@tuban_muzuru getting the LLM to write the commit message is something I really appreciate. It's so much better than me, and writing good commit messages takes me out of my flow. LLMs work best with human-in-the-loop iterative approaches, the problems really start to show when rather than helping you code, you try to command them t code instead of you.
Deming would be concerned about LLMs lengthening the feedback loop, iterating on specs and verification rather than code, trying to get quality by adding inspection, trying to specify-in learning, etc, he would for sure be extremely wary of agents.
Early on with Bard, I had to quit hoarding bits of Rust functionality. If there are to be any "gains" by using an LLM, it's really useful to write a spec. Maybe two. Implementation then comes into focus.

As I just came out of a meeting with 16 people who use Apple devices daily and all assumed there's no undo, here's a tech* tip that a lot of people appear to need:
Undo on 🍎 iOs: Do a three-finger tap and you'll get a toolbar with undo, redo and copy functionality.
edit: yes you can also shake the device to undo. Apple is currently breaking that functionality. Anyhow, for an interesting experience try to shake your laptop and see what it does!
The other day, I accidentally managed to pay off a credit card in full... twice, which it shouldn't have even let me do in the first place. So now I'm trying to figure out how to reverse one of those transactions. Very exciting.
First, it correctly identifies that I made two payments a few minutes apart. GREAT! It then asks me which one of the two transactions to cancel. Doesn't matter, they're identical. It insists, so I'm like, OK, just cancel the last one.
It then tells me that a "pay later transaction" can't be canceled. When I pointed out that it wasn't one of those, it tells me to contact the credit card issuer.

I did something similar recently. I was trying to pay two credit cards. one I owed 10 bucks on, the other I owed 1500 or so. Except I paid them backwards. paid 10 bucks on the one I owed 1500 and paid $1500 on the one I owed 10 bucks.
UPDATE: One of the company owners (whom I've known for many years and is a good person) has asked to speak with me in about fifteen minutes. I've agreed. I'm curious to see what he has to say. I'll update this post after the call.
Yesterday I lost a client. And I couldn't be happier about it.
It's a long-standing client, but the management changed a few months ago. On Monday, they requested an emergency intervention, which I handled immediately.
On Tuesday (yesterday, evening), they asked for a non-urgent enhancement to be closed by Wednesday evening. I explained that due to various reasons (including urgent family matters), I wouldn't be able to finish the task before Friday. That's when the lecturing started: they told me they set tight deadlines even for non-emergencies because "that's the proper way to do things", and anyone working with them must respect them without exception.
I requested a video call to clarify. I explained that the work requires nearly a full day and that I simply couldn't close it by Wednesday. Even the physical time required to copy the data exceeded their deadline. But the new management believes that by applying pressure, you can overcome anything. Even the laws of physics.
Their response was sarcastic: "Our requests take priority, even if you are dying". I smiled and reiterated that I had no other way. "We will therefore have to find a new consultant who respects our timing", they said.
My response: "Okay. Our agreement expired on 31st December. I was waiting for a renewal, but it never arrived. Meaning, I have no legal obligations toward you. You have the data, the passwords, everything. Have a great day.".
The manager, annoyed and failing to understand the implications, replied: "Fine, we’ll look for someone younger with fewer family ties to manage.".
This morning, the phone rang. It was the manager, asking me to reconsider. His tone remained contemptuous, so I told him my decision was final. Two minutes later, I got a call from their biggest client - the one responsible for over 50% of their revenue. They had been notified I was leaving and informed the company they would also leave if I was no longer the one supervising their machines.
I called the manager back, friendly, trying to see if they were willing to change their attitude - to move from peremptory orders to requests between human beings. He started talking about "suing for damages" if they lost their main client because of me (to be clear: I am not taking that client for myself).
I don’t know how this story will evolve, but right now, I'm just enjoying a breath of fresh air outside my window.
@Bri FastSM feedback/bugs, if wanted I can put them on GH later: 1. Lists, if I understand the principe correctly, when an account is put into a list it no longer appears on the home TL, that is not the case, I still see new posts by accounts I put into a list there. Have I misunderstud the feature/need to configure something else? 2. Will it remember the TL position at some point? Beeing able to continue reading from where I left of on the Home TL and lists would be quite cool.

Ok so apparently you need to enable that for each list, FastSM doesn't support that yet as it seems. Did enable it from Pachli but reloading the home timeline still shows posts by persons which should only be on a list. Not sure wether the API just doesn't respect that when fedging posts for the home tl or where the issue is there.
In Pachli (and also on the official web apps) you can (on a per list level in thhe settings of the certain list) disable thhat posts of people you have in the list get shown on your home TL. How exactly that works and if the API respects it, not really sure. But apparently it's possible somehhow. If there is nothing official to find about thhat we could maybe mention thhe Pachli dev, I'm sure they can say something about it.
@johann I've added the "Hide list members from home timeline" checkbox to the list creation/editing dialog. Feel free to check it out and let me know if it works when the build builds.
1, no, currently the stock behavior of lists is not to modify your home timeline at all. I can add a setting to not receive posts in home from people in open list timelines, though. 2, no, I currently have no intention of adding any kind of post caching. I could at least implement home timeline position syncing with the Mastodon API, though.
There are now sufficiently many different examples of Erdos problems that have been resolved with various amounts of AI assistance and formal verification (see github.com/teorth/erdosproblem… for a summary) that one can start to discern general trends.
Broadly speaking, we now see an empirical tradeoff between the level of AI involvement in the solution, and the difficulty or novelty of that solution. In particular, the recent solutions have spanned a spectrum roughly describable as follows:
1. Completely autonomous AI solutions to Erdos problems that are short and largely follow a standard technique. (In many, but not all, of these cases, some existing literature was found that proved a very similar result by a similar method.)
2. AI-powered modifications of existing solutions (which could be either human-generated or AI-generated) that managed to improve or modify these solutions in various ways, for instance by upgrading a partial solution to a full solution, or optimizing the parameters of the proof.
3. Complex interactions between humans and AI tools in which the AI tools provided crucial calculations, or proofs of key steps, allowing the collaboration to achieve moderately complicated and novel solutions to open problems.
4. Difficult research-level papers solving one or more Erdos problems by mostly traditional human means, but for which AI tools were useful for secondary tasks such as generation of code, numerics, references, or pictures.
Just in case anyone has any idea before I start digging for instructions, does anybody have any idea why my television refuses to operate in picture "Game" mode when it has Bluetooth audio output selected? As in, because it's the display for my Switch and gaming PC, I have it in "Game" mode rather than, say "Standard" or "Sport" or "Cinema" (I've no idea what any of those really do, but the picture looks best in "Game" mode to me anyway) but it I connect headphones, it forcibly switches to "Standard" and won't allow "Game" to be re-selected.

Improve accessibility in ALL your features, and we -blind users- will choose alternatives much, much more. We are the most vulnerable computer users, and most controllable, because alternatives care less about our needs. Just 12 months ago, TutaMail via web was nearly the best in accessibility, except for the captcha you then solved. But now it's a complete disaster.

Please do not recommend Brave software. They are strong promoters of all major tech hype scams such as crypto and genAI, and the leadership is overtly transphobic. Regardless if you are demicrosofting due to the copilot bloatware or due to Trump's control of the platforms, Brave is a terrible alternative in both cases.

Do you ever actually test the privacy claims of the browsers you recommend? I’ve noticed some on that list weren’t privacy orientated when you first mentioned them. Seems like you go off vibes rather than any quantifiable metrics…
I think he means @Vivaldi. My main concern is that it is not fully open source, so the code cannot be independently audited. It also lacks some anti‑fingerprinting and full state partitioning features that other privacy-focused browsers offer; for example, Brave (also Chromium-based) ships stronger defaults. Vivaldi makes various direct connections and includes telemetry and partner integrations unless you manually change settings.
Overall it feels more like a customizable Chromium than a privacy-first browser, so I would not recommend it. If you want a Chromium option, consider @brave, but like Firefox you should configure it for stronger privacy.
With every post you make, I become more convinced not to subscribe to your products and to recommend this to others as well.
Is it reasonable for you to nominate your product, which is still under development and not yet complete, and leave Protondrive? Your impartiality and credibility do not exceed 0%. You do not have real criteria for recommendation and nomination.
I’d also recommend mobile browsers like Cromite, a Chromium-based browser without Google with privacy and security tweaks.
I’d also suggest IronFox as an alternative to standard Firefox, but note that some Gecko-based browsers have had sandboxing and site‑isolation shortcomings on Android in the past.
EDIT: I forgot to mention Brave. Many people say it’s a good browser for desktop and mobile, but I have reservations about the company.
Sadly, there is no viable alternative for GitHub. I know of Codeberg, GitLab, and Bitbucket, but they don't work the way I need as an alternative. Also, Proprietary/scam/Chromium software (Vivaldi, Brave) shouldn't be listed, and ProtonMail, ProtonDrive, ProtonVPN, and other Proton services are missing.
