txt (and such) and go out of their way to avoid being blocked.
These parasites are *worse* than spammers; typically spam is a nuisance, but not something that causes so much damage. It is flat-out unethical what these companies are doing, and equally unethical to support them.

I won't say I told you so about putting Cloudflare on half of the internet being a horrible, horrible idea, but I actually did, so you can say it if you like.
