FWIW, since that image is an SVG, there are ways of rendering it as a tactile graphic, if one has access to the right hardware (e.g. an embosser). @Bri @BorrisInABox I guess I have a such a bittersweet feeling about that add-on, it's so close to being almost the real thing but yet so far, but then it feels like a few tweaks to the vocoder and the way the model / Onnx runtime is processed and things would be solid. It's very limbo of a feeling. Eventually I think I'll get it there, but glad it was already convincing enough for a podcast context :D

@Bri @Tamasg Yes, because my real BNS isn't available to me. BTW, if I had it, I'd try making a fake inflected voice, I.E. a specially formatted long text file that gives the synthesizer real inflection.
@BorrisInABox @Tamasg @Bri I briefly used a PocketBraille a while back but don't remember much about it. I still have its Braille manual somewhere and would love to find a way of digitiziing it in order to preserve it.
@BorrisInABox @Tamasg @Bri I had one, I remember it would do a weird clicky thing after speaking finished for a few seconds, then the speaker would cut off with a blip. The later revision borrowed a lot of the more modern BNS ideas. The history of these 2 side-by-side is intriguing. I used the PocketBraille a bit, but more as a toy as it was not very powerful to take around.
@BorrisInABox @Bri ha. I had my scholar days from 2002 to 2004 and then jumped to BN Classic, so it was about a 2-year affair for me. The Pocket Braille does sound interesting though, wonder if any demos of that thing exist floating around, since it sounds like really the earliest BNS-like note-taking device.
@Tamasg @Bri I recorded a demo of the March 7, 1989 revision in action in the late summer of 2000 when I resurrected one from the dead, but no one ever heard it, and I lost the recording. it had the same speech implementation as the Speakout and Sounding Board. I know for sure that this is the SSI – 263, but the BNS was also, theoretically, but they were quite different.

@Bri A person I trust tried it and said it's extremely fast. I cannot assess how far is it, probably at its start more or less, but first, it's open-source, second, it's written in Rust (so compiled), and third, it's something new finally.
@Bri I guess you need to switch the language somehow. There is a barbarian method for that: take all the locale Yamls and remove the zh-cn part. Or at least the GUI one. That's what I'm going to do.
@Bri Go to %userprofile%\.rigelA, there is a config.toml file, and there you can change lang=zh to en. Didn't get where it's changed in the code yet, sorry.
@Bri Right, but I'm pressing Tab and it isn't doing that, so I'm wondering if it is still running in the background on your machine somehow. I ran it from the terminal, and then pressed Ctrl+C when I was done. @menelion

@jscholes @Bri yeah funnily enough I've made this mistake when trying to assign target shortcut through alt+enter properties dialog manually even myself to NVDA - only to discover it made the shortcut the tab key. With how it does keyhooking perhaps alt+CTRL got as stuck keys when it launched and didn't unlock, so tab was firing the shortcut. But if it auto-bound to tab key after install, now that's a bit odd for sure.
@Bri Quickly looked into this: I think that as soon as the keyboard hook in the hotkey field detects input, it checks the "shortcut" box, and creates the shell link. That represents a pretty odd design, rather than e.g. allowing you to check the box yourself, specify the hotkey afterwards, and then press OK/Save. On top of that, add the fact that the keyboard hook presumably captures Tab, instead of ignoring it. @menelion
@jscholes @Bri This makes me wonder how Windows even locates all the .lnk files that might potentially have keyboard shortcuts in them. I think this would be far less of a problem if it was e.g. limited to the desktop, which I don't think it is.
@Bri It is interesting that the Tab key is valid as the shortcut in a programmatically created shell link, indicating that Microsoft avoids that in their own Properties UI but does actually allow it. @menelion

Just bought a #DELL 3190 laptop, new for $150 (11.6" screen, 64GB eMMC). It's fully supported on #Linux, and even if it has a Celeron N4120 CPU and only 4 GB of RAM, it'll work fine with #Mint, or #XFCE (and #Gnome/ #KDE if you don't mind some minor lag). Not opening too many browser tabs will ensure that the swap file won't get used too often.
If you're on a tight budget this is a good option, as it also has great battery life too at 10 hours with Linux.
@sonny It's a small laptop, so I don't expect it to have additional storage abilities. Although they were some models of the 3190 that came with 128GB, so you might wanna hunt for these instead.
Debian takes 9 GB of space on a clean install btw, fedora 12GB, ubuntu/mint take 16GB. In fact, I have some installations of Debian/XFce at 16 GB emmc (ex-chromebooks). Tight, but it works. So at least for me, 64GB is plenty. The 4 GB of RAM will (eventually) be a bigger problem than internal storage.

To my blind followers: I wonder if anyone has done a latency comparison in the same spirit as this post: danluu.com/input-lag/ but for keystroke-to-speech latency. I wonder how an Apple IIe with an Echo (a real one, not emulated) would compare to a modern Windows PC or Mac running Eloquence. It's been too long since I used a real Echo, or a DOS PC with speech synthesis hardware, so I don't remember how they felt in comparison to modern PCs.
I've somewhat recently played with my Rockbox device, and was astonished at how low-latency it was. I don't think I've ever saw that on a PC, maybe ZDSR came somewhat close. That's even more impressive considering how underpowered those devices are, though it's technically samples, not TTS, which probably makes this easier.
I haven't looked at it that well, but responsiveness is the one thing I remember very distinctly. In general, it was a hodgepodge of what other, western screen readers could do. You had Window-Eyes-style mouse support, System-Access-style Cloud settings, NVDA-style translation etc.
It was definitely the "do what you need to do to get things done, even if you can't get it done through official APIs" kind of screen reader. Among other things, I remember that it somehow hooked itself into conhost.exe, so that you could review the whole console buffer in command line apps, not just what was currently on the screen.
I've heard that their SAPI5 implementation completely bypassed inter-process COM and talked directly to synthesizer DLLs, pretending to be Windows, although I don't know if this is true...
I'd recommend trying it for a fresh perspective, but that should probably be done in a sandbox. The program is unabashedly Chinese, and with that come sounds stolen straight from Apple and Software Windows Defender really doesn't like. I tested it in 2020 I think, and that's when it was getting Chrome support due to most people in China still using Microsoft browsers at that time.
Interesting. I don't have any empirical evidence, only vague memories now, but I feel like Latency wasn't ever a concern back in the Apple II days or the DOS days. I don't ever remember encountering any significant instances of it until the advent of Windows and early software synthesizers.
I'd be interested in results of this. I, too, used both dos and windows screen readers with a keynote Gold SA back in 2000. Responsiveness felt pretty good
