Python has seen significant performance improvements in the last few releases. MarkupSafe has a C extension to speed up operations, but it's now *slower* in many cases than the plain Python implementation. Having a C extension increases the difficulty of maintenance, builds, releases, and installs. Sometimes I'll open a website and it is simply unusable on iOS. This one, for example. It works fine on desktop browsers, but on safari, all I can see are the menu button, a lot of pipe characters and not much else. I had to use screen recognition to get the customer service phone number. Thoroughly underwhelmed by how little transparency I can get into the underlying code on an iPhone.
