More removals of VoiceOver custom actions in the iOS Youtube app. Now when we're reading comments, after each comment, a like button, a dislike button, and a reply button. So, 4 swipes to reach the next comment. Who is making these decisions at Google, and why?

@bryansmart @pitermach Yeah I've definitely seen the two issues when posting comments/viewing a thread you're talking about, but not the first one with video titles yet. That will be annoying since I always use it in portrait.

Fun fact: the code which took Apollo 11 to the moon is available on github github.com/chrislgarry/Apollo-…

And if you look through it you'll see that - joyfully - it also includes original comments.

My absolute favourite thing about the Moon Code is that it includes comments like this: "TEMPORARY - I HOPE HOPE HOPE"

A little #PIpeWire tip I learned today. If you want to use OBS Studio with a Google Meet session in Firefox. Start OBS Studio first, if not Firefox will set a format for the camera that OBS Studio do not support and you get a black box in OBS Studio. The other way is fine.

Wim is working on a proper solution, adding video conversion to PipeWire, but for now the ordering do matter.

I’m sorry, but for some reason there are exactly two types of humans in industrial cybersecurity. 95% are mission driven and incredibly fun and kind. 5% are very angry and gatekeepy senior people who want to prevent anyone else from ever contributing to the field. #ICSCybersecurity
in reply to Lesley Carhart

Well, yes and no. I mean, you can see some level of gatekeeping almost everywhere, but it seems to be a little bit more prevalent phenomenon for ehm ehm niche stuff. Ever went through the forum of Linux folks? Developers? Photographers? Or even certain gamers (Hello my old WoW folks)?

Edit: and my favourite group - self made movie critics (csfd.cz which is imdb like service in Czech / Slovak)

In completely other news, does anyone know of a #tool that essentially consolidates/syncs meetings from multiple Google calendars, some of which are behind SSO, and putss them in one overview for me to look at? I don't even mind if it's an LLM-based tool, an alexa skill, IFTTT ... just ... I have several calendars to keep track of at the best of times and it can honestly get a little overwhelming. Bonus points if it also handles the mess that is MS Team. Oh, and #accessibility is kinda non-negotiable :)

Remember when you could just buy a newspaper for like $1 at a shop?

Imagine if you went to the newsagent and they were like “$25 please”

“Huh? That’s steep”
“Oh that gives you a month of access”
“I don’t want a month of access, i want a newspaper”
“We’ll also flyer your house every day”
“I don’t care, I just want a newspaper. Today’s newspaper”
“You also get access to our other newspapers in other towns”
“I don’t care, I want a newspaper for here, today”
“Oh it’s not just for today. It’s for a month. And three months after”
“Wait, what happens after that, is that it over?”
“LOL of course not. It’s $35 a month after that”
“What? Why?”
“Introductory offer. Also we’ll tell a bunch of other companies where you live and THEY’LL flyer you too”
“Know what, it’s fine, I don’t need a paper”
“I’ll send you a reminder in a week”
“STOP. FFS”

And they wonder why online news makes no money.

A large part of this is that online micropayments are hard, mostly due to fraud and maybe a bit of KYC/AML.
in reply to Mikołaj Hołysz

@miki I would be fine having an account and then paying a couple of bucks if I read the paper *that day*. Then at the end of the month if I’ve read the paper ten times, bill me that.

I don’t want another subscription that takes money for a thing I don’t use. I’m sick of those.

If there are going to be climate-justified subsidies for owning electric cars, there should be subsidies for not owning cars at all.

This is what hides Organic Maps from F-Droid search by default?
Really?
A hotel widget to fucking kayak dot com and... the download server for maps? Yikes.

That sucks, F-Droid. Arguably the kayak.com thing is funny, yes, but... The maps CDN? :(

When worrying about the harms from deploying AI, it’s issues like this that have caused and will cause the most harm. Not the AI suddenly turning into the machines from the Matrix and enslaving humanity.

The system that was meant to analyze income and health information to automatically determine eligibility for benefits simply didn’t work and often failed to load the correct data to analyze. 🤦🏾‍♂️

@cachondo I'd have thought they would make sorting that out a priority so we didn't end up having to go through more hoops to download the software. Anyway I've managed to sort it for now, thanks for the clarification.

What the Demise of WCBS Newsradio 880 Says About the Future of All-News Radio | Barrett Media barrettmedia.com/2024/08/13/wh…
in reply to David Goldfield

Aww this read made me sad but I do like his ending. I hope it comes to pass as he imagines it but time will tell I suppose. I'd miss #KYW if it went but as I say that I feel hypocritical because I spend more time listening to radio from the UK than my local area so there we are.
#kyw
in reply to Robin Frost

@robini71 I just found out about WCBS this morning and I was shocked. With the plethora of news channels and apps, maybe an all-news radio station doesn't have the relevance that it once did?
in reply to David Goldfield

Perhaps, but when there is a major disaster or a power outage suddenly they’re importance is underscore once again
in reply to Robin Frost

@robini71 Oh, absolutely. When the power goes out and if the Internet becomes unavailable, radio is surely the best resource.
in reply to David Goldfield

I dunno. Those American news stations are quite superficial. They seem usually to operate on a 20 minute clock. I can see AI making this format much easier to produce. The algorithm can pick the stories, parse them for good broadcasting copy, and put them in a queue to be read by AI using good news voices that have been licensed. You would have live talent on a retainer for big stories that require intensive coverage.

Actually CWE is kinda helpful as it provides a descriptive approach to the issues, while most of the others you mentioned are mostly enumerating existing entries. Sometimes even with such generic texts that entries become interchangeable.
in reply to BenBE

@benbe I believe the CWE idea is sound and fine, but I'm not sure it actually works or serves much purpose in the end. A little like time reports: there's a thinking somewhere the data will be useful for something but in the end it never is...
in reply to daniel:// stenberg://

I like CWE for its documentation as it serves as a nice educational resource when teaching colleges or discussing requirements. Less from the identify-this-vuln side of things.
