Here's an effect plugin that separates voice, voice reverb, and ambient noise into three separate channels with controls to mute, solo, or adjust the volume of each. And I'm glad you regret nothing. Honestly, it's interesting. I, too, use Eleven Labs for fun stuff kinda like that, but my stuff is very slightly less silly. I've discovered that I am kind of obsessed with the way it gets context most of the time, so I tend to write all sorts of stories that aren't necessarily quite that silly just because I want to hear it read them. Rather, they chose features that made sense to them as indicators.
These were not even indicators of fake papers, but rather indicators of non-response to a survey —which of course is a very different thing than authorship of a fake paper.

It is absolutely not the authors' burden of proof to demonstrate that their science can be trusted when the criteria used to question their work are (1) their email address and (2) the lack of international collaborators.
And then there's the survey they used to "validate" their hopeless instrument.
How would you respond if you received this from some random account?
As a misinformation researcher, I get all sorts of politically motivated harassment that looks a lot like this. Last thing I'm going to do is give them contacty information they could look up themselves for my university president, dean, HR people, etc.
To presume that not answering implies guilt is outrageous.
Finally, I want to stress that it is no defense whatsoever to say that the algorithm could be used simply as a preliminary screen to red-flag papers for additional scrutiny.
If one is going to propose machine-learning classifier to make instrumental decisions that affect careers and reputations, one must carefully and thoroughly consider issues of fairness and risks algorithmic harm that might arise.
The authors of this preprint don't even mention such issues.
Not only does the Science story fail to call them on this; its author falls into the one of the oldest and most pernicious traps around algorithmic bias.
The author contrasts the use of "automated methods" with reliance on "human prejudice", entirely overlooking the fact that the automated methods proposed here are nothing but the explicit and fully-descirbed instantiation of human prejudice.
UPDATE: The paper is on pubpeer, with a response from lead author Sabel.
I find it to be a completely unsatisfactory effort at misdirection, but decide for yourself.
The irony of this guy writing a preprint that spectacularly overestimates the frequency of fake papers using ridiculous methods, getting Science and NPR and a host of right-wing news organizations to pick it up, and then saying "The loss of trust in science is the key issue we should worry about."

Thanks, and I appreciate the team wanting to diversify the moderation team. However, since I no longer work, for health reasons, and that work involved quite some stress with W3C procedures as well, I do not think me joining this social hub thingie would be a good idea. It used a predictable ID scheme, so somebody scraped it and posted the whole thing on archive.org. @x0 was around from october 2010, to I think, april or may of 2012. in those 20 years some insane number of gb were generated. People would upload show archives, for people, there's a rather large collection of a mexican or some kind of hispanic novela.

@cordova5029 Oh I noticed SNDUp had a validation system which broke with particular kinds of MP3 files depending I think on the way the tags were stored, I had to talk to Josh about fixing that one.

@x0 So. After going through some of the archive via these tools, I've come up with an interesting observation. It seems that at some point, the link scheme was changed so that instead of just straight numbers in base 10, numbers were now in base 36. However, it seems as a result, older posts were duplicated so that older base-10 links still worked. For example. 50 - Good_VS._Bad_Voice (1E) is later duplicated as 180 - Good_VS._Bad_Voice (50). That is, post 50 also shows up as post 180, where it equates to 50 in base 36. Weird! So if you noticed a lot of dups, I think that's why.
@arfy @x0 You’re absolutely right of course, and I noticed that same effect. The problem is in the underlying archive, which the tools I wrote merely extract. It could (and probably should) be worked around, but I’d need to learn more about how the ID scheme works exactly.
@arfy @x0 The ID scheme works as follows. It started out as just an increasing number. Then after a while it transitioned to a base36 ID, using the digits 0-9 and the letters a-z, might be upper case. I think it was base 36 and not base 62, though it could be base 62, in which case, letters of both lower and upper case were used. Any newer style ID that consists of just digits, and thus could conflict with an older file identified under the old scheme, had an underscore at the beginning.

My home university is ditching physical diplomas for digital ones. I sort of see the upsides from the sustainability and e-authentication POV, but the printed diploma with all the twirls, embossing and ornaments is so cool. Sometimes having a physical symbol of your achievement is important. They suggest showing your diploma to relatives "from a laptop screen" or printing it on normal printer paper.....

@miki Most definitely. Even photocopies of the original can cause some hassle outside Finland, so a purely digital one will highly likely be a proper disadvantage when applying for a position somewhere.

Yes I think so. However for autocompletes, the WAI-ARIA authoring practices also have some good examples. The "dangers" involving menu and menu item roles, as well as screen reader behaviors, are still valid and haven't changed. See also: marcozehe.de/wai-aria-menus-us… which is also still valid. And don't expect much change in that regard anytime soon, either. So yes, listbox and option it is.

Tellying rules - which is the method we used - do not involved testing of significance levels; they are a method to calculate the precision of decisions, where "sensitivity" and false alarms" are the key parameters. I suggest that you read the books by my co-author G. Gigerenzer to learn how to interpret numbers correctly (cited in our reference list). Of note: we got 90% sensitivity (=we missed 10% of known fakes) with 44/37% false alarms. These are paper not identified by our method as fake, but some proportion of them may - in fact - be true fakes when defined by other parameters. So conceptually (mot not mathematically) you can add 10% to our number and subtract 28% of the 44/37% of or false alarms, though strictly methodologically speaking this is not permissable
It is important to remember that our goal was not to identify fake papers for sure; it was to estimate the scope. Do not forget. If our 300,000 figur in biomedicine is double the true number, we still have a massive problem that we need to deal with.
Rather than focussing on methodological issues (which I always welcome), let us try to raise awareness that there is a problem we need to solve.
