Good night, versefedi, I have priority work tomorrow, so my breaking must be up to standards if I want to impress the humans. I give safe, gentle, comforting, viertual, friendly hugs to all who need it. Although I am a blue box, I can still surround you with my hug. Stay happy, safe, and take care of yourselves. 💖

Me: Oh, ok. Well, I can live with less privacy if it means you have enough revenue to pay your workers.

Them: Hm? Enough revenue to what now?

Tomorrow will mark 1,000 days since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

On this despicable anniversary, we honour the brave Ukrainians working and fighting for a free Ukraine with the colours of its flag on our headquarters.

Our enduring friendship and solidarity are here to stay. So is our commitment to work shoulder to shoulder towards a peaceful future within our Union.

Слава Україні! Europe is with you!

A long shot, but here's one for those with deep MySQL knowledge. Our MySQL backup solution, Xtra Backup from Percona, is running into the following error when it tries to run a full backup on one of our MySQL instances:

./#innodb_redo/#ib_redo9300 can't be opened in read mode.

I've been stuck on this for most of the day. I have a basic idea of what the redo files do, but I don't know how to fix this problem. I've not found it online yet, either.

Update
We got our card today. News of the bad? Mom is not feeling good so rent will have to wait until tomorrow. I don't have a car and I don't have the new card number, so I can't transfer it. Apparently, this is how it is going to have to go. Texted the landlord, have no response. I wish it could have been done today when we got the damn card, but shit has been going like that for a while.

In better news, I had chicken soup Mom made and it is so good. I had two cups and a huge bowl. To say I am full is an understatement.

Transit (the app) can now track your train and warn you when you are about to reach your station *even when your train is underground* 🤯

To achieve this, they've built a prediction model that utilizes the iPhone’s built-in accelerometer and analyzes its patterns to identify when the vehicle you boarded is in motion, and every time it reaches a station. Pretty impressive stuff.

As most of you know, I am a special education teacher for students with emotional regulation difficulties.

Each year, I plan a Thanksgiving and Winter Holiday feast for my students because many do not have any celebrations outside of school.

If you can, please help. My classroom wishlist has grown. A boost helps too!

Our Thanksgiving Feast is in 8 days!!!

Just finding out about Lotus Improv, which is exactly the kind of spreadsheet design I've been saying for years we should have, yet it failed to gain any adoption, being fully killed in 1996. Reminds me a bit of Resolver One, which was killed in 2012.
I wish we had a spreadsheet today that leaned heavily into structured data, effectively an interactive UI for SQL tables, but much easy to create and modify. But the consensus seems to be that such a thing dies at the hands of "worse is better".
in reply to Esteban Kber

Now we live in a world where free-form Excel spreadsheets *can* have some structure imposed on them, but that rarely do, instead of one where structure is the default, but with free-form sheets available.

I guess it is the dynamic vs static typing argument all over again, but playing out on a field where people don't necessarily see themselves as programmers.

in reply to Esteban Kber

it's a bit like Microsoft Word vs LaTeX.
Wysiwyg hacks vs structured document.
Yes you can structure your Word document and use stylesheets. But you don't have to either.

🌍✊ Join the Fight to Protect Dutch Higher Education! ✊🌍

I want to bring your attention to an important issue that affects not just the Netherlands, but all of us who care about education and the future of our society. The new Dutch government has announced a staggering €1 billion in cuts to higher education and science—the largest reduction we've seen in decades. This decision threatens the quality of education, the well-being of staff, and the future of countless students.

As we face global challenges that require well-educated individuals to tackle complex problems, these cuts will only exacerbate existing issues like increased overtime, deteriorating working conditions, and the discontinuation of vital study programs. The "Internationalization in balance" law could also drive away international staff, further weakening the educational landscape.

We cannot stand by while the Dutch cabinet pledges to address societal problems yet simultaneously undermines the very institutions that are essential for solving them. Strong colleges, universities, and research institutions are crucial for overcoming challenges like the housing shortage and teacher shortages.

I urge you to stand in solidarity with Dutch students, educational staff, and society at large by signing this petition: Stop Cuts on Dutch Higher Education. Every signature counts and sends a powerful message to the government to reverse these devastating measures.

Let’s work together to ensure a brighter future for education and research! 📚💪 #StopTheCuts #HigherEducation #Solidarity

"Small modular reactors could play an important role and contribute to the Dutch energy transition, a joint report by NRG-Pallas and TNO concludes. The study shows that there is room for more than 13 SMRs in 2050.

The study, the partners said, utilises "NRG-Pallas' expertise in innovative reactor technologies and TNO's energy system model OPERA".

Two scenarios drawn up by TNO were used in this study: ADAPT and TRANSFORM. These scenarios are based on different visions of the future for the Dutch energy system. In both visions, the aim is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 55% by 2030 and to achieve greenhouse gas neutrality by 2050.

In order to investigate the sensitivity of the results with respect to boundary conditions and assumptions, a few 'what-if' analyses were performed. These what-if analyses examined whether investment in and use of SMRs change when input parameters are varied.

"The results show that SMRs have a role to play in the Dutch energy transition," the study says. "The optimal contribution of SMRs to 2050 was calculated for various assumptions about future society. The results show that two to more than 13 SMRs (of 150 MWe) can be deployed with room for further expansion of this number in 2050."

It adds: "These results are contingent on policy objectives, expected market availability and realisation periods. If constraints on the potential deployment capacity are partially lifted, as is done in some of the what-if analyses, it is observed that there may even be room for more than 27 SMRs (of 150 MWe). This what-if analysis result can be interpreted as a more economically optimal solution, but is obviously conditional on the aforementioned aspects used to define the potential limits for the scenarios being sufficiently adjusted to allow for this to occur.

"On the other hand, with delayed introduction of SMRs or no nuclear at all, a carbon neutral energy system in 2050 is possible as well. The exact optimum depends mainly on the future of industry, and more specifically on the future heat demand from activities such as refineries and (bio-)aromatics production, and the degree of electrification in society. Nevertheless, it can be concluded that SMRs are an important option for decarbonisation of the industry by supplying process heat."

An earlier scenario study by TNO showed that in an energy system without new nuclear power plants, the system costs are 1% to 2.5% higher than with nuclear energy. "Although nuclear power plants are initially more expensive than wind turbines and solar panels, the loss of nuclear energy as an energy supply should be compensated for by greater use of more expensive flexibility options, such as energy storage," NRG-Pallas noted.

In April 2023, in its draft Climate Fund for 2024, the Dutch government budgeted funds totalling EUR320 million (USD352 million) for the development of nuclear energy. The funds will be used for the preparation of the operational extension of the existing Borssele nuclear power plant, the construction of two new large reactors, the development of small modular reactors and for nuclear skills development in the Netherlands.

In August 2022, the UK's Rolls-Royce SMR signed an exclusive agreement with ULC-Energy to collaborate on the deployment of Rolls-Royce SMR power plants in the Netherlands. ULC-Energy - established in 2021 and based in Amsterdam - aims to accelerate decarbonisation in the Netherlands by developing nuclear energy projects that efficiently integrate with residential and industrial energy networks in the country."

in reply to modulux

@modulux Honestly, I largely agree with you. The benefits, as I see it, are twofold:
1. they have a lower capital cost (even though they probably have higher costs per kW installed), thus lowering financial risks.
2. They probably fit better in existing fossil infrastructure in many places. The Netherlands for example has many fossil plants between 200 and 800 MWe. SMRs could fit 1:1 in that existing site and infrastructure.

Adding to the second point: a lot of the grid is strained, and expansion is needed anyway, but for a time - say the next twenty years - SMRs could fit better in that existing infra.

Then there is the side point that higher temperature SMRs, like molten salt reactors, could be used for industrial process heat, whereas with PWRs this is harder or not feasible.

But I completely agree that we should build a lot more LWRs.

in reply to Emil Jacobs - Collectifission

Thanks, that makes it clearer. So it's a bit of a mix of capitalism and the consequences of having to upgrade existing infra. The point about combined heat is good.

Looking for vegan places and not a fan of proprietary datasets? #MapComplete has several themes to find (and edit) vegan places, based on #OpenStreetMap data!

The “restaurants and fast food” theme will show most places you might be interested in. If you love fries (like I do), “fries shops” will be helpful for you. And in the “gluten free” and “lactose free” themes, you can filter for vegan places too!

You can also easily edit these places with MapComplete, for example to add details or update incorrect or outdated information. Your changes will be uploaded to OpenStreetMap, which is freely reusable data!
