Just updated my personal @gotosocial instance to 0.17. Super painless, except for the minor bit of having to change the entrypoint/command to sleep inf to stop the instance so I could SSH in and back up the database, which ultimately wasn't needed but is still a good idea anyway. Still though, it was much simpler than Mastodon upgrades which, I'm told, can get rather dicey.

Might look into contributing. GTS does everything I want except for push notifications, which might be fun to add.

I know a lot of y’all are probably reeling from that Stallman report and I’ve even seen people remarking on how no one was listening until now.

What you need to understand is that the things in that report have been known, widely, for many years. They are not “open secrets”. They are things people have actively tried to address, at significant scale, many many times. Some of those times even resulted in (brief) consequences.

The man Is like a cockroach in more ways than I care to describe and what we should all be noticing here is the how incredibly impossible it is to remove an influential white man from power and have him face real consequences. He’s not even remotely rich.

The people defending him aren’t turning a blind eye. They are actively, knowingly enabling him. And that’s not because they care about the movement…

…it’s because they know they are like him, and if he suffers consequences, they’ll be next. And that just won’t do. They don’t give a shit about a “movement” that’s basically petered out by now.

For our (small) master dissertation about #education (but mostly because we are interested), we are doing research about using #OpenStreetMap within #secondary education (roughly 12 - 18 years old, but with a focus on 16 - 18 years old).

Five queries have been received just this morning from people who have done this and they have found it is not working correctly.
It wouldn't be working as you expect because the version of Leasey which does support JAWS 2025 is in beta testing.

The reason that you install a new JAWS beta is so that you can provide feedback to Vispero on what does not work as you expect.
Leasey changes JAWS access in a number of ways. So if you find something does not work as it used to, and you submit a report to Vispero based upon your findings, that is a false report because you have installed additional script files into the beta. So they may not be able to reproduce your problem.

In some ways, JAWS 2025 is a very different animal to all previous versions. There are currently different speech prompts it is giving in some areas together with other issues.
Leasey has to fit into the context of this moving target at present.

A full and thorough guide has already been written which explains in a friendly way how to move from JAWS 2024 to 2025 so as to gain the best experience. That will be published ahead of the release of Leasey 9.1. Please wait until then. Thank you.

Perforce (Owner of Puppet since April 2022) has taken over the greatest Puppet community on Slack. This was an independent Slack that had a non-Perforce people at the helm. Perforce convinced Slack that they should own the community, and Slack removed all non-Perforce people as moderators, banned Ben Ford (Instance Owner) and transferred ownership to Perforce.

Last time I talked to Perforce Legal a few weeks ago, they were excited by our “community owned community space” model. The fact that the company has now taken this subversive and hostile action makes me think that they are about to announce or do something incredibly shitty and want to have iron control over the messaging.

Puppet is currently licensed unter Apache 2.0, and has no AI-Integration nor are Puppet users absolutely required to make recurrent payments to Perforce.

CLA: Contributors License Agreement. If you want to submit code to the project, you have to sign a CLA that gives the respective owner company full IP rights to your contrib, enabling them to cleanly unilaterally change the project license at their discretion.

DCO: Developer Certificate of Origin. You have to submit a DCO that asserts that you have the right to contribute the code under the GPL v3 of the project.. The DCO exists to prevent your employer from sueing IBM/Ansible over your contrib, not to transfer rights to IBM/Ansible.

Beta release announcement

This is the very first BETA RELEASE of GoToSocial. What does it mean that we're leaving alpha and entering beta? Not much really. It had to happen eventually, and now is as good a time as any to go from "people shouldn't really use this software" to "people can consider using this software but be warned it's not done yet, lots of stuff is missing, yadda yadda". Don't read too much into it!

Release highlights

• Interaction policies: This release gives you the ability to set interaction policies on your statuses using the settings panel. Interaction policies let you determine who can reply to, like, or boost your statuses. You can accept or reject interactions as you wish; accepted replies will be added to your replies collection, and unwanted replies will be dropped. This feature is still a work-in-progress as we will almost certainly have some kinks to work out in terms of implementation etc, but we wanted to get it into people's hands as quickly as possible.

• Much wider range of support for different media types: In this release we've embedded a webassembly build of ffmpeg into the GoToSocial binary, so that users can post many different types of media than previously, including mp3, flac, and other audio types, and many more video types. Admins: you don't need to have ffmpeg installed on your server for this to work.
• Audio player: to complement the new media types, we adapted our current video player to also play audio, so people visiting your profile can play MP3s and FLACs. Album art is supported when embedded in the audio file!
• Header/avatar alt text: You can now set alt-text for your avatar + header images, so that screenreader users visiting your profile can read a description of your beautiful face.
• Better threading model for statuses: On the web view of a thread, conversations are now indented at different levels, to make it easier to see who's replying to whom.
• Prefers-reduced-motion is now supported, so that folks with animations turned off in their operating system or browser aren't confronted with lots of animation when they open your profile.
• Conversations view: You can now view a list of your direct message conversations, making it much easier to keep track of who you're talking to.
• Import/export csv files: It's now possible to import Mastodon-compatible CSV files for accounts you follow and accounts you block, making it much easier to migrate across instances. Export of these files is supported too.
• Exclusive lists: You can now mark lists as "exclusive", which means that posts from accounts in an exclusive list will show up only in that list and not in your home timeline.
• Show/hide posts on your profile: Previously only Public posts were shown on your web profile. This is still the default, but you can now choose to show unlisted posts on your web profile too (the Mastodon default), or to show no posts at all.
• Lots of new themes: solarized, brutalist, ecks pee, and more (see screenshots).
• Store worker queue on restart: when you stop the instance, pending tasks are stored into the database, and loaded again when you start up the instance, so that no tasks get lost between restarts.
