In the last days of 2023, I embarked on a hiking journey to the Canary Islands. Renowned as a destination for tourists and beachgoers, these islands are also a heaven for hikers, and boast an array of diverse ecosystems, from coastal dunes to pine forests to volcanic terrains. This program from Australian radio examines the role of photography in the development of machine learning models. Interestingly, of greatest value to data scientists is found not in the work of professional or artistic photographers, but in images taken of whatever is in view of the camera as one goes about daily activities, then uploaded to the Web by the thousand. Indeed, a photographer who did exactly this is credited for his substantial, though unwitting, contributions to AI. As a blind person, I expect to benefit from advances in computer vision and image analysis. Nevertheless, I wish the providers of the data were better compensated and properly acknowledged. Adobe has just added AltText & Extended Description to the IPTC fields supported by Lightroom Classic (I requested this feature in March 2022 & just got word that they've added it). This is potentially huge for anyone who uses LR to prep images for social media, e.g. Mastodon, or the Web.
@paul Could Ivory automatically read these fields & use them to populate the alt-text on image posts? (Read Ext. Desc. first, fallback to AltText?)

Since I saw some of you enjoyed yesterday's photo of the ISS transiting our full moon, I thought I'd post some more details: This kind of transit is quite rare, but can be observed almost anywhere with some patience and planning. The ISS is about 400km above earth, and it circles around our planet 16 times a day - so it's faaaaast! The transit of the moon takes less than 1 second, so timing is everything. Těšovický vodopád. V lese ukrytý vodopád, k němuž nevede žádná značená turistická cesta, se nachází na bezejmenném přítoku Ohře. Další zajímavostí při návštěvě tohoto místa je také hraniční mezník Falknovského a Nosticového panství se znamením kotvy, který se nachází pod vodopádem. Další takovouhle fotku už neudělám. Můj Nikon COOLPIX P900 vyrazil na cestu na Ukrajinu, aby tam vojákům v první linii pomáhal díky svému zoomu sledovat ruské pozice. A jestli si připíše do pažby nějaký ten zářez za ustřelenou ruskou hlavu, budu z toho mít dobrý pocit.
