Just to chime in, copy/paste/search is a gamechanging part of this I didn't notice. I just grabbed an article, copied it to notepad, and searched for something. Found it and dealt with it without having to touch my browser. Very nice.
It’s interesting to me that Trump has so quickly backed off on the threat of using force in Greenland. Someone talked him off the ledge. Maybe the massing European troops raised the stakes enough for his advisors to hesitate. Maybe the generals said they would not attack a NATO member nation (a clearly illegal order). Maybe he never had military support at all, and was talking out of his ass all along. Who knows? The point is, they called his bluff, and he folded like wet napkin. I think people need to learn from this. Calling Trump’s bluffs works, especially when you team up with other communities to call his bluff together.

If you run Linux servers without outside network access, how do you keep them up to date? If a software vendor give you access to a repo to install their multi-package software, how do you do it? Or better, what do you expect from the vendor (but may not get)?

I only ever did that using Gentoo machines which did not have internet connectivity but needed the installation of a few commercial packages (RPM format). We wrote Gentoo ebuilds that would work on a connected machine, run a dry-run of the fetch phase for the packages which would generate a fetch list, run the list on connected machines then copied the downloaded packages to their expected destinations, then did a no-fetch install. Roundabout but it was scriptable.
You have to make a local mirror of course. Rsync down the world and expose it when you're in the DC locally.
github.com/purpleidea/mgmt/ can host this kind of cache pretty easily. We do it for installs/provisioning so you don't need to have internet to deploy the world.
Linux is pretty complete. Most significant updates are security patches and new-device stuff. If these boxes are permanently offline, it's not obvious that Linux updates are going to offer any noticeable benefits and, if things are running fine, there's the risk that an update could break something. So, maybe, just ignore the problem.
@timbray the are not offline. They are just on a private network with no outside access. And it's not about the update it's about installing a new piece of software. and how it would get updated (user visible changes / fixes)
Putting my sysad hat on for a second, what I would want from a vendor ideally is either a package repository (ppa, apt repo, yum repo, etc) that I can enable, which integrates well with vendor-provided packages. What I regularly _get_ is a tarball or a loose binary that I have to install by hand, and the dependencies are my problem.
I do think it's reasonable for vendors to abdicate on the issue of limited/no network access. There are many, many ways to do that.
The usual advice for site admins who are managing devices with limited network access is usually to either set up a package repository that the devices _can_ access, or to set up an installation image that contains all the packages the devices need and to reimage them as needed. Either approach has some pretty significant operational tradeoffs. If devices can be allowed internet access intermittently, things get easier: use vendor repos during those windows.

Pretty big. Their app is a PITA too--had to hand my phone to my partner mid-listen because my phone's cast connection dropped and I couldn't find the play button. They asked for a bunch of feedback on their app a while back, and I kinda hoped they'd fix the accessibility issues, but I didn't chime in because fixing issues of this scale isn't on your users IMO and I didn't want to do more unpaid consulting. Guess it's in prod now and we're stuck with it though, yay us.

@pitermach IT does, but not until the last section. I guess what I'm saying is, I get why the author has put it in the troubleshooting section, but to me, there's nothing really to troubleshoot with FileVault being enabled, and they've explained why. but maybe they should have put it in a disclaimer at the top. I'm coming from a standard user's perspective here who might not even know they've got FileVault enabled and have just stumbled across this article while browsing, do all the steps and get frustrated as to why it's not working. I don't even know if I still have an applevis account to comment haha.

So it turns out that the largest AI datacenter in the world consumes about as much water per year as ~2.5 burger joins (including water consumed in chip production). I heavily overestimated datacenter water consumption (even though I knew most people still heavily overestimated datacenter water consumption, and I underestimated it relative to most people. I also heavily underestimated how much water goes into a single burger.

And the amount of times it says, "let's get this done right once and for all!" is really great, as though it were trying to be a frustrated person. All of these things give it fake realism, but we must not associate an AI thinking this way to it "being a human" - it only does so because we ourselves use these processes when thinking and it's just replicating what it knows.

I encountered a weird setup that a lot of Komplete Kontrol libraries don't play the preview when browsing presets. The presets load fine, but they just don't play the previews. The preview feature is on, and some libraries do play the preview. Is there a fix without redownloading all the libraries with the problems? @FreakyFwoof
Nothing to do with the libraries themselves. That's probably the stupid out-dated NBPL library getting out of sync. Mine also does that, even though it's installed and in the correct place. I haven't been bothered to delete and redownload it. It's the Native Preview library in Native Access. I bet the libraries that don't play are all the old NI libraries. Abbey Road drums, Scarbee libraries etc, etc. Anything pre-2018.
I would, I just don't care enough. It's only a few libraries and I don't use them much anyway, and it will probably break again at some other point anyway.
If you show hidden files and find that the particular library has a .previews folder in the instruments or snapshots folders and doesn't play, that's more of a problem.
It breaks for a lot of people which is why I just gave up trying to keep it fixed. It's 7 gig and I have a slow connection and it's one of those which I just bet will fail installing on Mac because it's an ISO file not DMG. ISO and Mac currently don't go together so don't expect it to work.
Loads of the older libraries are .ISO so if you have to ever reinstall them, it's a bit of a nightmare to do so. I did make a demo explaining how, but it's not for the faint hearted.

@Lprazdnik ahaha I wish! There's a lot of manual refactoring. But what's nice is, I can do my real job while I work and the AI codes something in the background, pause, then get back to it again. What's funny is also using the same AI at work and home to do tasks. Man this world is nuts, should catch up sometime again.
All I ever do in life is mess up phonemes. Maybe no SpeechPlayer updates for a bit until I can solve them. Feeling sad and disheartened. This is never going to work out, formant synthesis is too impossible. Back to work things.
Maybe you think you're messing up because you're trying to do it by yourself, but have you tried looking up papers on phonetics and how formants should be done?
@GoemonIshikawa what gets really hard is that each engine is tuned slightly differently, so even if I could find papers, it might help me better understand the math and relations between all the PF1 to PF6 and CF1 to CF6 + nasal qualities and how they really impact the sound, but it wouldn't give me a magical answer of, "tune this phoneme this way for it to sound good." That tends to just happen by ear and lots of manual, human-assisted tuning.
@GoemonIshikawa hm. I think because formants are resonances of a moving filter, not tones being played. So unlike pitch, formants are broad peaks, not single frequencies, and they overlap too. A vowel isn’t "F1 = 500 Hz" It’s more like "F1 starts at ~650, slides to ~500, widens, then narrows again". A tuner would hate that. So I think it just …is physically different every time, because the tongue is already moving toward the next sound before the current one finishes. And that's what formants try to sort of replicate, but with math.
Man, you're doing something insanely difficult and beating yourself up every time you have a setback. It makes me very sad to see. Remember, you're not obligated and you've done a whole lot in a very short period of time! It's ok if you slow down and live life a bit.

I think I'm stuck on the wheel because people do write in with feedback and suggestions so then I'm like, "wow, what a great suggestion, let's jump right on seeing if we can fix it!" LOL. If I just had the project sitting here by myself that's a different story, but of course that type of feedback is what also makes things essential for tuning, so it's unavoidable.

This question partly motivated by a discussion I was having with someone about "where would one actually advertise?" in relation to the drop in my own business.
THe Tailwind folks are complaining about it on their site (they used it to advertise paid Tailwind features, so it's a significant drop in revenue for them).
This is probably more of a problem for them than for anybody else (LLMs can and do look at docs, but they're effectively "ad blockers" and only give you the information you actually want / need, not what the website owner wants you to see). No idea what the impact is on other sites.
@miki It's not just that LLMs are "ad blockers", but they also seem to strip citations and related work. So for instance, if I had previous put out something interesting like a conference tutorial on some topic, that no longer gets seen (or linked) either.
Yeah, for better and for worse, they give the user exactly what they want, no more and no less. Some consider this as a walled garden, others as a natural extension of fast forward, ad blocking and reader mode. I guess it depends on where you fall on the scale of author's rights versus reader's rights.
Though to be fair, I suspect that many authors will leverage this and find a way to speak to LLMs directly. With enough prompt engineering, you could probably convince an LLM reading your website to tell the user about something you care about. The line between jailbreaking and telling the user something they want to hear is blurry, just like the line between delivering genuinely useful commercial information and manipulation is blurry in advertising. It's a strange world we live in.
What is the anti-AI endgame at this point? It feels like everyone who's anti-AI is just praying for the bubble to burst. Like do you think when it happens that OpenAI is just going to close their doors and say "well we had a good run but lets close it down?" No! What's going to happen is what happens every time a bubble bursts and any smaller AI companies will go under or be absorbed by the few remaining ones and we'll just be left with 2 or 3 companies that control everything, and instead of fostering alternatives and trying to keep up with and help contribute to open stacks that can't be locked behind paywalls, the vast majority of the open-source community has just decided to complain about things changing and hope it doesn't.
