Considering migrating all my virtual machines to UTM on Mac OS some day. Sigh. Not sure why the bug with VMWare Fusion is back, where with VoiceOver, the machine will not start up. Of course this is a bug returned from the past, because it existed earlier on in the Mac OS 15 days. Then it got fixed, and life was happy again. Not so much anymore, after Mac OS 26, it has returned. If you have started up a virtual machine with VoiceOver on, and then noticed the "start up" button become dimmed again and not move to "suspend" instead but back to pressable, you're experiencing that bug. The only option is, and I'm not kidding, is to press the button, turn VoiceOver off right after (at a split second) and hope that its presence didn't register within your VMWare App.
Look y'all, I know there's a lot of news, world, political posts around. I've been asked, but the truth is that I won't ever boost or really post these, unless it is severe on a global impact. It's not that I want to bury my head in the sand or ignore it. Nor is it that I'm actively choosing to ignore it at all on the basis of privilege to a modern world. I respect those who post such content, because it, along with my news sources, helps round me out of any echo chambers I may myself be stuck in a bit. For my own content though, I like to keep things tech related, around accessibility, disability (Blind/ deaf/ autism / ETC) or queer spaces, because those passions will always matter more than any crazy thing a president does or the divisions created, until those things do impact such areas. When that happens, we protest, prepare, make opinions loud. I'd gladly take part in community public activities that way. My goal on here though is to inform others and maybe contribute some useful things to the spaces I belong in, like web accessibility, while I am able to. So, that's that. Perhaps one of those posts I'll end up pinning to my profile for now so it is well known.

Ich hab' das mal in einem Ferienhaus in Dänemark gehabt, mit einigen Freunden. Und das war in der Tat mit der entspannteste Winterurlaub, den ich je hatte.
Es war verschneit, es war ruhig, es wurde schon damals Silvester kaum bis gar nicht geböllert... Das war echt herrlich dort damals. Und nur mit netten Leuten da gewesen.
Schade, dass Castro nicht Teil des Testfelds war. Den finde ich nämlich mit am übersichtlichsten. Und er bietet nämlich das Springen zwischen Kapiteln.

@bdorer Das ist überhaupt keine schlechte Wahl, war mein allererster Podcatcher. Aber ich finde die Übersichtlichkeit von Castro ganz charmant. Jonathan Mosen hatte im Living Blindfully ganz früh, 2020 irgendwann, auch eine ganze Episode zu Castro gemacht, und vieles davon gilt auch jetzt noch.

One coworker -- who I'll call Xavier -- does everything through LLMs. He's the kind of developer that managers who have never been programmers adore: 3000 lines of code per day.
I just realized that Xavier cannot read code, even code that he submits for review. He "understands" code by running it against test files and seeing whether results are reasonable. He can only say what the code does, not what causes it to behave in a way.
But that has several problems. An obvious first issue is that if a problem doesn't show up in the test file, then it will never be fixed. A less obvious issue is that his code is brittle and it generalizes very poorly.
Because Xavier doesn't read code, he has a very tough time imagining "What might go wrong?" And because he relies on the LLM, he misses very broad solutions, like using well-established libraries that solve dozens of problems at once.
Programmers who dive deep are still very, very useful.
De QR code van onze Colruyt Xtra kaart die ik in #catima had werkte niet meer aan de kassa. En inderdaad, als ik ze vergelijk met de code in de xtra app dan is ze verschillend.
No problemo dacht ik, even opnieuw instellen.
Maar de content die ik scan van de xtra app QR code is dezelfde als ik in catima had, en als ik met een andere tool een QR code genereer met wat ik scan ziet die er ook anders uit, dus het ligt niet aan catima.
Even een quick check, op welke Catima versie zit je? Een nieuwe feature in 2.41.0 om automatisch UTF-8 barcodes te detecteren is niet helemaal goed gegaan maar gefixed in 2.41.4. Dus kaarten in versies 2.41.0 - 2.41.3 van Catima kunnen mogelijk minder goed scanbaar zijn op sommige plaatsen. Als je net op een van de buggy versies zit zou dat ook het issue kunnen zijn (sorry daarvoor).
edit: met 2.41.4 gescanned, code wordt nu gedetecteerd als ISO-8859-1 en ziet er anders uit dan vorige keer (in catima), maar nog altijd anders dan de code die ik scande
Maar dat ligt eerder aan iets wat Colruyt doet, weet alleen niet wat en hoe.
Zal binnenkort weten of het werkt, als ik nog eens winkel :)))

Aber in den 90ern und 00ern waren die Gehwege in Hamburg doch wirklich noch zuverlässiger von Schnee geräumt als heute, oder? Oder bin ich einfach ein grumpy old Man geworden, der denkt „früher war alles besser“?
Ich vermute, der Eindruck kann damit zu tun haben, dass früher ja auf Gehwegen mit Salz gestreut werden durfte, was inzwischen verboten ist. Man hat also einfach die Gehwege wie die Straßen mit Salz gestreut. Die waren dann natürlich freier, aber z. B. Hundepfoten haben das überhaupt nicht vertragen. Ich erinnere mich an mehrere Pflegesessions mit meinem damaligen BFH wegen dieser Problematik.
@marcozehe aber doch nicht mehr in den 90ern??? Mein Eindruck ist auch, dass das Räumen zuverlässiger geklappt hat. Gestern festgestellt: bei meinem Sohn in Wilhelmsburg: gut geräumt - bis zur S-Veddel, da nicht. Bei uns: teilweise. Glaube, der eine Laden bei uns unten hat selber vir dek Block geräumt - es ist hier nur unser Abschnitt frei.
@FrauNaja Die Verkehrsbehörde hat gestern das Streuen mit Salz auf Geh- und Nebenwegen bis 21.01. wieder erlaubt, so zu lesen im Newsletter "Elbvertiefung" der zeit Hamburg von heute. Ich kann nur sagen, dass mein Hund, den ich zwischen 2002 und 2011 hatte, gerade in den Anfangsjahren definitiv im Winter desöfteren Probleme mit rissigen Ballen wegen Salz hatte. Und ja, manche Eigentümer vergessen anscheinend, dass sie auch eine Räumpflicht der Gehwege vor ihren Gebäuden haben.

První zapnutí Apple TV? Chceš nastavit pomocí iPhonu — prostě ho přiložíš a nic dalšího neřešíš.
Pak už jen nainstalovat Zwift, přihlášení řešené přes iPhone, hesla pohodlně z Bitwardenu, žádné ťukání na dálkovém ovladači.
Apple TV jsem chtěl hlavně kvůli aplikaci Zwift pro chytrý trenažér. Na Android TV Zwift není. Zrcadlení z Androidu do TV sice jde, ale obraz se seká nebo úplně zamrzne. Zkoušel jsem i USB-C → HDMI kabel, jenže ten telefon vysaje hned baterku.Fairphone to ještě jakž takž zvládne — dvě hodiny dá.S Pixelem bych byl rád za hodinu. Výsledek? Za pět minut od zapnutí jsem seděl na kole. 🚴♂️ #zwift
Tady bych se asi hodně vztekal na výrobce, že nemá appku na Android TV. Zvlášť když má appku na Android. Jinak zkušenost s Apple TV nemám, ale spárování Google TV (Chromecast) s Google Home bylo taky naprosto seamless.

Tym samym jakiekolwiek pisanie mija się z celem, bo ani nie wiem czy do kogokolwiek dotrę (wygląda jakbym wszyscy nagle mnie wyciszyli), ani nie wiem, czy ktokolwiek zobaczy, że coś komentuję - więc po co komentować. Ewentualnych odniesień tutaj - też nie zobaczę, bo musiałbym siedzieć i śledzić jakieś reakcje. Tyle czasu (ani potrzeby) to ja nie mam. Ponieważ nie wiem co nie działa i jak sobie z tym poradzić - mam to w dupie, poczekam aż się naprawi. Albo pójdę na inną instancję, serwer czy jak to się tam nazywa. O ile będę umiał oczywiście:)

This is in relation to that warning I received this morning. To make a long story short, it seems that some people have been offended by some of my posts, and rather than just blocking me or unfollowing me and moving on, they reported me. At no time did I personally insult anyone, promote violence or illegal activities, threaten anyone, etc. I respect the administrators for letting me know about this, and said that I wouldn't post such things in the future. They have every right to do what they did, or even to ban me, since it is their instance and I agreed to follow their rules. I must make that very clear.
However, I am seeking a less restrictive environment. I honestly didn't think I needed one, since most of my posts are about animals, science, technology, etc. But if I can't share an opinion, even a strongly-worded one, without receiving a warning just because some people were offended, this is probably not a great match for me. It's worth noting that I constantly see posts (from other instances) full of obscenities, negative opinions about politicians, the rich, corporations and their heads, users of various operating systems, etc.
Anyway, I would prefer to stay on Mastodon because it's fully accessible, and I would like an instance with a large number of characters (this one is 16,000). If it helps, I am not a gamer, programmer, activist, don't follow politics, etc. I certainly don't want to join a place full of hate, but I do want to join one where I am free to be myself. For now, enjoy the completely wholesome posts with no more personal opinions about anything except opera, though I'll probably limit those too, in case I don't like a given singer.

@FreakyFwoof At first, I thought it would be fine, since the person who runs this also runs Friendica, where I have another account. But rule 1 gives ample opportunity for people to say they're offended by harmless jokes, my views on the singular they, etc. Obviously, I do not target people or deliberately insult them. But considering what happened here, I don't want more trouble. Only two posts were shown, but others were reported, and I'm not sure what they were. Maybe, something like "modern people give me a headache", "why does that need a content warning", or "many people today dress badly". I have no idea. These are just guesses. But they are also simply opinions.
Well the instance I'm writing from has 2K character limit and nothing I've ever said has gotten flagged and I've said some angry stuff over the years. Not hate speech none of that, but stuff has pissed mee off and I haven't cared to sensor it.

Under no circumstances should volunteers in the FOSS community ever be placed in a position that forces them to bend over large corporations, even if it hurts the user experience. Besides, the ones who are actually hurting users is the corporations by making it hard for everyone.
This is also true with Fedora's hostility towards proprietary drivers. This kind of hostility should be encouraged. As a community, we should collectively shame entities that push proprietary garbage as a dependency on Linux, so long it doesn't harm security. vt.social/users/trafotin/statu…

Except you can add `/var/lib/flatpak/exports/bin` to your $PATH. This way, you can type `com.example.Application` in your terminal, dmenu, everywhere. Also if you aren't using completions and insist on doing everything in the terminal, you have bigger problems.
Whenever I browse through the web, I find many “tips and tricks” from various blog writers, YouTubers and others who recommend users to take steps that either they aren’t supposed to, or have better alternatives.
proprietary drivers may be bad and all, but if the situation is the driver doesn't work right with Flatpak, that sounds like a valid reason why the person wouldn't use Flatpak, no? "That doesn't work for me", not "volunteers should bend over".
@bugaevc hm, I suppose I phrased it ambiguously, sorry. It was meant to be in the sense of "Flatpak is bad because ..." But yes, if they simply didn't use Flatpak because their hardware worked poorly, then that's completely fair - same reason why I would probably not use Fedora if I were an NVIDIA user.
@bugaevc I'll kindly disagree with you here. Considering both AMD and Intel can write drivers which doesn't infringe on any patents and doesn't expose any of their secret sauce (AMD Catalyst and AMDGPU are completely different codebases), NVIDIA is the only one who acts like this and creates a special firmware to cripple their cards so open drivers can't enable the whole GPU.
NVIDIA revised hardware to be able to lock them down further while AMD changed hardware to unlock it.
@bayindirh I think you misunderstood @bugaevc's comment. They're stating from the perspective of a user who's negatively impacted by the situation, where they have no choice but to use the inferior option because their hardware doesn't work with the superior option.
@Jage this one has an on screen keyboard interface if you don't have access to a hardware keyboard, for starters. It also has the ability for you to remap hardware modifiers to other modifiers, I.E. remap right alt to insert. It also lets you change your TTS settings, which I'm not sure if Narwall did or not it's been forever. You can save machine profiles. Talkback accessibility actions are fully supported. More that I'm forgetting
@Jage it's basically the same as my iOS NVDARC app, minus a few things that Talkback/Android doesn't support or that I haven't figured out how to do yet.
@Aryan I'm annoyed. Because while this does work, it's never going to be as smoothe as iOS. Talkback just doesn't have the same level of integration that VO does for certain things.
@Aryan accessibility scroll gestures and Magic Tap. The iOS app has it so that you can perform page scrolling gestures and send different keys that you can configure. I spent about 2 hours trying different things to make this work with Talkback and came up with nothing.
i will look into these and let you know if i find anything, but it would've been better if i myself had used features like this, it would have let me get better context.
wow, this is so awesome, might fire up the S22 just to install this on it and check it out for sure. Super great work on creating this, this is going to liberate me so much from my desktop when traveling.
@Dennislong82 I don't have a page or anything available for it yet, as it's in early stages. Suffice it to say that NVDARC is a control app for NVDA Remote on Android and iOS.
I'm not going to start because, if I do, I will just go on and on and it'll get boring. I'm just going to say two things as shortly as I can. 1. I've been bugging people to update Narwhal, including one guy who has been good enough to put up with me here. The fact that I no longer have to do this and annoy people because all the work is done is beyond wonderful. 2. It works. I mean of course it does, you made it, but it does work. I'm sure I'll find issues and report them later. Note that I am using it on a very old phone, the Smartvision 3 running Android 11. It does work on that phone.
I've put this on two devices, as I said, a smartvision 3 running Android 11 and a Pixel running Lineage (Android 15). As for the SV, the speech and touch stuff seems to be unbreakable. Say all works with eloquence having run through a few book chapters. There are no pauses. Basically, I just can't make speech stop or command stop sending properly from the screen/the arrows. What doesn't work is the accessibility service. First, it didn't tell me about the service, I was hoping it would check whether it was enabled and, if not, say "your NVDARC service isn't available, sending hardware keyboard commands will not work, tap here to go enable it. Once you've enabled it, hit f11 in the application to forward keystrokes". I didn't need that myself only because you mentioned the accessibility service in passing. Anyhow, when I went and enabled it in accessibility settings, it said it was on. However, hitting f11 on the USB keyboard got nothing. I am still able to navigate the device, and still unable to send keystrokes directly to the remote machine. I can still tap/enter on any of the keys on the screen, and get those keys sent, but sending directly from the keyboard doesn't work. I may say that I have turned off Narwhal, Kapsys' own thing, and every other accessibility service except talkback. Is there a way to log what is going on or anything I can do to troubleshoot?
@techsinger How interesting. I might have to do some more testing here on my end for that, because others are saying they're having issues. Does this not work on one or both of your devices?
The Lineage machine is having a few more issues though I'm pleased to say that the service is working, at least it's forwarding keystrokes. First, though the service is working, TB is still capturing alt+everything. Alt+enter, for example, gets sent to the computer to grab properties, which is great, but it also taps whatever I'm on in the interface. Both TB and NVDARC seem to be receiving the keystrokes. Obviously, with most keystrokes, this doesn't matter, but when the key is a TB command, it does. Again, say all stops after a single sentence with Vocalizer and Dectalk. I am not able to use Eloquence on this thing at the moment, but hope to at some point. With both Vocalizer and DT, the response when typing is very slow indeed. I'm comparing it to the iOS responsiveness, which is quite good, in my respectful view. It's as if I'm sending sound over Sonobus/Teamtalk/Soundwire over the same network. Responsiveness on the SV3 is significantly better. If I may ask, what are you using yourself as a device? Also, do you think, from your experience designing it, that lower end but modern devices are going to help in terms of responsiveness? Again, thanks for all your work. These are teething troubles, but the thing has to have teeth to get teething troubles, and this thing definitely has teeth.
Been reviewing Spanish with duolingo. Of course they now have an AI conversationalist that you call on the phone. I'm ahead in my knowledge for lots of things, but I'm getting to a point in lessons where I need to follow there ordering. In today's call with Lilly, the stoner girl that knows how to speak Spanish, I threw some complex words and ideas at her to see if she would keep me at the level of my lessons. Turns out she sounds like a stoner, but when she asked me how I was and then I said I was tired. Somehow we got onto the topic of what I like to do before bed and I told her I liked reading. Then we went all Spanish crazy and talked about scifi and fantasy books we liked. Impressive for those that need to practice Spanish conversation.
@jakobrosin They are better than they used to be. It's hard to do timed challenges because it takes forever to select words that are out of place. You select the word, hold your finger on the screen for a bit and continue. You still have to kind of figure out if a word is selected or not. For the most part though, xax
@jakobrosin i've done courses / material in Spanish, I've taken lots of Spanish in school. I also did a good bit in Esperanto because why not, and I had a neighbor who spoke Swahili so I tried that as well. Might try Chinese or something and use my braille display to learn braille in Chinese. Simplified Chinese is phonetic.
