If you want to mug a software engineer, ask them if a static code analysis tool should consider `if time.time() > 0:` to be considered the same as `if True:`

Then, while they're writing a 40,000 word blog post on the topic, hit them on the head and take their wallet.

There’s a certain kind of person who excels at staying just on this side of any bright lines in a community code of conduct, but nevertheless manages to be so unpleasant as to drive other people away. I don’t have any good ideas about how to deal with those people, especially if they get into a position of power.

Oh, that's great. Had to put BSI back in my roter, because the command to invoke it has broken in the latest iOS update. Not amused.

Re last: I thought I was done with shitty machine-learning #AltText but nope.

I'm pretty sure this is in relation to #Airpods actually, not dental floss but there we go.

That sounds like Threads. They do the same nonsense as the other Meta platforms.

Seems like 95% of error messages fall into 2 categories. The first are so vague as to be useless. "Sorry, something went wrong." If it isn't that, it's something only serious techies can understand, such as the one I just got. “{"status":415,"title":"Unsupported Media Type","detail":"Content type 'application/x-www-form-urlencoded;charset=UTF-8' not supported","errors":[]}.” No link to a support site, or back to the homepage, or anything. I wonder if they've ever wondered why nobody ever signs up. Their form goes to a server that absolutely isn't expecting form submitions. Most people will have no idea what just happened. (2/2)

Today, JAWS version 2025 has been released.
All our products are compatible with JAWS 2025, even J-Say, the update for which has just been released.
So targets have been met and in some cases exceeded.

Within the next few days, we will be contacting people who have a J-Say SMA and providing them with their upgrades.
However, the vast majority of people who have J-Say have acquired it through a Distributor. So in most cases, it is the Distributor who would let you know that the upgrade is available.

If you think you do have a current SMA, your best course of action is to send to us your JAWS serial number so it can be checked. We may then be able to provide it to you faster.

Quickly hitting peak frustration with Thunderbird's accessibility issues. Are there any other good accessible local or web-based email clients?

Don't suggest Gmail, I don't trust Google not to torch my account and nuke my data because some AI somewhere had a bad day.

Also note that I've used Thunderbird for over a decade, I've done all the usual config changes but the updates continue to break accessibility in new and innovative ways. It's not me, it's them, and I can't just not read some messages anymore because Thunderbird can't do accessibility testing right.

Matt Campbell reshared this.

in reply to Cleverson

@cwb.social I'm still on .3. For me, some of my HTML emails don't read, but they do in other apps. They used to read just fine. Also, I'm hitting a weird issue where I'm focusing one email in my Sent folder but everything I do to interact works with an entirely separate email. I'm trying to reply to a message I sent to someone, and it's almost like I'm replying to an entirely different message. Hoping that's just a display bug and my IMAP server isn't hosed, but there've been enough regressions and I'm kind of done.

Welp, yesterday Apple notified me that my backordered new Ipad mini was now due after November's 8th. So today I walked into the Apple Store in Brussels and walked out with three exact same backordered model (then cancelled the order). Why does Belgium get them more than a week before Scotland?

masto hive mind, I've seen a lot of stuff about factorio, and the volunteer factorio access mod, is this worth investing in, and the factorio space rage expansion?
in reply to Jason Fayre

@jfayre I'll hunt up the mod discord after my meeting that starts in five minutes.

#curl source code age (take 2)

How large share of the code was written after a certain date, over time.

#curl
in reply to daniel:// stenberg://

Cool chart! The 100% are code base today? Does it mean curl is not growing significantly since around 2005? What happened there?
in reply to Daniel Nordhoff-Vergien

@dve 100% is the entire code base of the time. It has kept growing ever since before 2000.

But that confusion risk is also why I won't keep this version of the graph, I will go with the "take 4" I posted later.

so the commons are shouting "shame!" about crumbling schools, unfit hospitals etc. But a penny off a pint at the pump in the pub had them all on their feet.
in reply to Sean Randall

if I wasn't lucky enough to listen Live over lunch, the text feed on the BBC is behind by a good 5 minutes. That's a shame. This is the sort of thing our license fee should make handling of reliable and speedy.

Interesting. When I search for “Norton Password Manager” on Chrome Web Store, it first lists five completely unrelated extensions, and only the last search result is the actual Norton Password Manager. Somebody told me that website is run by a company specializing in search, so this shouldn’t be due to incompetence, right? What is it then?

Vielen Dank! Angenehm schmerzfrei.

there's something mildly ironic about the head office of a parcel delivery company being on the 2nd floor. One of the most irritating things for delivery drivers and it's baked in to every communique they send.

If I didn't have to pay over $700 for Dragon naturally speaking, I'd also get J-dictate for myself because I really enjoy speaking over typing even though I am good at typing.
in reply to Nick's world

I can't imagine using my voice instead of my fingers. I never use Siri and only use the smart speakers for limited things, usually when my hands are occupied. I guess I grew up not being welcome to talk very much, I could always type. It also freed me from not being able to communicate well as a child, so I suppose in that regard I've never considered it as something to be replaced by a more efficient method.
in reply to Sean Randall

@cachondo It's something I considered because even though I can type be there are times when its a pain and if I'm ever going to have a job heavy in writing, I'd rather speak than type.

in reply to kurtseifried (he/him)

@kurtseifried hang on, I have a much nicer version coming up. It's just a little slow... running git blame on all files in 200+ tags takes a while

Now, because of Google's no-opt-out policy on AI searches, every search uses ten times more power than they used to. Want to find out what movie Danny DeVito did with Arnold Schwarzenegger? Now, you have to weigh your curiosity against the health of the planet.
Don't Google that! It was Twins! Jeez, didn't you read the start of this post?

- Patricia, you ancient programmer, how does one get good at programming, please share your wisdom.

*thinks*

Well, you write a lot of bad code, like a hole shitton of bad code, then you maintain it for a few years and then you look at it again and say holy shit, and that’s when you know you’ve gotten better. Rinse and repeat for ever.

The great start for #PragmaConf Day 2 continues with @feli speaking about accessibility in designing APIs.
