in reply to Aliaksandr, the last Dzik

in reply to André Polykanine

Some folks who are interested in being more prepared for disaster or emergency situations are interested in using HAM/amateur radio as a communication tool you can use when cell & internet networks are down.

I did some research on getting licensed (in the US) & learning to operate HAM radios this summer and finally got the notes I sent as an email to some local friends typed up for easier reference on my blog.

Man it's sad to see how many things on Steam are clickables and how there are like no headings. I figured it out in several minutes as an AT Instructor and advanced screen reader user. I know I'm preaching to the choir when I post this kind of thing, but literally it'd be so fuckin' easy. The least they can do is aria role = button or something. I guess they're another vendor I refuse to buy from knowing that none of my money goes toward giving a shit about accessibility.

Hi visually impaired people 👋 Does your screen reader read out text in bitmaps for you?

I.e. if I post a jpg of text, does your speech thing decode and read it out to you?

Please boost for reach...

  • yes it reads out text in images (0%, 0 votes)
  • No, give me alt text if you can (8%, 7 votes)
  • it does, but its wonky so alt-text still helps (2%, 2 votes)
  • not visually impaired but want to know (89%, 76 votes)

Two questions about the Servo project, as it exists today:

1) Can I use it as a web browser on windows right now?
2) Does it have accessibility support?

Anyone knows, and, preferably has tried this?

If anyone has managed to get an accessibility cookie from h-captcha (hell-captcha), how?

I am trying desperately to get one, and I cannot seem to get past the ability to enter my email. It keeps giving me an error every time I go to submit. Please, please help.

in reply to Estelle

You have to do everything on one browser, must enable cross cookie some thingy I don't know. They have text challenges for some regions.

I kinda wanna continue learning languages but I stopped using Duolingo
Is there a good alternative?
Mostly wanna continue with Japanese, maybe french and Dutch as well :3

Last week we said goodbye to #electronicaFair 2024. Big thanks to the organizers and to everyone who came by our booth to talk to us! We'll be around in the next edition in 2026. See you there! 👋

Mobile devices require a text editor app. At least, I can't edit text files on my iPhone without an app, unless I am missing something! But as for desktops? Yes, all desktops have text editors, at least! @cachondo

I learned of a JAWS shortcut today that I didn't know before.
1. Launch a web page.
2. Press JAWS Key+6 to move into Settings Centre.
3. Now to the shortcut. Press Control+Shift+W. This allows you to customise settings for a specific domain.
Of course I've got a lot of customisations for various domains for my own use, but I've been getting at this feature another way. I didn't know about that Control+Shift+W shortcut to take you there directly. #SharkVember @freedomscientific

If you harbored any doubts regarding #Bluesky and their claims of decentralization, you HAVE TO read this brilliant, insightful toot by @jonny about the impossibility of multiple relays and what would happen if one tried to split off from #Bsky the corporation: neuromatch.social/@jonny/11336…

I actually recommend you read the whole thread - and follow Jonny! (Thank you for the recommendation @oblomov!)

Hi. Thanks for this. I'm wondering if this would be a good thing for me to have because I have a lot of files created by my QBraille who's default is BRL files. Then it causes an issue when I try to read those same files on my Brailliant BI40X. There are a lot of weird symbols and things that are not interpreted properly. I'll have to give this a try.

"Premiér Petr Fiala uvedl, že považuje svoji vládu za nejúspěšnější v české historii."

Byl jeden světový politik, jmenoval se Biden a ten taky tvrdil, že jeho vláda je velmi úspěšná. A ona objektivně v mnoha ohledech úspěšná je, ale když se tváříš, že je vše "nadmíru výtečné", a nepřiznáš, že i tak můžou mít lidi problémy, i když za ně tvoje vláda ani přímo nemůže, prohraješ volby.

I was doing so good there for about a week. Now I'm back to this thing where I sleep for no more than two hours, then I'm up for the rest of the day.
I've gotten about 8 hours or so of sleep in the last four days.

I guess it's better than being awake for many days straight, which I've also done somewhat recently.

In related news, stress sucks.

Aww. Well, I started doing meditation a year or so ago, and it has really helped me with a lot of issues, but mostly stressful situations.

Well, Microsoft Edge is kind of a pile now. It's pretty easy to accidentally get stuck in the address bar / toolbar region and no amount of f6ing will get you out of it. So, if we want Chromium, we choose between that nonsense, Chrome and its evilness, or Brave and its problematicness. I'm sure happy Firefox works for me 99.99% of the time.
in reply to Simon Jaeger (Procrastodon)

HAhyaha yep. Well, sadly it doesn't have enough market share to test with, so that kind of sucks. But can I really blame people? At least I have two browsers that I do completely different things with. LOL. Also Safari isn't that bad. It works for work.
But only FF on Windows, nothing else. Although, I do have Chrome installed for these 1% of the time when some app decides it's going to say it doesn't support FF.

Holy crap Samsung Health on my watch is abysmal. I'm sick of trying to make it work properly.

Back to Google fit, even if it can't find me on my walks.

Will avoid both these brands for my next watch.

in reply to Christian Biggins

I've found Samsung health to be considerably better than Google fit. What are your issues with it?
in reply to aaron

@fireborn the GPS is terrible. I'm constantly walking through buildings or stumbling around like a drunk. I can deal with that but the constant checking that I'm still on my walks despite the elevated heart rate and (drink) GPS activity is infuriating. Sometimes 10+ "are you still walking?" Prompts per 30 mins.

Today it just paused the workout for no apparent reason. I didn't notice for 10 mins even though I have to check it every minute or two for that above-mentioned prompt.

So bad.

in reply to aaron

@fireborn it's also my second one cause the first was even worse with the GPS! 😂
in reply to Christian Biggins

Interesting! I’ve not had that issue personally but that sounds super frustrating. Have you tried Strava or some other third-party app?
in reply to aaron

@fireborn to be honest I kinda wanted to stick with these. I have so many fitness app accounts created over the years. If I could I would just use Fit.
Interestingly, I have a Huawei GT3 which is fantastic with fitness stuff but it doesn't play nicely when synchronising the date over health sync. I might try it again, it's been long enough for an update 🤣.
in reply to Christian Biggins

Fair enough. I just thought that something truly third-party might work better than something from Google that have their own watches to support. And push.
in reply to aaron

@fireborn yeah that's a good point and worth investigating. The new Health Connect service looks promising for using third parties. Health Sync has been great for a long time!

I submitted the manuscript for my next book!

It's a collection of folktales about misunderstood / underappreciated animals. Bats, sharks, wolves, rats, spiders, etc. I managed to find cool stories for each, and in every one of them the animal is portrayed in a positive light.

It was one heck of a research project, and I really enjoyed it 😄

i'm going to make a radical claim:

the "phone" has basically ceased to exist.

these devices we call phones? they're pocket computers that just happen to have cellular connectivity. they should be treated as such - which means open specs, unlockable booting, replaceable operating systems.

if you need to blob the cellular bit for regulatory approval, fine, do that, but agree a standard interface to it (like AT commands for old modems, or the interface to the Pi's GPU capabilities) that all OSes can use on all cellular devices. but there's no excuse for locking down any of the rest of the device, is there?

This one’s quite important, thespinoff.co.nz/atea/25-10-20….

While Māordom has been in an uproar about the Treaty Principles Bill, which New Zealand First MP Shane Jones says is “dead in the water”, the coalition government has quietly set the wheels in motion for at least 28 pieces of legislation to have their Treaty clauses reviewed and potentially removed.

Key terminology here is “investors.” This seems like just the right sort of trickery perfected by conservatives in America.
