My hyperfixation of the moment is getting 10Gb networking in my apartment.
My in-apartment build+backup server has 10Gb Ethernet as does my new laptop dock.
I also have two systems with 2.5Gb Ethernet, so I want a switch that has all that and a few extra ports for future expansion.
I thought fiber for 10Gb would be difficult, but it looks like it's end user friendly now? I'd just have to buy a switch with SFP+ ports and plug in all the pieces, huh!

telnetd server invokes /usr/bin/login (normally running as root) passing the value of the USER environment variable received from the client as the last parameter.
If the client supply a carefully crafted USER environment value being the string "-f root", and passes the telnet(1) -a or --login parameter to send this USER environment to the server, the client will be automatically logged in as root bypassing normal authentication processes
I've been messing around with this FAstSM client today. I like it. Needs a bit of work, but I mean it's new so that's obvious, but I think once it gets more updates it's gonna be a good client.
@Bri I wouldn't be surprised if the developer started charging us out the ass for it. Like all the greedy developers for accessible apps do. I mean come on. I live in my parents basement, and I'm 50 something. Do you really think I can afford all these ridiculous insane charges for what these greedy developers charge? I mean, I already have huge Xbox game purchase bills to pay. I don't need this on top of everything else!

Okay, I finally decided to check out what everyone is on about and try Braille screen input on my IPhone. I definitely needed to look for and read some instructions, since I needed to know how to calibrate it, and how to enter a space, and how to erase the last character that I entered. Anyhow, as an experiment, I went into Notes and tried typing "The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog" with touch typing and then with Braille screen input, timing myself. Took me around 40 seconds touch typing and around 35 seconds with BSI. I might be able to do BSI faster if I practiced some. With touch typing, I feel like I'm slowed down waiting for Voiceover to tell me if I, in fact, typed the correct key.
I’d be much slower. I haven’t typed Braille input since I was using the Braille N Speak 35 years ago. I really have to think about what dot combinations equal each letter and punctuation.
@Thumper1964 I haven't typed Braille input much in a long time, either, so I'm a little out of practice, and I needed to think about it a bit, too, but I wanted to experiment and time myself with it.

@dodecahedron I... do not. I do have a bunch of battery banks, a laptop that lasts pretty much a full day on it's internal battery, and all three U.S. mobile providers though. So, if one breaks, maybe one of the others will not. Then I can be online, low power, and cold.

Hey Doug. Unrelated to midnight oil, but I'd love your recommendation on a pocket AM/FM radio if you know of any. My old radio shack special is finally dying after over 20 years of service.
Price isn't really an object unless the radio is like a thousand bucks. My important needs are clear reception, and preferably an analogue dial. I had my pocket radio out at the game last weekend, and I had to grab the antenna with both hands to pretty much turn myself into a grounded receiver. it's time to upgrade.
@lerven OK, when you say pocket, do you mean as in fits in a shirt pocket? And yeah, it's hard to find analog radios that are decent anymore. But I'll start doing some checking.

stereo FM is pretty important since I had gotten a radio, but it was mono which meant I only got audio out of one year. Weather band would be cool, but if I don't have one it wouldn't be the end of the world.
@lerven If you don't mind digital, I'd recommend the C.Crane CC Pocket portable. It has built-in speaker and also can play audio through stereo headphones. It's AM, FM, NOAA weather radio. FM sensitivity is improved when headphones or supplied wire antenna are attached. For its size, it's quite sensitive on all bands and is quite selective, as well. 5 memory presets each band. Tune in the desired frequency, press and hold memory button until you hear beep. Selectable AM filtering to improve selectivity by pressing 1 and 3 buttons to toggle through options. Tuning is by up/down buttons, 10KHZ AM, can't remember FM steps. 75 hours battery life claimed on two AA batteries. $74.95 on Amazon. It's definitely a good stadium or arena use. If you don't mind the digital and lack of tuning knob, it's a good choice for a small compact portable. Comes with ear buds and wire FM antenna. Want more recommendations?
Trace shortcuts in the Windows File Explorer. I'm not sure when these were added. Tested on Windows 11 25H2. Control+windows+shift+l: produces a notification that a trace log is being generated, followed by a second one when the log finishes that has an option to open Feedback Hub to submit it. Control+windows+shift+t: produces a notification that an error occured while getting a trace.

What made me decide on a settings panel? Honestly, the consensus on the LegacyPitch is very, very mixed. I see that there's plenty of people who like the ESpeak style intonation, while others don't. So then I realized I can ship the packs with it off by default and people can toggle it somehow. Hmm. But how. It's going to be real good. Comboboxes are exposed in voice settings, but then you also have the choice to edit numeric values in a pack via the panel. At least, that's where this is headed.

I quoted pretty frequently on Twitter, and now that Mastodon finally supports it, and I finally have a Windows client that does as well, I'll be doing more of it here. It's also great to be able to properly read quoted posts from others.
If "apt install" tells you "after this installation, XX GB additional disk space will be used" – that means that YOU SHOULD LOOK if that's available. Because, APT DOES NOT – it simply … well, stops working when the disk is full 🤦♂️

(EDIT: it was `apt` in my case, not `apt-get`. But such a thing simply should not happen at all.)
@SamantazFox So did I, which is why I didn't check. But then, who'd have thought installing a graphics driver would require more than half of the system partition (here: I tried to install ROCm/AMDGPU on a test machine, which required "25 GB (!!) additional disk space)…
Checking disk space must be complicated. Package dependencies are easier… 🙊 💨
@SamantazFox it might not be much easier than package dependencies. Since the files might go into different partitions, it's not trivial to know if you have enough space. For most installations checking the `/` partition would be enough, but then apt should have some heuristics to avoid guessing when the partition setup is more complicated than usual.
@SamantazFox i wonder if it even can do that. Since some package might install to /opt or installs stuff at .local when and if you have a separate home partition if would have to check all of that.
@nachtpfoetchen exactly the point here. But then I'd expect the tool (apt) to consider the worst case: all of those going to the smallest place. If that's not clear at that point, ASK: "your root partition just has BB GB free. You're sure that fits?" That way, one would at least have an indicator.
I mean, the usual places stuff goes to is either below /usr, /var, /boot, or (some cases) /opt (ignoring the few bytes for /etc here). Check where those are, check matched partitions. @SamantazFox
@SamantazFox hmm i had it often that i wanted to install a new kernel version and it didn’t fit and i had to remove omd kernels with apt autoremove first. Then it would complain pretty often. I think the only thing that could solve this would be metadata in every package telling how much space it needs and where.
@daniel Oops… sorry, was still in the fixup shenanigans, and most likely had the very same question on my mind: would it have made a difference? I mean, "cli stability", yeah – but SUCH a thing should simply not happen.
