I had a very strange and scary dream involving my Mini PC. It was apparently opted into running Windows preview builds, although nothing looked any different. Whenever I would switch to a certain synth, the fan would run really high, the audio would sometimes crackle, and it would either reboot or just freeze, but not like a blue screen. I then somehow was able to open some sort of log thing that showed way down at the bottom of this Windows Update page in settings that as part of being in the Windows preview, it was sending 29 gb to Microsoft over the wi-fi by default! I switched the synthesizer again, and immediately it crashed again and did the same thing, even after turning that setting off. I'm guessing I dreamed this because one of my machines had the audio stutter a bit yesterday after the wi-fi temporarily disconnected.

Just finished my 1st audio drama, in 2026, and generally since a long time. Was just around 9h, as it's split in 2 parts and the 2nd part is sadly going to release on april 30th. So what do I do? Get the full audiobook, which will miss the effects and different voices, which I found quite good, though I admit the audiobook narator sounds nice as well, or do I wait, which would kinda disturb the feeling I have for the story now?
Or both lol. In case anyone wonders, it's Fourth Wing 1, but I'm listening in german.

Regardless I need good audio drama/audiobook suggestions, I'm getting into it again and it's great distraction/generally worlds better than scrolling TikTok and similar stuff I used to fill the time with which I now spend listening. And audiobookshelf also makes it fun, the seemless syncing of positions across all devices and some nice additional features like rewind on pause of the clients make it even more enjoyable.

@tardis so on that page there's a "create" button, you press it and a dialog opens. There you click on the select song button, then you can upload from your computer. I think free accounts don't really exist anymore, or they might but they only let you preview. Otherwise it's $1.99 for the first month (unlimited cover credits) then $8.99 after.

Got a Raspberry Pi 5 for some homeserver tasks.

Sadly it seems rather more involved than the earlier models that I was pretty happy with.

Apparently they switched to 'Mini HDMI' which I of course don't have lying around. Luckily the 'Raspberry Pi Imager' utility can build an sd card image with ssh enabled and the wifi password pre-supplied 😊. Icky that it needs root but otherwise works well.

How accessible is Discord in a browser?

We're using it at work (don't ask, Shadow IT), and I'm strongly considering switching to a two-account setup at this point. Especially because their track record on privacy (from your contacts, not in the weird "I don't want personalized ads" sense) is spotty at best.

from a screen reader / non mouse input method standpoint? i have no idea.

from a "how similar is it to the desktop app" standpoint? it's literally identical. with the exception of a few features the browser sandbox prohibits, like push to talk when the browser window isn't focused, there is literally 100% feature parity.

discord desktop is an electron app. it's a website in a box already. why maintain two frontend codebases when you don't have to?

Same Brailab sound, smoother reading. This one feels really good. πŸ˜„ And without @erion doing that initial driver work it wouldn't have happened. Now Brailab reads as it did in my childhood, with the same low intonation during long sentences, it's such a joy to use now that the Wrapper works well.

Flexvoice was a hibryd system based on machine learning and formant synthesis. The newly developed inverse formant synthesizer has made it possible to describe and store the speech elements recorded from human speech with compressed phonetic data. Speech was synthesized by the formant synthesizer software. Flexvoice was able to speak in a variety of voices, also whispering and hoarse voices. Your display name is not the place for random statements like f* this party pro this ASSOCIATION etc. I don't give a shit about that when I want to read your post. It's more common with german people to have that as it seems. Same for emojis or different formating etc, just use normal letters. My screenreader sometimes reads all letters like they where in seperated capitals because you have some weird formating you think looks cool, or says question mark question mark between each letter. Just type, on your normal keyboard, type your name, your pseudonyme, but nothing else. Just gonna ignore that crap from now on, probably mute. Wastes time.

Another form of Facebook post in particular is really giving me the shits lately and it relates to a previous post I made regarding the use of AI.
The kind of post I'm talking about here is the really inspiring post about someone that is shared by everybody.
You can tell it's an AI post because it often starts with something like, it was 3.37 in the morning and 35 seconds when the old man took his last breath inside the ice cream parlour.
The posts then go on to talk about what an amazing person they were, the things they do just get better and better and better and at the end you often get these annoying fucking moral messages.
Mr Blake did not succeed because he had an IQ of 512, mr Blake succeeded because he found the inspirational courage to fight through the horrible brain freeze and tooth pain.
So fucking irritating.

If I were a digital rights activist, I would see this time as a golden opportunity.

Creating and distributing this imagery has never been quicker or easier. All one has to do is reply to an image posted by someone on X with a mention of Grok and a prompt. This feature was restrained recently but people who pay an $8 subscription to X can still do it. In the Privacy Guides article by Em, the French, Portuguese, Spanish, Italian and Irish governments (amongst many others) were in full support of Chat Control. As far as I can tell, prominent politicians, Prime Ministers and official government accounts from these countries are still posting on X.

Is there anything we can do to point out the hypocrisy? Or have the abuse machine that is Grok sanctioned and fined? And - this is key - use this horrible incident to push politicians to FINALLY quit X? It's about time.

Thanks to @Tamasg and his SoftVoice TTS Speak window, I just created something really silly and stupid. The SoftVoice variant The Fly reading some gibberish/keysmash text. It sounds really weird! Actual text is in the alt text.

But tl;dr we're open to feedback if it is actually usable/reasonable right now.
