The AI pendulum stars swinging! :) flipboard.social/@TechDesk/112…

One of the selling points of Google’s flagship generative AI models, Gemini 1.5 Pro and 1.5 Flash, is the amount of data they can supposedly process and analyze. But new research suggests that the models aren’t, in fact, very good at those things. “While models like Gemini 1.5 Pro can technically process long contexts, we have seen many cases indicating that the models don’t actually ‘understand’ the content,” Marzena Karpinska, a postdoc at UMass Amherst. Just discovered that CGP Grey already has a video about how bad an idea government #encryptionBackDoors is.
It's 8 years old already. Yes this super stupid idea is returning again and again. I am so tired of this.

Hey folks, we're going to be at @allsystemsgo in Berlin later this year. @cas and @craftyguy will be talking about how #postmarketOS has evolved over the last few years, our experiences with #systemd, and our plans for an #immutable postmarketOS that doesn't restrict user freedom.

If you're into low level Linux userspace and middleware definitely come along :D

I've spoken about ossification many times and how that for example have prevented TFO (TCP Fast Open) to get deployed widely.

Today #wget2 joined the team disabled-TFO-by-default: lists.gnu.org/archive/html/bug…

in reply to boiert

@boiert I am not involved in the change. You need to talk to the wget2 team.

I made some comments on the RFC. However: The only use-case I found for this protocol would be an in-kernel advertising link-redirector.

Etsy is about to ban the sale of most sex toys and sexual content (ANY depictions of genitalia and sex acts). Effective July 29th.

Non-penetrable and non-insertable toys and kink gear will still be allowed (for example: restraints, clamps, harnesses).

Nudity for models will be banned, including "genitalia, anuses, gluteal clefts [a.k.a. buttcracks] and female nipples/areolas."
(A LOT to unpack here...)

There will also be a ban on any "sexual references to familial relationships" in articles up for sale, such as "daddy's slut" or "choke me, mommy".

Do/Have you used a CD/DVD/Bluray in a while?

What about burning a disk?

I'm surveying modern day awareness/usage of optical media, mostly to confirm some demographic theories, so if you know what a CD/DVD is, please help me (and maybe others) out by answering some ~10 questions here:

And then please boost for better visibility! Thank you!

The ElevenLabs Reader app, whose iOS counterpart has made a lot of noise in the visually impaired community, is coming to Android. If you go to the following link on your Android device, it displays a "coming soon" message, giving you the option to pre-register in order to have the app installed automatically as soon as it becomes available:

Our fifth anniversary, the return of ARM and the Endeavour release with Plasma 6.1 is here

It has been five years since four former Antergos moderators took the plunge into creating a distro without any knowledge or experience at all. Creating EndeavourOS was a true endeavour for us, conquering mountains and deep valleys of code paired with frustration and

A lot of #Emacs #accessibility tips, from the view of Speechd-el, which is a more traditional screen reader, as opposed to Emacspeak's more all-in-one package.

in reply to Devin Prater :blind:

@Devin Prater :blind: Frankly there are just two posts like this dated a few years and single recent post. Perhaps I'll ad more in the near future.
If you like to suggest some topics, please feel free to point them out.
My ideas are: copying and pasting, reading to the end of a line, looking for context sensitive help, using #emacs customize buffers, speechd-el review commands, adjusting speech properties at runtime. These are new to me as a novice emacs user.
in reply to Peter Vágner

@pvagner I think adjusting speech properties, and getting context sensitive help, would be great. Also, um, I doubt it's possible :) but getting Emacs and speechd-el working on iOS? :)

Digitalizace stavebního řízení.

V pondělí 1. 7. nastanou po 35 letech velké změny ve stavebním právu. Pojďme si to projít.

Docker is used as a substitute of build system and solid deployment practices.

This is why everything turns to shit.

in reply to Hubert Figuière

@hub I would mind it less if the container images were built in a reproducible way but no, they all just `apt-get update` and ship whatever falls out. I guess if they were rigorous enough to have reproducible builds they probably wouldn't need Docker.

So what's the new default SBC that is community friendly, work out of the box and can be purchased easily?

I'll still be #Queer tomorrow.

As #Pride month comes to a close, this is your reminder that we still exist the rest of the year and we really need allies to keep showing up for us.

March, vote, write to your representatives, sign petitions, donate to charities, buy from #LGBTQIA+ business owners, learn, and fly your rainbow flags year round.

This might just be the most minimalistic GUI for a software installer on Windows ever.
in reply to Bob Pony

There was an old Polish speech synthesizer that would just ask whether you want it to be installed. If you clicked "yes", it would start installing automatically and then show a "Install successful" dialog, and that was about it.

As a blind person, I find it quite sad that the most common use of Unicode Braille these days is to make terminal apps *less* accessible to the people Braille was originally intended for.

Peter Vágner reshared this.

in reply to David Cantrell 🏏

or, well, anything else I haven't thought of that would make the accessibility problem go away without getting rid of the useful display for sighted people?
in reply to David Cantrell 🏏

@DrHyde Terminals are actually surprisingly backwards in terms of accessibility. Where modern GUI environments have a way to indicate such semantic information to a screen reader, terminals don't really. If the spinner contains a progress indication (like percent done), I would at least put that at the beginning of the line to make it slightly more readable. Otherwise, there's nothing you can really do.

We need something like the ARIA specification, but for terminals.

This is bonkers. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disapp… Some pharmaceutical crystals can no longer be synthesised because they now spontaneously change to a more stable (but less medically efficacious) form. The more stable form acts as a seed crystal for the less stable form, and once this happens it creates a cascading effect, in which people who have ever worked with the stable form can contaminate an entire factory/lab and make it unable to reproduce the earlier form.
