"How he’s developed and wielded this influence over two decades is one of the more consequential and underappreciated shapers of the failed global response to the Covid-19 pandemic. Entering year two, this response has been defined by a zero-sum vaccination battle that has left much of the world on the losing side."

Request Tracker, an open-source issue tracker we use at work, has had almost completely inaccessible dropdowns ever since 5.0. In the last couple days, I've been poking around, trying to work out why. They use Bootstrap 4.6, which is way behind, and even Bootstrap 5.x seems to have accessibility problems. They take an unordered list, a text input, and a hidden input, and try to simulate a select element. You know what's fully accessible? A SELECT ELEMENT! Just use what's already there, people!
in reply to Alex Hall

we had an issue today where they wanted ticked checkboxes that didn't do anything when clicked. Disabling them wasn't on the table. Crazy.

The people who told you that "suppressing" the Hunter Biden laptop story was a national scandal are the same people who want to bury the House Ethics Committee's report about Matt Gaetz's raping and sex trafficking.

I want to recommend my friend for a job at the Internet Archive as a video archivist. If anyone has any tips on how I can best support their application, I would love to hear it. I think they'd be fricking awesome at it.

What To Use Instead of PGP

It's been more than five years since The PGP Problem was published, and I still hear from people who believe that using PGP (whether GnuPG or another OpenPGP implementation) is a thing they should be doing. It isn't. The part of the free and open source software community that thinks PGP is just dandy are the same kind of people that happily use…

I want this to be a shorthand, like "sealioning" or "spoons". I'm gonna try again calling the thing I want to talk about "my cymbals".

Hey, can I cymbal you with something?

I've got some cymbals I want to bang.

Omg, Jordi, can you please stop banging those cymbals? We're talking about something else here.

Doing a screenshare with someone who has so many tabs open that they can't even read tab titles and they are constantly getting lost and having to open even more tabs is excruciating for me.

Been out for a walk first time by myself. It was nerve wracking but I was determined to grasp the nettle. Was so glad to have met a lady on crutches who had broken her ankle she was flying along what are the chances?! We chatted exchanged ankle break stories she gave me some good tips and she had built up to walking three times a day with longer walks she is just brilliant. I went “around the block” not too far and sat on a bench to take in the Autumn night air.

Keep it up! :) I wish you to get well soon and walk again like you used to. Also awesome you met someone who gave you tips. I wish you all the best. :)

For about 2 years I've been cursing that one of my two monitor arms didn't rise high enough. Today I finally engaged my brain and swapped the two arms around, so the monitor is on the one with tallest reach and laptop tray is on the less capable one. Problem sorted. 🤦

Anyone have opinions?

Data colonialism: A Microsoft AI Data Center Saps Water From A Small Mexican Town

After decades fighting against water bottling and beer companies, rural communities in Mexico are now also having to compete against Big Tech for water.

Development in the Global North has long come at the expense of the Global South as well as Black and indigenous frontline communities in places like Cancer Alley and Flint, Michigan.

Well, that is a very consequential-feeling milestone all right. We’ve purchased our one-way tickets to the US.

in reply to Jonathan Mosen

@JonathanMosen@caneandable.socialI hope it proceeds smoothly. In my case (moving from Australia to the US to take up a nonprofit research job offer), there was a professional relocation consultant on the US side who assisted with many logistical issues - not a privilege for me specifically, but standard practice by my US-based employer at the time. This support helped immeasurably.

Next week, I need to travel to Denmark to visit a client. Their office is in some small town, and I wanted to book accommodation nearby, but there was nothing available. The Key Account Manager told me to go ahead and book a place in Legoland.

After much grumbling, I finally managed to pick a room!

Nice did you make that? Also, what kind of genre is that supposed to be? :D
in reply to Winter blue tardis🇧🇬🇭🇺

@tardis I did with help from Suno, because I'm neither female nor have such chops to play drums. Words are my own, though, as is the arrangement. Genre is heavy/symphonic metal.
in reply to Steve

Ah, interesting. Yeah I wondered about the female haha and then I was like, okay, this looks a bit like AI. But it's pretty cool soo.
in reply to Steve

I used to be able to play drums and I still sing, but I don't play drums so I wouldn't have been a lot of help to you I guess.
