Threads is the largest player so far to adopt #ActivityPub, and as @mike says, “The implications are huge.”

Why is Threads doing this? How is the team working with the community? How are they thinking about moderation, monetization and privacy in these early days and going forward?
In the newest episode of @dot_social, Mike digs in with @rklambo, Director of Product Management, and @pcottle, Software Engineer. Check it out in the fediverse on PeerTube or wherever you like to listen to podcasts. More details here:

If you’re on mastodon.social, I would highly recommend that you switch to a different server that protects its people instead of exposing them to a well-known bad actor like Facebook/Meta via Threads.

For alternatives, see: https://fedipact.veganism.social

And remember that Mastodon is not the fediverse. The fediverse is much more than just Mastodon and definitely more so than mastodon.social and Mastodon gGmbH.

The reason why #Threads and #Mastodon are incompatible is that Mastodon is a community, and Threads is a market. That's it.

It's not big Fed vs small Fedi. It's not platforms vs protocols.

It's communities vs markets.

Communities are supportive and markets are extractive. Communities answer to those who must live with decisions made. Markets answer to money.

And wouldn't you know it, those contrasting forces influence people's behaviors, goals, and motivations for engaging with others.

#Google and #Facebook didn't kill #Jabber / #XMPP. They hammered the final nails of its coffin. Big difference. The lesson of the XMPP story is that the community shouldn't get complacent just because a big corp is now backing them, support their own smaller #FOSS developers through any means they can (whether financial or code), put out a unique thing every now and then, and make sure the UX is not horrible for new users. I think #Misskey, #Sharkey, and #Catodon got those lessons right (especially the very latter, UX was really horrible in XMPP back then and I think that's what "killed" it if you can even call it that). Not sure about #Mastodon though. Maybe that's what why almost all of the worry I'm hearing about #Threads comes predominantly from Mastodon and Mastodon-compatible (in the sense they try to be as compatible with Masto as possible in terms of API) instances. :seija_coffee: #fediversemeta

Big changes to the Oliphant blocklists, via @oliphant

https://oliphant.social/@oliphant/112157792053102057

Summary:

  • A revised Tier0 list (based on @Seirdy's Tier0 list, @gardenfence and the @iftas DNI list)
  • Other lists going away
  • git archives of blocklists from .social and other sites Oliphant used to use also going away

And interesting:

"You should still be able to use the Tier 0 Oliphant list and get a respectable list of blocks, though you'll notice certain more contentious entries like qoto and threads won't be on that list anymore"

Looks like at least one corner of the fedvierse is welcoming our new surveillance capitalism overlords!

On any online space, you should consider who you give power to. Who has the control over who you choose to associate with? Power doesn't corrupt. It reveals.

People in real life do choose to avoid dangerous or toxic places.

All that the instances who sign the fedipact are doing is signalling to some of us that somewhere is safe for folk who don't want to engage with Facebook at all.

This is a Freedom of Association issue, not a Freedom of Speech issue.

When I learned about the plans for #Threads to federate, I was just arriving to Fedi. So of course I had an idiotic opinion about it; Meta federation would be good for us. To say I acted as an uneducated moron would be an understatement

Ah, is that time again for unsolicited opinions about #threads and #Meta let's gooo. Spoiler alert: If you like corporate social media, you are not going to like this thread🧵

Content warning: threads, mastodon, pixelfed, gargron and dansup, and ethics; long post

It looks like you can now view anyone’s Threads profile from Mastodon and Pixelfed instances that federate with them.

If you’re a Mastodon user wanting to block Threads, or a Mastodon server admin looking not only to block Threads from federating to your server but also block all inbound and outbound traffic (data scrapers, loads of traffic overwhelming small servers) from all their IP addresses, I wrote a guide that can help:

  • Loose clothing threads (31%, 6 votes)
  • Debugging C threads (15%, 3 votes)
  • Matrix threads (15%, 3 votes)
  • Meta threads (36%, 7 votes)
19 voters. Poll end: 1 month ago

So given all of the above, does #Threads qualify as fediverse? Certainly not yet, but how about once it rolls out full "interoperability"? The honest answer is: I don't know. If they had launched using AP natively, I'd say "yes" outright—not that using AP is a requirement for federation, but embracing AP signals an embrace of federation as a structural relation. The devil is in the details, but what Meta has talked about so far sounds a lot like federating with AP-based servers, so maybe.

The free fediverses should make it easier to move between (and create) instances

Part 5 of Strategies for the Free Fediverse

https://privacy.thenexus.today/make-it-easier-to-move-to-instances-in-the-free-fediverses/

There's likely to be a lot of moving between instances as people and instances sort themselves out into the free fediverses and Meta's fediverses -- and today, moving accounts on the fediverse today. There are lots of straightforward ways to improve it, many of which don't even require improvements to the software. And there are also opportunities to make creating, customizing, and connecting instances easier.

Meta employee sharing how #Threads algo works reminds me of an old dril tweet

The free fediverses should emphasize networked communities

https://privacy.thenexus.today/the-free-fediverses-should-emphasize-networked-communities/

Here's how @lrhodes describes the Networked Communities view:

"instances are valuable for the relations and interactions they facilitate locally AND for their ability to connect you to other parts of the network."

By contrast, @evanprodromou notes that "Big Fedi" advocates typically see instances as typically see the instance as "mostly a dumb pipe." But The Networked Communities view aligns much better with the free fediverses' values – as does the "Social Archipelago" view @noracodes sketches in The Fediverse is Already Dead. Not only that, it's good strategy!

@fediversenews #fediverse #threads #fedipact

Strategies for the free fediverses

https://privacy.thenexus.today/strategies-for-the-free-fediverses/

The fediverse is evolving into different regions

- "Meta's fediverses", federating with Meta to allow communications, potentially using services from Meta such as automated moderation or ad targeting, and potentially harvesting data on Meta's behalf.

- "free fediverses" that reject Meta – and surveillance capitalism more generally

The free fediverses have a lot of advantages over Meta and Meta's fediverses, some of which will be very hard to counter, and clearly have enough critical mass that they'll be just fine.

Here's a set of strategies for the free fediverses to provide a viable alternative to surveillance capitalism. They build on the strengths of today's fediverse at its best – including natural advantages the free fediverses have that Threads and Meta's fediverses will having a very hard time countering – but also are hopefully candid about weaknesses that need to be addressed. It's a long list, so I'll be spreading out over multiple posts; this post currently goes into detail on the first two.

- Opposition to Meta and surveillance capitalism is an appealing position. Highlight it!

- Focus on consent (including consent-based federation), privacy, and safety

- Emphasize "networked communities"

- Support concentric federations of instances and communities

- Consider "transitively defederating" Meta's fediverses (as well as defederating Threads)

- Consider working with people and instances in Meta's fediverses (and Bluesky, Dreamwidth, and other social networks) whose goals and values align with the free fediverses'

- Build a sustainable ecosystem

- Prepare for Meta's (and their allies') attempts to paint the free fediverses in a bad light

- Reduce the dependency on Mastodon

- Prioritize accessibility, which is a huge opportunity

- Commit to anti-fascist, anti-racist, anti-colonial, and pro-LGBTQIA2S+ principles, policies, practices, and norms for the free fediverses

- Organize!

The free fediverses should support concentric federations of instances

Part 4 of Strategies for the Free Fediverses

https://privacy.thenexus.today/the-free-fediverses-should-support-concentric-federations-of-instances/

Here's how @zkat describes caracoles: "you essentially ask to join concentric federations of instances ... with smaller caracoles able to vote to federate with entire other caracoles."

And @ophiocephalic's "fedifams" are a similar idea: "Communities could align into fedifams based on whatever conditions of identity, philosophy or interest are relevant to them. Instances allied into fedifams could share resources and mutually support each other in many way"

The idea's a natural match for community-focused, anti-surveillance capitalism free fediverses, fits in well with the Networked Communities model discussed in part 3, and helps address scalability of consent-based federation discussed in Part 2.

"... the website loads in a special browser built into the app, rather than your phone’s default browser. In 2022, privacy researcher Felix Krause found that Meta injects special “keylogging” JavaScript onto the website you’re visiting that allows the company to monitor everything you type and tap on, including passwords. Other apps including TikTok do the same thing."

What the hell?? This is so creepy.

I was on @mike's Dot Social podcast to talk about Mastodon, #Threads (not the 1984 movie), and the social web. If you've got questions about any of those things, maybe we've covered them!

My #FediPact 2.0 website tool is now available for your anti-fascist viewing pleasure!

Please share this around so I can finallly go to sleep 😫. I know people wanted to see it.

Servers not listed just had no readily-available data for me to grab.

IMPORTANT. Threads stated policy is to collect and exploit Fediverse user personal data without explicit consent.

Now is a very good time to review Threads Terms of Use (https://help.instagram.com/769983657850450) and Supplemental Privacy Policy (https://help.instagram.com/515230437301944).

Note just by following a Threads user or replying to a post, Meta claims they are entitled to your personal data.

And what do they say they will do with your data? Provide you with "business services (including ads)."

#threads #DataPrivacy

There's a common false dichotomy about #Threads: cut them off, or leave it to user choice.

I can't speak to other software, but Mastodon offers a third option: limiting Threads. This can be done for all users of a server.

- You can follow Threads accounts after clicking through a warning.

- You have to manually approve followers _from_ Threads.

Note, however, that boosted posts will continue to appear in your home timeline:

Mais à quoi d'autre pouvait-on s'attendre ?

The recent excitement surrounding Thread's arrival on the Fediverse is concerning. To understand why this is not a good idea, consider their economic interest in harvesting data, their poor moderation, and their manipulations. Nothing good can come from their federation. Don't roll out the red carpet for them.

Am collecting Mastodon server software feature requests - specifically for moderation enhancement that might be helpful as #Threads federates in.

Looking for those that can be doable inside a month or two timeframe, and that don't need #ActivtyPub spec to change first. (Which takes time)

See what you think of this list: and add any others you think fit to me in the comments.

In the many discussions about #threads promise to add #activitypub support, regulations such as the #DMA and the #DSA, as well as the Canadian Online News Act have come up.

In this piece I dive deep into the specific articles of the Acts to see if they might impact Meta's decision making.

Oh my God. PLEASE do not get on Meta's new competitor for Twitter.

It harvests mucho data including our health data.

You cannot opt out.

#Meta has already taken info from a Facebook Messenger chat about seeking #abortion in a hostile state, and turned it over for prosecution.

If you're #trans or might ever need to end a pregnancy PLEASE do not use #Threads.

Boost this. Protect your damn friends.

Edit to add documentation: https://www.theverge.com/2022/8/10/23299502/facebook-chat-messenger-history-nebraska-teen-abortion-case

This is a warning about Meta and Threads.

Please boost this here and outside of Mastodon so that pregnant people in the United States are informed that using Meta/Threads is dangerous.

I'm unlikely to get pregnant but I have ZERO presence on Meta/Facebook/Instagram/Threads as a matter of principle.
